Robbie Williams And Take That: Back For Good? (Or Even For Now?)

take-that-in-the-90s-17707852Well, this breathless British-tabloid report about a “reunion” between the 9/11 conspiracy-theorizing pop star and the boy band that helped vault him to fame seems to be based on all of them going out to dinner together in New York City, and Williams later being pap-spotted in the vicinity of New York’s Electric Lady Studios. Who knows whether it’ll result in any recorded material, or just more frothy speculation from across the pond—but hey, any limp excuse to post the video for the group’s 1995 single (and lone hit in America) “Back For Good” is OK by me! Who Cares About The Sugababes Split Rumors When There Might Be A New Siobhan Donaghy Record To Look Forward To?

sugababesblahSo there is a rumor that Amelle Berrabah has left pop trio the Sugababes just as they were on the cusp of breaking in the States, and that her replacement would be Jade Ewen, who sang this year’s UK entry in the Eurovision contest. So far just one British magazine is reporting it—as something that’s off-the-record and only “confirmed” via lack of denials—but there is some actual real news to come out of all this: MORE »

Oh Hey, That “Beatles Albums Arriving On iTunes” Chatter Is Starting Again

magicaliphoneAccording to the tech-news site AllThingsD, Apple has a music event scheduled for Sept. 9. ATD says that the event will involve “upgrades to the iPod line and an update to iTunes that may involve some sort of social element.” But since that date just happens to be a big one for Beatles fans—the band’s remastered catalog is coming out, as well as The Beatles: Rock Band—other news outlets are wondering if this will be the day that the Fab Four’s catalog finally comes to iTunes, after years and years of speculation on the part of the music press. And if it doesn’t happen? Well, music-tech reporters will probably be thanking their lucky stars that the dusty story about the band’s digital upgrade can have life breathed into it at least one more time. I Don’t Know If Brandy Was Dropped By Her Label Or Not, But I Do Know That Her Song “Decisions” Is Quite The Jam

brandy-promo2Last night, word spread around the Internet that R & B singer Brandy had been dropped by both her management company (Roc Nation) and her label (Epic Records), although her rep said to one of the outlets reporting the story that Brandy was actually trying to get out of said deals and not the other way around. The singer herself took to Twitter decrying “so called journalist[s]” who “spread false rumors without the facts.” So while people are wondering what label will release her next album (because major-label affiliations clearly matter these days), can we take a second to appreciate her new-ish track “Decisions,” which is apparently from the sessions for her next album? “Decisions” is a keyboard-spangled duet with Ne-Yo that’s set up as a conversation between two about-to-stray people and the angels and devils positioned on their respective shoulders, and it’s one of the better R & B tracks I’ve heard in a year stuffed full of very good ones. Wikipedia Sparks A Pretty Odd Rumor About Panic At The Disco And Michael Jackson’s Guitarist

panicJust in case you were wondering: Orianthi Panagaris, the Australian guitarist/singer who was a member of Michael Jackson’s backing band for his ill-fated run of shows at London’s O2 Arena, will not be replacing recently departed Panic At The Disco guitarist Ryan Ross, despite claims that apparently started on Wikipedia yesterday. Michael Jackson’s Funeral May Inspire Even More Circus-Related References Than You Would Expect

michael-jackson-thrillerRecently relocated gossip Roger Friedman is reporting that AEG Live–the concert-promotion company that was going to put on Michael Jackson’s 50-show run at London’s O2 Arena–is planning to throw a funeral for Jackson this Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, a facility it also happens to own. How convenient! Except it’s not all that convenient for the people producing the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which is supposed to begin a mini-residency at the Staples Center the next day. MORE »

Why On Earth Would Anyone Think That A Dude In Shinedown Would Be An “Inside Source” Regarding A Soundgarden Reunion?

soundgardenAs savvy consumers of media, we all know that the Internet news world can have a lot of game-of-Telephone tendencies, thanks to the speed at which information can travel and the clicking hordes’ seemingly endless appetite for tidbits of information, no matter how watered-down or thinly sourced. But really, everyone, when the lead singer of Shinedown–you know, that band that has a death grip on radio’s rock charts these days, despite (or maybe thanks to) their aggressive anonymity?–starts spouting off about knowing that there’s a Soundgarden reunion in the works because of talk with “someone specifically in their organization,” you may want to check it out. Sure, there’s evidence that there might be movement on at least 75% of that front, but my first thought when I read Brent Smith’s bit of speculation was “Oh, he’s probably trying to link his band to ‘Outshined’ in peoples’ minds. Kind of weird, but I guess it’ll keep dude’s name in the limelight.” Luckily, one Daily Swarm reader allegedly has Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd on speed dial, and a text basically asking, “WTF?” was sent his way. And Shepherd answered! The text message that might prove everything, or might just attest to the power of Photoshop, after the jump. MORE »

Did Petulant Radio Programmers Take Off U2’s “Boots” After Bono Spoke Up About Royalties?

GOYB_cover_packshotAn AP article this morning on a filing that the musicFIRST Coalition made with the FCC starts off with a tantalizingly blind item-y lede: “Which top-selling artist purportedly had his new single yanked from some radio stations playlists in retaliation for supporting royalties for musicians?” Ooh, who could it be? Well, given the roster of artists who publicly came out in support of radio stations paying out royalties to performers whose music got airplay–which would cost radio stations a huge chunk of change, there’s really only one answer! So What Is Jay-Z Up To, Anyway?

jayyyyLast week, it came to light that Jay-Z had bought the rights to his long-in-the-works album The Blueprint 3 back from Def Jam, the label where he served as president from 2004-2007. The album was his final commitment to his Def Jam contract, and he’s now free to put it out on his Live Nation-backed imprint Roc Nation. In the past 24 hours, two stories regarding the fate of both Blueprint 3 and Jay’s newly minted label have emerged, with one saying that Jay is going to partner with Epic Records and another claiming that he’s going to enter the warm embrace of Warner Music Group. Which tale sounds more believable? An armchair analysis after the jump. MORE »

Can Jay-Z Break The Sugababes In The States?

Rumor has it that Jay-Z has signed the Sugababes to an American record deal, some five years after their track “Hole In The Head” became their lone single to break this country’s Hot 100. While I’m all for better girl groups making inroads into the Scherzinger/O’Day-strangled market, let’s just hope that bringing the ‘Babes to the States’ ever-diminishing pop consciousness doesn’t result in the girls being relegated to “featured” status on a bunch of other peoples’ tracks–or winding up in a situation similar to the one that ensuedthe last time Jay plucked a hopeful from across the pond.
