The Korean girl-group Girls’ Generation brings together 8-bit games, delicious noodle soup, and flouncy skirts in the above commercial for a Korean ramen brand, whose ad agency had the genius idea to use the music from the addictive video game Bubble Bobble as its bed. I have listened to this commercial multiple times since it first crossed my transom, and it’s making me think about how I think someone should just put out a CD of the Wii’s weather music, which is some of the best music to doze by ever. The Raincoats Documentary Is Probably Going To Be Great
One of my favorite post-punk acts is the chaotic, beautiful British act The Raincoats, whose unison singing and eye-opening violin parts came together to create some music that, not to hyperbolize, really changed the way I listened to and appreciated music. (In case you’re unfamiliar, “Fairytale In The Supermarket” is above; the harmonic-heavy “In Love” is absolutely stunning; and they also threw down a gender-bending cover of the Kinks’ already pretty malleable “Lola”.) Anyway, Raincoats member Gina Birch has been working on a documentary about the band’s history, and I’m looking forward to it a lot—not only does it seem like it’ll have performance footage from the Raincoats’ earliest days, I’m curious to see documentary footage of their Kurt Cobain-sparked resurgence / reunion in the ’90s. Kelly Clarkson Goes To Melissa Etheridge’s Window
Also at last night’s Vh1 Divas extravaganza: Kelly Clarkson, who was paired with fellow belter Melissa Etheridge on a ripping performance of Etheridge’s 1988 debut single “Bring Me Some Water.” The two complement each other quite nicely as they trade off vocals, and man, I could just listen to Kelly sing all day. But you already know this. Clip after the jump. MORE »

Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein bought the new novel by the wonderful writer Lorrie Moore, A Gate At The Stairs, and found a surprise inside that had nothing to do with its twisty plot: Her former band Sleater-Kinney was name-checked on page 27. (I devoured the book over the course of this weekend—Moore has been one of my favorite writers for years, and this book was long in the making—and since it just came out I don’t want to give away any spoilers. But if you’ve read it and want to discuss you should e-mail me!) [Monitor Mix] MORE »

Paramore Get Kings Of Leon Where They Want Them
Continuing the theme of Pretty Good Covers You Might Have Missed While Keeping Away From Your Computer This Weekend, Paramore visited Radio One’s Live Lounge on Friday and performed an unplugged version of Kings Of Leon’s slow-building Top Five hit “Use Somebody.” Lead singer Hayley Williams’ voice is what makes the cover; it’s rich with longing and makes me wonder just what tricks the band will pull out on the can’t-get-here-soon-enough brand new eyes. This sped-up reworking of Van Halen’s AOR staple “I’ll Wait” was dubbed “I’ll Wait (Devo Speed)” by a commenter ’round these parts, and it sounded so herky-jerky and good to these ears, I just had to pay tribute via Photoshop. (The Misfits-y hijacking of Danzig’s “Mother” linked from the message-board thread responsible for these shenanigans is worth your time, too.) [Boxstr via ILX; HT Jess/Paul] MORE »

Roxanne Shanté Knows That Living Smart Is The Best Revenge
Roxanne Shanté is very, very, very smart, and I’m not just saying that because of her advanced degrees. The MC—who burst on the scene in 1984 with “Roxanne’s Revenge,” an answer song to the UTFO classic “Roxanne, Roxanne”, which in turn sparked its own flurry of answer records—used her street smarts to help polish her academic bona fides; after a thorough read of her record contract with Warner Music Group, which she signed long ago, she realized that there had been a clause in there where WMG said that it would foot the bill for any and all educational pursuits she decided to embark upon. Jarvis Cocker Invades Your Home Screen
Pitchfork has posted the entirety of Jarvis Cocker’s set from last year’s Pitchfork Music Festival, and if you have an hour or so to carve out from today I suggest you spend it watching this; it includes early versions of tracks that made their way to Further Complications and his ferocious cover of Master C & J’s Chicago house classic “Face It.” Above, my favorite part of the show: Jarvis showing off his knowledge of the festival’s home city of Chicago by reminding the crowd of just who Wikipedia thinks the city’s most famous natives are. (There’s even a throwaway Karate Kid Part II reference!) [Pitchfork] MORE »
