picture_1_05An anonymous blogger is chronicling her efforts to get on American Idol–she’s trying out at the Chicago auditions, which are next week. Her blog began on May 15 and has been updated pretty regularly, with tidbits about her upcoming tryout (she needs to pick three songs, and so far she’s only settled on Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes”), her feelings about last season’s outcome (Adam lost in part because “his fans felt pretty confident that he had secured a win”), and her somewhat unsupportive parents (”Even when I told them I was auditioning for this, they just laughed”–uh, yipes). I’m still trying to figure out if this is slightly inept viral marketing by Fox or what, although I guess if she makes it–and the Idol higher-ups somehow let her keep journaling away–we’ll have our answer to that question. sad-faceRobbie Fulks’ 10-step guide to being miserable as a professional musician: “2. Imagine that your tiny corner of the world of music is the world of music…. 10. Never forget that all your failures are the doings of a conspiracy of soulless profiteers and knaves, while all of your successes were owed you.” [Robbie Fulks; HT Ned Raggett] MORE »

Jay-Z’s Movement To Kill Autotune Is Now Officially Bloggable

jaySo in response to/as a way of giggling over Jay-Z’s musical rant against AutoTune, a new blog counting off the reasons that the vocal-manipulation technique should be abolished has started. It already has eight reasons, including its opening the door for a potential robot takeover and manipulated Bible verses! It also takes on one of the people that Jay absolved because of his ability to write a melody, which I’m sure he’ll quibble with, but at least it’s funnier than Wyclef Jean’s Nick Cannon-assisted parody of the blipped-voice genre. Kanye West: More Complicated Than The Books He Isn’t Reading

paranoidYesterday, Kanye West got bummed out that the wrong version of his Rihanna-tastic “Paranoid” video leaked earlier this week: “IT HURTS ME TO SEE THE OLD AND VERY WRONG VERSION OF THE PARANOID VIDEO GET LEAKED ALL OVER THE NET WHILE I WAS ON AN 11 HR FLIGHT AND COULDN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT,” he all-capsed on his blog yesterday. The rest of his rant about the degraded state of the music video and how leaks just won’t let him be great after the jump! MORE »

anoopAmerican Idol smoothie Anoop Desai’s favorite song of right now is “Boyfriend #2,” the new single by former Pretty Ricky member Pleasure “Marcus Cooper” P. It’s a decent slice of salacious “I’m better than your man” R & B, but I really hope that the Tweet announcing this love isn’t a sign that Anoop is going to enter Pleasure’s ex-bandmate’s grinding contest. superchunkMac McCaughan can add “sports blogger” to his resume, which already includes “Merge Records founder” and “member of many awesome bands” as entries: He live-blogged last night’s Game 7 tilt between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Boston Bruins. (Boston sports fans, you’ll probably want to skip this link.) [portastatic] MORE »

capsunlockedThose of you who get a headache from Kanye West’s ALL-CAPS RAVING on his blog may enjoy Lowercase Kanye, which fixes the hyperbolic blogger’s caps-lock key, which certainly makes his rant on Twitter from earlier this week seem a lot more measured. Although now that he’s started using mixed case of his own free will, how long will it be before we need a tool that brings back his blog’s old-school, MacBook Air-breaking style? Kanye Adds Rihanna To His PR Business’ Client List

smell_like_rihanna_kanyeYesterday’s Kanye-issued denial regarding Lady GaGa’s alleged appearance on the leaked single “Silly Boy” has been followed up by the hip-hop megastar saying that Rihanna isn’t singing on the track, either. Friends, this means pop fans on the Internet have a serious problem. After all, if we can’t believe the claims of people who anonymously leak half-finished demos of future chart hits to the Internet, who can we believe? [kanYe West: Blog] MORE »

Kanye West Now Serving As Other Pop Stars’ Publicist In His Spare Time

kanye-gaga-reflex-475x332I love when celebrities use their online personae for good, namely debunking rumors that fly around gossip sites in the endless game of Internet Telephone Played By People Wearing Earplugs; Mark Hoppus denying the rumors about the new blink-182 single, Pete Wentz noting that 50 Cent wasn’t off the Fall Out Boy tour, etc. (Of course, these semi-official mouthpieces sometimes can be abused by people who want to bend the truth, but that’s why it’s always important to consider the source.) But the king of the “clarity post” is Kanye West, and apparently he’s not above outsourcing his megaphone; today he took to his MacBook Air to inform people that, contrary to popular belief, Lady GaGa was not supplying backing vocals to the recently leaked Rihanna song “Silly Boy,” which has finally started to reach the creakier corners of the Internet after debuting online last month. So, duly noted! The vocals on the song are so processed that I wasn’t even sure it was Rihanna singing, to be honest. Anyway, if you’d like to hear this vertigo-inducing slice of pop, it’s after the jump. MORE »
