If you're an American who's not yet up on Simon Cowell's mega-successful British series The X Factor, you will be soon—it's reportedly set to be launched here in the States sometime after American Idol's ninth season.

Eighteen-year-old Joe McElderry was crowned the winner of X Factor's sixth season last night. But unlike last year's winner Alexandra Burke, we're probably not going to see him in a half-jersey, slinking around in a football locker room anytime soon.

McElderry's first single, a cover of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," was made available digitally yesterday, and it's already the top download at the U.K. iTunes store. More »

Here’s Joe—who was mentored this season by X Factor judge/Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole—being announced the winner:

McElderry is expected to nab the celebrated Christmas #1 single on the U.K. chart next week, as the X Factor winners have done in recent years past.

Let’s hope that’s at least some consolation for “The Climb” songwriter Jessi Alexander, who told Entertainment Weekly she hit “a new low” when the tune was withdrawn from the Grammys after initially receiving a nomination in the Best Song Written For A Motion Picture category (for Hannah Montana: The Movie).

“The Climb” had its Grammy nod yanked away after Disney disclosed that it hadn’t initially been written for the film.

Says Alexander:

“The story is, originally, me and Jon Mabe sat down as songwriters, like we do every day, and I had this melody that came to me on the way to work that morning. I knew that it was special. I knew it was pop. And I knew it was Disney. We started a song. It was actually called “It’s the Climb,” and it was a more spiritual song, sung in third person. And it was really about my woes, and Jon’s woes in the music business. But when I write songs, being at Disney, I turn them in and of course think they all should be submitted to film and television. That was one of the reasons I signed at Disney, was to hopefully get placements at film and television. So before filming, Peter Chelsom, the director of Hannah Montana: The Movie, actually came to Nashville and heard my music, and wanted me to submit songs for the movie. I put the song “It’s the Climb” on a CD, and he called back within weeks and said the song was gonna be an integral part of the movie, and the only thing he needed was for me to change what I would consider to be a substantial amount of the song. And that’s where the gray area is. For me, when you change something from third person to first person, it can change the whole meaning of a line.”

Ah, well. The Brits will be celebrating the song for awhile, at least. Maybe the BAFTA rules aren’t so strict?

Well, it's about time. William McKinley High's show choir New Directions is finally off to belt it out against the competition in tonight's aptly-titled Glee episode "Sectionals." Of course, any euphoric buzz fans of the show will get from watching the series' key plot points wrapping up—and yes, there will be some major wrapping up (read on!)—will be tainted by the fact that Glee is going on hiatus until April 2010.

So what are viewers in for tonight? More »

William McKinley High’s show choir New Directions is finally off to belt it out against the competition in tonight’s aptly-titled Glee episode “Sectionals.” Of course, any euphoric buzz fans of the show will get from watching the series’ key plot points wrapping up—and yes, there will be some major wrapping up (read on!)—will be tainted by the fact that Glee is going on hiatus until April 2010.

So what are viewers in for tonight?

E! Online recently asked Cory Monteith if his character Finn finds out that Quinn is pregnant with Puck’s baby in the finale. The actor replied, “Yes, he does.”

Phew. Check that off as frustrating secret #2 finally out in the open, after Mr. Schu’s discovery last week that wife Terri’s supposed baby bump was nothing more than a bit of trickery and extra padding.

“The plotlines you may have felt need resolution will be resolved,” Monteith also allowed. “There is a lot of resolution in ‘Sectionals’.”

Here’s hoping Artie and Tina finally get to smooching, then. And that Emma snaps out of it and decides to call off her marriage with Coach Tanaka.

Another source tells E! “there are two show-stopping solos that will make the devil run home and call his mama.” Hmmm. “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “My Life Would Suck Without You” are all cued up for tonight. They’re also the last four songs that appear on the just-released Glee—The Music, Vol. 2 soundtrack (which is currently #1 on iTunes).

And for those in deep anguish over the impending four-month absence of the FOX musical comedy program, at least the Glee Season One, Vol. One: Road To Sectionals DVD will be there to ease the pain; it hits shelves on December 29.

And here’s something we might be able to look forward to when the show returns next spring: Idina Menzel is in talks to follow in the diva-like footsteps of her onetime Wicked co-star Kristen Chenoweth by appearing the hit series.

Vevo, which is partly owned by music giants Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, hopes become the music video viewing destination online—the MTV for the iTunes generation, if you will.
Vevo is said to already have over 14,000 vids up now provided by the various major labels. Of course, each time we’ve tried to log on this morning, we keep getting a server error warning. They all landed high up on iTunes' Rewind 2009 list of top-selling songs and albums.

Surprisingly, the Peas, who had two of the top downloaded songs of the year, only ranked at #10 with their album The E.N.D. Guess there really is a threshold when it comes to a full hour of Fergie.

Check out what ended up being the most downloaded music of the year at the digital retailer, and what was singled out by iTunes editors—including the not-so-surprising (Artist Of The Year: Micheal Jackson) and mildly-surprising (Best Soundtrack: (500) Days Of Summer)—after the jump. More »

It's been one hell of a year for Ryan Tedder. In addition to his band OneRepublic releasing sophomore album Waking Up last month, the singer-songwriter is also reveling in the fact that "Halo," which he co-wrote with Beyonce (as well as co-produced), has been nominated for a Record Of The Year Grammy. Additionally, Beyonce's full LP containing "Halo," I Am... Sasha Fierce, is also up for Album Of The Year.

But with "Halo" came controversy after Kelly Clarkson basically accused him of using the same melody for her own Ryan Tedder song, "Already Gone." And then in the fall, while tackling a break-neck pace of work that saw him crafting music with everyone from Adam Lambert and Natasha Bedingfield to Adele and Leona Lewis, Tedder says he came down with H1N1: "It nearly killed me. I was sick for three weeks."

But, hey, why not add more work to the schedule—Tedder also says he's been asked to contribute material to a forthcoming episode of Glee that's set to contain original music for a change.

RD: First off, congratulations on the Grammy nomination for “Halo.”
RT: Thank you. I was definitely not counting on it, because the Grammys are notorious for disappointing, but it was exciting. What I didn’t count on was [that Beyonce] also got nominated for Album Of The Year, so I could end up potentially walking away with two that night. If that happened I would probably freak out, or put at least one of them up on eBay.

Did you watch the episode of Glee where the cast sings “Halo” as a mashup with “Walking On Sunshine”?
I did! Glee is actually my new addiction. I download every episode. They actually just approached me. Adam Anders, the guy who does all the music, approached me about two weeks ago to do original music for the next season. So I’m gonna be doing at least one song for the next season that’s original.

OneRepublic has had songs in two movies by German filmmaker Til Schweiger, Keinohrhasen and the one currently out now, Zweiohrküken. What’s the history there?
Til literally is probably our most vehement fan. He got an early pre-release copy of our first album before it came out and picked “Apologize.” He didn’t think we were going to approve it for the movie originally. German budgets are not the same as an American movie. A guy that works at our label is from Germany and he knew how big of a deal Til Schweiger is. In Germany, Til Schweiger is like Mel Gibson plus Brad Pitt. He produces, directs, writes and stars in the biggest movies in Germany. None of us had any concept of any of that. It really took another German telling us, ‘You really need to take this seriously,’ and [to] do whatever needs to be done with Til Schweiger.

How did the OneRepublic song “Marchin’ On” get selected to be on Timbaland’s Shock Value II—albeit on the “deluxe” edition?
That’s really interesting. It was actually not finished. “Marchin’ On” was the last song that made the album, and it came about as an accident. I didn’t know that the album was even being made, and then all of a sudden I find out it’s being made and it’s gotta be finished in three weeks and Timbaland needs a song from you. So we did a song that we really liked that we were considering saving for our next record, and Tim heard it and he liked it but he thought it was too happy. He wanted something a little bit more somber. I just kind of kept beating my head against the wall, and tried four or five different ideas for songs. A few of them were great. I tend to not finish songs if I don’t think that they’re gonna be great. So I had four unfinished song ideas, and on the fifth one I just decided to do something really, really simple. I came up with a verse and chorus to “Marchin’ On,” I think I was in Minneapolis in some studio, and then sent it to Tim and he freaked out on it. He [had] asked me for a “Halo.” He was making all these references. I was like, I’m not gonna do that. I’m not gonna hand in something that sounds like “Apologize, Part II.” I don’t really believe in trying to rip yourself off.

Why go back there, anyway?
Yeah, it’s not worth going back. That territory, for better or worse, was conquered. So, nevertheless, I wanted to give him something that had tempo, that was four-on-the-floor, that could almost be a dance song. The funny part is it was only supposed to be on his album. Our album was done. We had ten songs. Originally our album was only gonna be nine songs, and the album title for the longest time was 9. We even had artwork and everything, but we had to scrap that because two different movies and a book and all this crap was coming out called 9. So we literally added a tenth song.

You said “Marchin’ On” wasn’t finished?
What happened was there was a miscommunication and the label thought we were putting “Marchin’ On” on our album as well as Timbaland’s album. And so they printed every single album sleeve with “Marchin’ On.” But the problem was, with the Timbaland version I only did half of a song. I did a verse and a chorus. So I find out literally the evening before the whole album was being mastered, it’s being mastered in 12 hours—and I’d just finished a show—and my manager says, “You’ve got to gotta go into a studio tonight and finish ‘Marchin’ On.’” I was like, hell no! It’s not supposed to be finished. Timbaland finished it. He was like, “No, we need a OneRepublic version now, because wires got crossed and everything’s been printed with ‘Marchin’ On.’” So that’s how that song ended up on the album. That song went from a verse-chorus to a full song literally in an hour and 45 minutes.

It’s got to be wearing on you at this point, trying to balance the songwriting for other artists as well as your own career with OneRepublic.
It really is, man. It really is. And that’s kinda the thing I’m trying to figure out. I was just talking to Max Martin the other day—he was an idol of mine, and so now he and I have developed a friendly relationship. The single greatest email I ever got in my life was Max Martin emailed me about a year-and-a-half ago and said, “There are only two songs ever written that I’ve told anybody I wish I’d written.” And he said, “You wrote both of them.” I saved the email! I was like, are you kidding me? I wrote back and said, “You have about five.” He just emailed me yesterday, actually, and was like, “I don’t know how you do it,” because I was just venting to him, saying things are busy, it’s crazy. And I’m the kind of person that, in anything I’m doing—if it’s exercise, if it’s running, if it’s sports, whatever it is—I tend to see how far I can push myself. It’s almost like self-torture. I wanna know what my threshold is. And so this past fall was probably the most intense—we were rehearsing, shooting a video, I was wrapping Adam Lambert’s album, handing in mixes for Leona [Lewis] and writing with Natasha [Bedingfield] while finishing our record, all simultaneously.

Were you trying to set some kind of record?
It nearly killed me. I got H1N1. I was sick for three weeks. I was like, okay, that’s my threshold. So now I’ve kind of backed off it a little bit. I have the uber-drive like the Energizer bunny that just makes me just go, go, go. And I wanna do it all. But the problem is, I’m realizing, in trying to do that you can just kill yourself. And it’s like once you reach whatever that level is, the thought of maintaining it is just nauseating. It’s like trying to pull a Madonna or something. I like Lady Gaga, but when I think about her life I literally have to go take a nap. Thinking about her life makes me tired, because I’m thinking, you really should have taken about eight years to get to where you are. I can say this because I’ve done it—not on her level, but I’ve been doing this for a long time. When you start at that velocity—I mean, that’s what happened to Panic! At the Disco, and now, I don’t know if they’re done, but pretty much. When you start at that maximum velocity, crazy level, maintaining it is ten times worse than getting there.

How do you give the brush-off to other artists wanting a Ryan Tedder track on their album?
Now I just balance it out. I’m only working on stuff that I absolutely love now. I get hit up for songs every day, probably four or five times a day. And they’re all huge artists, so it’s really hard to pass on a lot of them. But now I say if inspiration hits me and something absolutely magnificent raises its head, then I’ll do something. But what I’m not gonna do is hand in a B+ song just for the sake of handing one in.

So who’s getting your “A” material these days?
I’m working with Adele right now, who’s inspiring me like crazy. I hadn’t written a song in about a month, literally, until yesterday. The less I write, the better the songs are. When “Halo” came about, I hadn’t written a song in two months. Then two months after that I wrote “Battlefield,” and two months after that was “Already Gone.” When I don’t do a ton of writing, then typically the quality of the song is a lot better.

You’re very tight with Simon Cowell and you work with all the artists coming out of American Idol. Were you asked to be a replacement judge when Paula left at any point?
[Laughs] You know, yeah, as like a joke in a passing conversation with Simon. I was like, “So Paula’s leaving?” He was like, “Yeah, you wanna replace her?” I was like, “Uh, no.” I’ve known Randy Jackson for years. I actually know Paula pretty well. My wife’s best friend was her roommate and personal assistant for the last few years. It’s a really small world in Hollywood, which is partly why I left. But I can’t say that at some point I won’t do something like that, because I love every aspect of music and I love evaluating music. I love listening and just taking stuff apart—not necessarily critically, but from a songwriter-artist perspective. Those shows are amazing. What I like about those shows, X Factor and American Idol, it’s gotten the whole country obsessed with music. That makes me happy. I always loved Star Search. I never understood why that show got taken off the air. I think once X Factor starts [here in the U.S.], Simon’s going to—he’s extremely competitive—and I think he’s going to attempt an overthrow of the American Idol paradigm. He’s gonna shift it to X Factor. I’m pretty sure that’s gonna happen.

One of the best albums you had a hand in was Blake Lewis’ first one, Audio Day Dream. It had to be disappointing that it didn’t take off like it should have.
I loved that album. I was actually with Blake about a week-and-a-half ago. He pops up random places. We were in Vegas and Seattle, and somehow he always just manages to pop up. He’s still bummed about it and confused about it. He’s moving forward and doing his own thing, as he should. But something weird happened on that project, and I can’t really go on the record saying exactly what it is. I have my suspicions. I feel like the label was in a transitional period when that album came out. They were switching heads of state, more or less, and that was one of those albums that had singles, I think, for days. I know it did. I know for a fact, because they researched the crap out of that album, and there were five songs that tested Top 10—which is astronomical, as far as research goes. His album was maybe a little too eclectic. And frankly, when the first single didn’t just explode, they shifted their attention to Jordin and thought, well, let’s work Jordin’s record. And that’s really what happened.

The year’s almost over. Have you made amends with Kelly Clarkson after the whole “Halo”/”Already Gone” drama?
Man, I haven’t talked to her, to be honest, since that went down. She has my email. Her attorney or somebody from her camp told somebody from my camp that she’s willing to work with me again. I was like, oh, thank you. I mean, I’m looking at your song right now and it’s #1 for the fourth week on Hot AC, so I’m sorry that I helped with that. I was absolutely livid when that whole thing came out because she had no idea what she was talking about when she said that. Somebody got up in her ear, and she got a bug in her ear. It was how she said it and how she worded it. If I was going around and selling the same track to the biggest artists in the world, how long would my career last? It’s ludicrous. And she knows me well enough to know I’m not an idiot. I’m not the kinda guy who’s gonna bust my ass for ten years to try and pull a fast one on Beyonce or Kelly. I’m no longer mad about the situation at all. “Already Gone” has just about done as well in America as “Halo” did. She literally wanted to sabotage the song. I’m happy that it saw the light of day, because I actually liked “Already Gone” more than “Halo.” I connect with it more. It gave me goose bumps. I’ve watched girls I’ve played the song for cry. It’s just an emotional, heartbreaking breakup song. I always liked it more than “Halo.”

Would you consider working with her again, then?
As far as working with her in the future, I would—but I don’t know, man. It really is tough to say. I like Kelly a lot. I have nothing but amazing stuff to say about her. Her album just got nominated for Pop Album Of The Year, and I like to think I contributed somewhat with that. She’s the easiest person to work with in the studio, and all these other great superlatives. But having said that, it’s like, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. And I just don’t know that I wanna venture—I don’t wanna get some crazy-ass backlash or get my head snapped off for writing a hit song. I do wish her the best, and if we work together in the future, then I will be a happy camper about it and let bygones be bygones.

“The Pussycat Dolls have been on a hiatus for a while now. I really don’t know what’s to come, I can’t even comment on it because I’m not the driving force behind it,” Wyatt tells Digital Spy.

Kimberly continues: “Robin Antin is the creator and there’s a lot of chefs in the kitchen when it comes to the Pussycat Dolls. They’re making their choices wisely… No matter what happens, I’ll always be involved with the Pussycat Dolls even if it’s helping with choreography or creative direction.”

Spoken like a cat who wants to ensure she maintains all nine lives.
In light of this latest news, let’s have a fond look back at PCD’s happier days of winter 2005—when they were still a scantily-clad six-piece singing the now-ironically-titled “Stickwitu”:

Gaga performed last night in Blackpool, England, at the Royal Variety Performance. During the evening, Gaga performed "Speechless" while playing a piano ten feet off the floor of the stage. Other artists at the gig included Michael Buble, Miley Cyrus, Mika and 2008 X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

Our pre-performance chit-chats with the artists after the jump:

Ting Tings (Nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards; recently signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label.)

I heard you guys got a little too excited about your Grammy nomination.
Jules De Martino: We got the news at about four in the morning when we were at our studio in Berlin, recording our album. And we were with a few friends, obviously when we got the news we started drinkin’… I think it was a 5 or 6 am departure, and we didn’t really have our heads together at the time, we got to the airport and we didn’t have our passports and we missed the flight. So we had to leave a day later. So you can imagine getting all the good news from the States, our label, our management, and then having to write back and say we just missed out flight.
Katie White: Which was amazing, when you’re supposed to be on a plane for 11 hours and you’re stuck there in bed, it’s a really great feeling.
Jay-Z didn’t lend out his private plane for you?
Katie: I think we’ve caused enough trouble by that point!
What made you decide to sign with Jay-Z and Roc Nation?
Jules: We’re big fans of his music, he’s one of the stand alone artists in the world, whose not only a good rapper but a good writer, he runs his own thing, he does it himself. And we produce our own music so we look up to him for inspiration.
How much influence will Jay have on your upcoming album? Will he be making a cameo?
Katie: It’s early days, we’re still settling in. We tend to knock ourselves away a bit when we’re writing ands recording so we’ve haven’t been socially hoppy, we just kind of sit in bed, and we’ll probably work out what we’re gonna do.

Jason Derulo (Hit number one with “Whatcha Say;” will be opening for Lady Gaga on the Fame Monster Tour.)

Were you a big fan of Imogen Heap? Is that what led to her song “Hide and Seek” being sampled on “Whatcha Say”?
Yes! I’m the kind of person that would go into a record store and just pick up any random CD just to educate myself. I went into the record store and picked up this CD, there was this… [searches for the word] eclectic-looking lady on there, so I really wanted to know about it. I heard the song “Hide and Seek” and fell in love with it and I showed it to [album producer] J.R. [Rotem] who loved the song, who knew about it from before. That happened around the same time my brother came to me with this concept. He cheated on his girlfriend, and he was begging for his love back. And in the sample, she was saying “Mmm, what you say, you meant well, of course you did,” so she’s being sarcastic. It was a perfect marriage to make a magical song.
What can we expect on your upcoming album?
I went into the studio and made this album with J.R., and for eight months we grinded, grinded, grinded, wrote and recorded three hundred songs. The album consists of totally different tracks. I tried to reinvent myself on each track because I’m a music lover. I’ve been a student of music my entire life. I’ve studied classical music, jazz music, you name it.
You can sing classical?
Yes! [Sings] Aaaava mariaaaa… I love rock, I love country, I love Eurodance—it’s a music lovers album. I think it’s the first album that pulls from so many genres.
Classical, too? I know you can sing it, you just did!
Not so much. My voice is deep rooted in classical music so that influence will always be there. Well, ya know, maybe! I’m still recording a few songs, so maybe.
Are you excited opening for Lady Gaga?
Of course! She’s incredible. Her show is so theatrical and it’s truly amazing. I studied musical theatre my entire life, so I’m very visual myself, I just love to watch her show. She’s forcing me to step my game up. It’s easy to get lost performing beside such a groundbreaking artist. I’m glad I’m on this tour.
Are you gonna step up your game on your on-stage costumes to compete with Gaga in that arena?
Eh, I might borrow a few of her outfits.

Orianthi (Guitarist in Michael Jackson: This Is It; her debut album, Believe, is out now.)

What was it like meeting Michael Jackson for the first time at your audition for the tour?
I was so nervous. I came in and played “Beat It”, “Wanna Be Starting Something” and “Diarty Diana”. And he sat there starting right at me, it was really intense. I was praying to god I got it right and he would hire me. It was incredible working with him, I learned so much. [I was] such a big fan of his going into it, and such a bigger fan coming out of it.
Would you two jam together during rehearsals?
We would jam out as a band and when he came in we would just want to run the sets and run everything so we were spot on. But he liked to have fun, he was a big kid, joking around a lot. I think people can see that side of him in [This Is It]. He’s funny and had a great heart, and wanted everyone to shine and have their own moments.
Do you ever feel unfairly judged for being an attractive female who plays guitar?
I’ve been playing for eighteen years. Since I was 6, I’m 24 now. I love it as much as the guys, so hopefully they see I’m serious about it. If you love something and you’re passionate about it, you keep at it. I wasn’t that popular in school because of it, lining up in the same auditions as the guys, it was pretty weird. It was a guy’s thing, but it’s sorta like being a male ballerina.
You’ve already played with one of, if not the biggest music superstar of all time. What’s one of your other goals in the music industry?
I’m gonna get more kids to play guitar. Especially girls, and if they’re playing guitar, to keep at it.

Jay Sean (Has released three studio albums in the UK, but is finally being promoted here in the States; hit number one with “Down” feat. Lil Wayne.)

Is it weird being launched here as a new artist although you’ve already made a name for yourself in Britain?
I think that was the nicest thing, even though I’ve been going seven years, for me it was a case of “Alright, you know what, you’re going to America, don’t expect anyone to know you, don’t expect anyone to care. It’s brand new for you, so none of the ego stuff.” This is a new land for me to make a name for myself, and I enjoy that challenge.
You’ve already landed on Lil Wayne’s seemingly endless list of collaborators, and now you’ve teamed up with Sean Paul for “Do You Remember”. How did that track get started?
I met Sean at the red carpet for the MTV VMAs and he came up to me and he liked my music. And I had been a huge fan of Sean Paul myself, so I got his number and I hit him up two days later. I was like, “Listen I’ve got he song for you,” I sent it off to him, he did the same thing, sent it back—he was in Jamaica, I was in New York—but we did it and I was so, so happy.
Who do you think got shafted by the Grammys this year?
I don’t know, I think it was pretty fair. The people I expected to get nominated got nominated. The Grammys is a funny thing. People don’t look at Grammys as though that’s the end all and be all, like that’s the only measure of an artist. Sometimes it’s not, some people are extremely successful who might get overlooked by the Grammy because it’s not a hype thing, I think anyone who got nominated should just be happy, not with how many they got. I would be happy to have just one!

Here’s a clip of The Official Michael Jackson Opus being previewed by Al Roker on NBC’s The Today Show back in August:
