Four Artists Who Might Want To Branch Out Into Infomercial-Inspired Licensing

product-detail-topspin-snuggieNever one to let a good joke just settle, Weezer is packaging the deluxe editions of its new album Raditude with a Snuggie, the As Seen On TV “blanket with sleeves” that’s both functional (it really is pretty warm) and hilarity-inducing (ah, recession-era cable ads, the last bastion of UHF-style production values). Surely the amount of press that Weezer has received for this move will result in other artists borrowing from the ever-expanding world of cheap commercials. After the jump, we envision a few pairings. MORE »

Lego Freddie Mercury Invites You To Play The Game

queenx-largeThe seemingly pantsless (?!) version of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury that was unveiled for the forthcoming Lego Rock Band launch is cute, albeit a bit NSFW-seeming given that they didn’t paint his trousers white. (Guess everyone has to work blue these days.) Side note: I do hope that you can unlock a module that will take him into “I Want To Break Free” mode! [USA Today / Earlier] MORE »

Jon Bon Jovi Finally Gets Respect As An Artist

57722536Clearly hoping that the power of one conglomerate-owned network will at least equal that of Oprah Winfrey, Jon Bon Jovi has signed an exclusive deal with NBC and its sister networks like Bravo to promote his band’s upcoming album, The Circle, which comes out on Nov. 10. And this frothy cross-promotion even has a lofty title! NBC Universal—which you may know as the television company that decided to decimate the scripted-television industry by thrusting Jay Leno into five days of prime time a week—has declared the wide-grinning singer its artist in residence. Take that, music critics who have long dismissed Bon Jovi and his namesake band’s big hooks and anthemic choruses! Dude is an artist—even James Lipton says so! MORE »

MTV Host Gives MTV News “Exclusive” Scoop On Her Actions At MTV Video Music Awards

lilmamaMeanwhile, the post-Video Music Awards mea culpas continued with pint-sized MC Lil Mama’s statement on her joining Jay-Z and Alicia Keys onstage at the end of Sunday night’s show, which honestly might have been more notable for how many people said “really? huh, I missed that” in its aftermath than for anything that actually happened. “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” she said in a statement released to MTV. (Who, by the way, employ her as host of their dance-off show America’s Best Dance Crew.) “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.” Somehow, she didn’t manage to mention that her latest song—which leaked, OMG, yesterday!—is out. And funnily enough for someone who tried to engage in a little spotlight-stealing, it’s called “See Me Everywhere”! I mean, what are the odds? MORE »

Will The Ability To Embody Adam Levine Cause People To Re-Embrace Music Games?

band-hero-adam-levine_lThe music-game genre may be suffering from slow sales to the point that Guitar Hero maker Activision is putting out a “buy one get one free” offer to anyone interested in purchasing either of the series’ next two games—but that hasn’t stopped the company from going full-speed ahead with the imaginatively titled Band Hero. The difference between the two heroes? MORE »

Michael Jackson Movie To Touch Down In Theaters Just In Time For Halloween

jackso-rehearsal-1-500x317How many commemorative costumes will people be able to wear to the screenings of the film version of Michael Jackson’s aborted This Is It concert series, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Oct. 30? I can already count about 15 from the “Thriller” video alone. The flick will be edited from some 80 hours of rehearsal footage that were assembled in the weeks leading up to Jackson’s passing on June 25, with High School Musical franchise director Kenny Ortega—who worked with Jackson on dance moves for the show—assembling the filmed material into a finished product. “The Addams Family” Musical Is Not Going To Get In The Addams Groove

In yet another sign that everyone everywhere is pretty much out of ideas for good, a musical based on The Addams Family is coming to Broadway next year, with Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane in the head-of-household roles: “In this original story, the famously macabre Addams Family is put to the test when outsiders come to dinner, hurling Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, Grandmama and Lurch headlong into a night that will change the family forever.” Ooh, forever. However! The show’s music is credited to a bunch of people who are definitely not MC Hammer, thus robbing Times Square’s tourist masses of the chance to see “Addams Groove” in full-on production number form. What a shame! I hope this is just because there’s an MC Hammer jukebox musical in the works. [Playbill / YouTube] MORE »

Taco Bell’s Mood Music Plays It Cheap

tacobell“Nannerpuss,” “Gimme Dat Fish,” “Do You Wanna Get Frosty With Me,” “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell”—how many of this year’s more memorable songs have been at the very least inspired by the grease merchants that line this nation’s roadways and service plazas? Apparently enough to get the creative minds at Taco Bell’s ad agency thinking that the Mexic-ish chain deserved a song of its own, and that said song really needed to go viral, albeit not in the “upset stomach” way. After the jump, feast your ears on “It’s All About The Roosevelts,” an ode to the Bell’s low prices that has made those who hear it wonder en masse if the chain had hired Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island to do its jingle-based bidding: MORE »

Colbie Caillat To Invade Riverdale

veronicacoverIn one of those “huh, how did this come about” pairings, folkie-ish singer Colbie Caillat will be comic-book-ized for an upcoming issue of the Archie offshoot Veronica; she’ll play a potential romantic interest for the red-headed Riverdale resident who’s somehow a “hunk.” (Ah, youth.) Archie Andrews falling for someone who’s frequently referred to as “a MySpace star”? That’s quite the leap for someone who was horrified by the world of downloading just two years ago! MORE »

Beyoncé’s Sasha Fierce Clothing Line: Will You Like It Enough To Put A Romper On It?

knowleses_dereon021Beyoncé and her mother Tina Knowles have announced a new subset of the family’s House of Deréon clothing line: Sasha Fierce for Deréon, which will take B’s alter ego’s penchant for over-the-top accessorizing and bring it to the junior departments of Macy’s. The clothes–an example is at left–are mostly going to be black, so as to make the accessorizing pop: MORE »
