Hey, it’s Beyonce! A global superstar who now, apparently, only premieres new music in the context of corporate partnerships. That’s probably why Beyonce is richer than us.

Yes, after giving us a little taste of “Grown Woman” as part of her Pepsi campaign a few weeks ago, the superstar has yet again unveiled a 90-second snippet of a new song — this one a clattering, island-infused pop banger called “Standing On the Sun” — as the soundtrack for an H&M commercial which sees King Bey rolling around in the sun and strutting her stuff in a bikini. (She walks with a vengeance, in fact.) The track, penned by Greg Kurstin and Sia, sounds like a summery pop hit. She could even release it to radio, if she felt so inclined. (Does Beyonce do that anymore?) More »

‘The Great Gatsby’ Soundtrack: Hear The xx’s “Together”

April 24th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

You’d think The xx‘s quiet minimalism wouldn’t exactly fit in the extravagant, blown-out universe Baz Luhrmann has created for The Great Gatsby, but the sultry Brits sound right at home on the film’s star-studded soundtrack. “Together” uses the group’s spare foundation to dial into the yearning romance and slight sense of doom at the center of Jay Gatsby’s tale.

It’s all boilerplate xx (which is still really good!), but then a drum machine kicks in around the 3:00 mark followed by — whoa! — melodramatic, Lana-like strings. Apparently even The xx are powerless to the luxurious temptations of Gatsby’s world. Hear it below. More »

2 Chainz Gets Dark For “Like Me” Video: Watch The Masked MC

2 Chainz, 1 Ski Mask

2 Chainz has dropped a grainy black-and-white video for his The Weeknd-sampling “Like Me.” Chainz wears a Chanel ski mask (not to be confused with Justin Bieber‘s “Channel” balaclava) throughout the whole clip, which was directed by Sharod Marcus Simpson. There’s a pretty ominous vibe to go with that foggy Abel Tesfaye sample, and the creepy-chic models and darkly enticing aesthetic certainly remind us of Kanye West. Good stuff!

Whitney Houston’s “I Believe In You And Me” Covered By Ariana Grande: Watch

We Believe!

Ariana Grande quickly attracted Mariah Carey comparisons with the smooth vocal acrobatics and bouncy pop sensibility of “The Way,” and pop fans began thinking, praying, hoping, “Could it be? Could she be the One Voice To Save Us From This #Darkness?” And now, Grande has given us another reason to believe, posting an a cappella cover of Whitney Houston‘s version of “I Believe In You and Me.” Bold move, right? Very bold!

It starts out hushed (you can hear the ambient noise in the room and her voice echoing), but then Ariana digs her heels in and lets those pipes do some work.  Yup, we’re still believers. Check it out up top. More »

Alicia Keys & Maxwell’s “Fire We Make” Video: The Singers Are Burning Up

Firestarter

Yesterday (April 23) we saw the teaser for Alicia Keys‘ steamy music video with Maxwell, “Fire We Make.” For a 30-second clip, it featured a whole lot of sweating and wriggling. Keys has since premiered the full video, and it turns out it’s even more of a tease. For starters, now we know why it’s so dang hot in that bedroom: the video takes place in the ’50s (we think?) in New Orleans, and there was no air conditioning back then, silly! Keys and Maxwell do some acting to set up the story (B&B owner’s daughter fantasizes about one night of hot passion with B&B patron), but the two stars spend most of the tale separated. Many stolen glances ensue. Find out if they start that fire up top.

Ready To Dance?

Are you ready to dance, Jason Derulo fans? And are you fully prepared to be taken to the other side? Last week Jason teased us all by handing over a mere 90 seconds of his lyric video for brand new single “The Other Side.” (Very cruel of him, wouldn’t you say?) The song, in case you haven’t been paying attention, is the first taste of Derulo’s upcoming third album.

Now we finally have the full clip, which features the entire song, more dance moves, more lyrics being spelled out and, most importantly, MORE JASON DERULO. Much like you, we just don’t have the time in the day to train to be as nimble on our toes as Jason. So just hit play above, and let the R&B-pop singer himself show you how it’s done. More »

Muse Tweak Psychedelic “Panic Station” Video After Flag Controversy: Watch

Let's Try This Again

Muse are back with a video for “Panic Station,” the fifth single from their current album The 2nd LawThe clip sees the British band taking time off their world tour to explore the streets of Tokyo in eccentric costumes, with the city’s colorful lights providing a vibrant backdrop. It’s a psychedelic and wonderful world the band depicts, but when it first premiered Monday (April 22), the video became an unlikely source of controversy and was quickly pulled due to some objectionable WWII imagery.

The original edit featured a shot of the Imperial Japanese Army Flag, and upon seeing the Rising Sun image, many Asians took offense, some equating it to using Nazi imagery. The band quickly apologized on Twitter and revised the video. Check out the new version up top, and click through to see Muse’s tweet. More »

On Fire, Indeed

After finishing off 2012 with a surge of momentum that carried over into early 2013, things have been relatively quiet for Alicia Keys. In fact, as far as we know, the Girl on Fire is still finishing up the National Anthem at the Superdome. But she’s back now with a preview of the music video for “Fire We Make,” her steamy duet with Maxwell. The full visual is directed by music video veteran Chris Robinson and this snippet features a sweaty Keys rubbing herself with ice and writhing around on the floor. We’re somehow still dealing with winter temperatures here in New York, but this little teaser has us fanning ourselves.

Tegan & Sara’s “I Was A Fool” Video: Watch The Moody Clip

April 23rd, 2013 // 1 Comment
We Were All Fools

Tegan and Sara have finally released the video for their legitimately flawless (seriously, there isn’t a single flaw in this song) single “I Was A Fool,” and after even a lyric video (a freakin’ lyric video!) that was dazzling in its sad, luminous intimacy, it comes as no surprise that the clip is as gorgeously elegiac in its remembrances of relationships past as the song itself is.

Following a girl (played by Mae Whitman, who got pretty glammed-up for this, didn’t she?) as she rids herself of the vestiges of a bygone relationship. There isn’t much else that you need to know: It’s sad and pitch-perfect, just like everything else from the sisters Quin’s Heartthrob era.  More »
