Sean Kingston 7 Things You Need To Know
Brought Back 2 Life

Jamaican pop superstar Sean Kingston is back, and while I can’t reveal any details about his upcoming album Back 2 Life (I heard a few tracks, and it’s sounding quite promising), I can turn the reins over to him to let him share a little bit about the new project with you. Just a few things. Seven things, in fact!

Kingston explained that he’s been hard at work in the studio developing a newly “organic” sound, as he describes it — plus teaming up with friends like Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa — and while his mentor, industry legend J.R. Rotem, is still playing a pivotal role in the album’s production, he says his fresh vibe should satisfy old and new fans alike. (It will.) More »

Bottom's Up

Rick Ross has premiered the video for “Box Chevy,” off his forthcoming album Mastermind. Actually, it’s no mere music video, it’s a 10-minute “Dre Films/Maybach Films Picture.” The tale follows a couple dudes plotting to rob Rozay, that fearsome drug kingpin, and there’s plenty of double-crossing, twerking and flashbacking. Add in a bevy of expensive cars, and it all feels like those blockbuster hip-hop videos of the late ’90s, like “Hypnotize.” See how the tale ends up top. More »

Janelle Monae & Erykah Badu’s “Q.U.E.E.N.” Video: Watch Them Break Free

Her Majesties

It’s so good to have Janelle Monae back in our lives, isn’t it? We were already obsessed with “Q.U.E.E.N.,” Monae’s collaboration with Erykah Badu, and now The Electric Lady‘s lead single has gotten an equally enthralling video treatment. The tale begins in the Living Museum, “where legendary rebels throughout history have been frozen in suspended animation.” And — you guessed it — among those trapped are Janelle and her Wondaland crew and their “dangerous accomplice” Badoula Oblongata, banished for launching Project Q.U.E.E.N. back in the 21st Century.

It’s exactly the type of stylishly futuristic and playfully absurd aesthetic we’ve come to expect from Monae, and the dystopian intro perfectly sets the tone for the defiant and quirky jam that follows. More »

Alicia Keys’ “New Day” Video: See Alicia Dance!

Alicia Keys New Day Video
Brand New One

Alicia Keys finally got the fire extinguisher and put out that girl who was on fire (poor thing), and now she’s switching gears a bit in the video for her new single, “New Day,” an anthemic Swizz Beatz-produced track from her latest LP Girl On Fire(She just premiered the video for her Maxwell duet “Fire We Make,” but — surprise! — here’s another one.)

The video is a hodgepodge of a few different things: There’s sexy close-up glamour shots of Keys; there’s footage of her performing in concert, where she rocks some impressive choreography (we don’t associate Alicia Keys with dancing like that!); and then there’s shots of her dancing in an alley while graffiti artists tag the walls. What do these things have to do with each other? Nothing! Nothing at all, but that’s fine, really. Even if it doesn’t have much in the way of narrative cohesion, it still looks good. More »

Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side” Video: Watch Him Dance Up A Storm

Jason Derulo The Other Side Video
Take Him!

Our friend Jason Derulo (who popped by the Idolator offices just last week to chat about junk food and Game of Thrones, because what else are you going to talk to Jason Derulo about?) has premiered the video for his new single “The Other Side,” and it may hit close to home if you have deep emotional ties to 1) dancing and/or 2) making out. Them’s the highlights, folks.

Not that we’re complaining: The Colin Tilley-directed clip, which sees Derulo at the bottom of an emotional spiral (and dancing his way to the top, maybe?) features some impressive fancy footwork — even with all the flashing lights and quick cuts, there are some things you just can’t fake. The other major takeaway: His neck seems to be all better! More »

Dido’s “End Of Night” Video: Watch The Eerie Clip

Dido End of Night Video
Good "Night"

Dido didn’t dazzle us with her last LP, Girl Who Got Away (we called it “sweet beige,” which remains a pretty accurate assessment), but the album’s clear highlight was the Greg Kurstin-produced electro-lite number “End of Night,” which the British songstress has wisely chosen as her next single. Kurstin’s sharp pop production coupled with Dido’s keen songcraft (“You were careless when the beat kicked in / And careless when it left” is a pretty good crying-at-the-disco lyric, as these things go) makes for an engaging enough listen, and the video for the song provides a solid visual accompaniment. Empire Of The Sun’s “Alive” Video: Watch The Absurd, Futuristic Clip

Empire of the Sun Alive Video
A Futuristic Empire

Empire of the Sun aren’t pulling any punches with the visual campaign for their new album: After unveiling the first single from their new album, the synthpop gem “Alive,” they’ve now debuted the music video for the song, which is a likably campy science fiction adventure.

The video has the grand scale of a blockbuster fantasy film (although perhaps not a Bruckheimer budget), following Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore through a series of futuristic tableaux — desert bluffs and a forest and even an ocean, because sure. The outfits are laughable and the special effects are effectively goofy, and while there are moments of pathos — the girl draped in furs is a neat touch — the absurdity of the video makes the song feel less intimate, doesn’t it? Oh well.

The band’s sophomore LP, Ice on the Dune, is due out June 18. See the track list below. More »

Selena Gomez Glams Up In “Come & Get It” Video Trailer: Watch

Selena Gomez "Come & Get It" Video Trailer
She Came & Got It

Being Selena Gomez looks like fun, doesn’t it? Everywhere you go, people are trying to dress you up in beautiful outfits and style you like some ridiculous character:  Bhangra princess! 1920s flapper! Video game heroine! Karaoke superstar! Justin Bieber‘s girlfriend! Weird. So many weird characters that they’re trying to make Selena Gomez play.

The video for her new single “Come & Get It” doesn’t look quite as high-concept as all that — based on the 30-second trailer that was just unveiled, the clip just looks lush and fantastical, like it probably has lots of glamour shots of Selegend looking stunning in majestic locales and not much else. (That’s fine — it’s what we’re all here to see, anyway.) There’s vibrant fields of flowers and an underwater sequence and lots of flowing fabric (based on this video, Selena literally loves fabric) and she’s wearing bold red lipstick so it’s unlikely that anyone will have too many complaints about it. We probably won’t.  More »

Union J’s “Carry You”: Watch The Boys In Transit In Their Debut Video

April 29th, 2013 // Leave a Comment
Union J Will Carry You

This might be sacrilegious, but as far as we can tell, British boyband Union J could give fellow X Factor alumni One Direction a run for their money in the charm department. After releasing their debut single a week ago, the group has premiered an official music video for the song, and it’s pretty adorable. The vid follows George, JJ, Jaymi and Josh as they do things that teenage boys are wont to do: skateboard, ride bikes, shop for records, ride in taxis. (They sure do a lot of moving, don’t they? They can’t sit still!) The typical teenage fun is interspersed with shots of the boys performing for an energetic crowd at an open mic night that was advertised at the record store.

As far as concepts go, the video is a simple one: It’s more about the boys as a band than establishing any specific romantic interests to direct the song towards. But that’s not a bad thing in this case, because we’re still getting to know them as a group. Also, did we mention that they’re adorable? Because they really are. More »

Cody Simpson Performs “Pretty Brown Eyes” Live: Idolator Exclusive

April 29th, 2013 // Leave a Comment
A Pretty Little Ditty

It wasn’t enough to let young Cody Simpson take over our Twitter feed — we also let the 16-year-old take over Idolator headquarters last week. Just one day after the release of his Capri Sun-filled pool party of his “Pretty Brown Eyes” video, the Australian singer was in our Los Angeles studio treating us to his first-ever acoustic performance of the track. (And when we say “first-ever acoustic performance,” we mean that this was the first time he had tried to play the song on the acoustic guitar — ever!)

Watch above as Mr. Simpson nails the song the first time out of the gate. More »
