The Academy Is… Pay Tribute To A Movie That’s A Tribute To Something, I Think

Following up on their tribute to Donnie Darko late last year, awkwardly punctuated Idolator faves The Academy Is… continue their “sync up our emo-ish songs to footage from emo-ish movies” trend with a tribute video honoring Cameron Crowe’s love song to Led Zeppelin, Almost Famous. Some 17-year-old is going to probably going to post a similar, yet not-as-well-edited, clip to a video site eventually, so why not beat them to the punch? This time, the synced track is the song with the nearly painful to type title “After The Last Midtown Show.” Clip after the jump. MORE »

@tim_loves_cats: No, there was a tour last fall, with Hey Monday, Carolina Liar, and We The Kings. Bill & Trav's Bogus Journey, I think they called it.

@KurticusMaximus: I would, too.

The Academy Is… Finally Give In, Become A Tribute-Video Act

The Academy Is… irritate me to no end when I’m forced to add the ellipsis to their name for accuracy, but I’m willing to let it go considering how much I’ve enjoyed their album Fast Times at Barrington High this year. Still, something’s been missing. Something that would tie the occasionally angsty teen-rock lyrics of the band with the popular films that seem to inspire the band; something that would summarize one of those films to spare me the trouble of watching it again. YouTube, you always come through. MORE »

Ace Of Base: They’re Back, And They’re Buying Vowels

A reunion tour and a forthcoming greatest-hits album have seemingly revitalized the Swedish pop outfit Ace Of Base, who announced yesterday that they’re putting out a new album sometime in 2009, and reworked their early track “Wheel Of Fortune” into the brittle, yet delightful “Wheel Of Fortune 2009.” Not only is this news pretty exciting for a slow-ass Tuesday morning, it’s an excuse to post “The Sign,” which I’ve placed after the jump! Idolator’s Tribute-Video Treasury Can’t Quit You

At their best, tribute videos–like trailers–are about emotional manipulation. Through a combination of music and carefully selected clips, they twist your senses until you’re almost convinced that you actually care about ER characters or even evil sharks. Given that, it’s no surprise that there’s a bounty of Brokeback Mountain videos that employ aggressive emotional exploitation tactics. Two of these tributes stand above the rest. In a bout of tragic genius someone–with a fondness for anime–came so very close to perfection, but ultimately failed… big time. Join me after the jump for tent sex, Eiffel 65, “Landslide,” and, unfortunately, Billy Corgan. MORE »

I rode my bike to Wherehouse Music to buy Pisces Iscariot(Pumpkins b-side album that had the "Landslide" cover") the day it came out, and on the way I had about the worst bike accident possible. I flipped over, bashed my face into the concrete, had my arms all cut up, shirt was ripped to shreds. I was covered in blood basically but still made it to the store to buy the album. I think I had a concussion too, because I remember loving the hell out of that cover song.

Idolator’s Tribute-Video Treasury Has Its Night In Court With Huey Lewis

nightcourt.jpgDo you believe in: a) the sheer animal magnetism of John Larroquette in a three-piece suit, b) situation comedy, c) the power of a tribute video to make you feel complete, d) love? If you answered “all of the above,” join me after the jump. MORE »

Idolator’s Tribute Video Treasury Returns To Steal From The Rich And Give To The Poor

Robin%20Hood%20Disney.JPGOnce again, Idolator intern Kate Richardson scours the video sites, looking for the best fan-made music videos. In this installment, she tries to see if Bryan Adams or Richard Ashcroft is a more appropriate foil for Disney’s animated adapation of the classic tale Robin Hood: MORE »

I grew up loving this movie, so this was my surreal feel-good moment of the day. Thank you for not being ashamed to write about something so completely absurd. I enjoyed it, anyway.

Animoto Edits Your Crappy “Lost” Tribute Videos So You Don’t Have To

animoto.png “Welcome to the end of slideshows,” declares the subtitle on Animoto’s press kit. The site, which launched last August and just got some funding from Amazon, allows users to upload photos, choose audio from Animoto’s library or their own computer, throw these elements into a slick virtual crock pot, and come up with an automatically produced “music video” that’s more like a fancy slide show. The concept is very similar to what we know all too well as tribute videos–except there’s even less skill and artistry required, as there is no actual editing involved at all. As the resident expert in both tribute videos and stupid Internet shit, I took it upon myself to test out the service and see what it could do with some of the odds and ends in my Photobucket account and an English New Wave classic. YouTube Lets Sigur Ròs Be Weird All Over Its Front Page For 24 Hours

sheep.pngIf you’ve been on YouTube today, you may have noticed that the front page is curiously devoid of videos like “Todd’s Oscars rant” and “Monkey eats cheese.” Instead, Iceland’s second-most-famous weirdo musicians, Sigur Ròs, have taken over the site for the day, and anyone can watch their tour documentary Heima in its entirety (for free!). They’ve also selected ten fan-made videos submitted to the Minn Heima contest to be featured on the front page. Most of the videos use leftover footage from Heima, but at least one out of ten Sigur Ròs fans is going to be artsy enough to dabble in stop-motion animation. Let’s review a few of the more notable entires. MORE »

Sigur Ros is the most amazing live performance I've ever seen.

Idolator’s Tribute-Video Treasury Finds The Video To End All Videos

dom.jpgI’ve seen a lot of odd combinations on the tribute-video beat, but recently I found what I believe to be officially the Weirdest Thing on YouTube. It’s a confluence of cultural elements so incongruent, so entirely bizarre that I am not exaggerating when I say it causes me physical pain. Never has a musical soundtrack been put to such shocking ends, not even when the Phantom of the Opera paid tribute to Keiko the Orca whale. Brace yourselves: This one involves Dom DeLuise. And anime. MORE »

okay, anime nerd here to explain: the character doing most of the lipsyncing in the video (the balding guy with the beard and eye staple) is Jet, aka the Black Dog, and he's an ex-cop and righteous, fussy, father-figure-type bounty hunter (bounty hunters are called cowboys in bebop). What makes this video even more awesome is that his character would absolutely agree with the sentiments of this song. This video is so achingly perfect for the character, I swear I swooned during viewing.
Not too much prostitution going on in bebop, except for the random background ho. Though, I guess they're all whores to/for something, if you want to get all baked-ly philosophical about it. ^_^

Kelly Clarkson Fans Fight Clive Davis With Rudimentary Understanding Of Editing Software

december.jpgIn light of what they see as Clive Davis’s neglect toward the promotion of Kelly Clarkson’s My December, the Kelly Clarkson Express–a group that sounds like it should serve as a dual-purpose fan club for the first American Idol and trains–has put together a video for the song “How I Feel,” which its members think should be the next single. This is but one facet of the How I Feel Project, a campaign to get the song played on the radio, or maybe very quietly in the background of an MTV show. While strong fan support is essential when you’re a pop star being ignored by one of the world’s most powerful music bigwigs, that devotion can come with a price–and in this case, that price is a well-intentioned but sadly incompetent tribute video. The Album is not a FLOP as many are compelled to Call it.. It has gone Platium in the US as of December 07, (yes look it up if you wish on the RIAA website) Also the album world wide has sold 2 million plus. Many Artist dont hit gold, or near platinum. Yes Kelly Clarksons 3rd Album was not a commercially popular in the US but WE all know She can sing!! She has that voice of gold that many can not touch or come close to.. So Kelly will make another album, and Clive Davis will like it, love it, promote it.. You have to say that I am sure CLive and the Label are still Happy that even though they didnt back up Kelly Clarkson Album (the way the should have) the Album has done quite well.... And I love How I feel also so I hope they reconsider and make that a single, i mean come on Clive.. We all know Pinks album didnt hit smashing numbers until She released "U and Ur hand".. which was months after the album was released!!! Any who.. Kelly Clarkson ROCKS!!!

Sincerely,
Chicago's #1 Kelly Clarkson Fan
