Arizona’s War On Rap Continues

Fri Feb 27 2009 by Dan Gibson

At some point in the last year, my home state decided we just don’t care for the hip hop music. (Perhaps the tensions started simmering when Public Enemy put out “By The Time I Get To Arizona”?) First, a bouncer at a Tempe club hit one of the guys from Kidz In The Hall in the eye, then the DMX witch hunt (can’t a man keep drugs and pit bulls at his house?) and his dreadful prison stay. But last night, one man decided to take matters into his own hands.

MC Hammer And Vanilla Ice To Bump Into Each Other Onstage Tonight

Fri Feb 27 2009 by Dan Gibson

Tonight in Orem, Utah, concertgoers will be able to take in a historic double bill of Vanllia Ice and MC Hammer; the Salt Lake Tribune preview is loaded with great quotes from Vanilla Ice, and when I checked the wires for a recent picture of one or both of the hip-pop stars, I found the above shot of MC Hammer riding a bumper car in the Wisconsin Dells. Combined, it’s just too much for a blogger to resist.

Lily Allen Won’t Let “The New York Times” Into Her House Ever Again

Fri Feb 27 2009 by Maura

Lily Allen was profiled by The New York Times‘ Milena Ryzik earlier this month, and while some people found the piece a bit problematic, the pop singer herself thought it was “great, a really nice piece with a picture of me sat on my sofa,” according to the latest post on her blog. So why, then, is the entry in question called “The New York Time [sic] are cheap skanks”? That would be because the photographs that the paper didn’t use—which were shots of Allen at home—were licensed to the very downmarket tabloid OK!, which plastered a “World Exclusive: At Home With Lily Allen” banner over them. And she didn’t even get a cut of the profits from the photos!

“American Idol” Has To Pray Just To Make It To The End Of Its Hour

Fri Feb 27 2009 by Maura

Last night’s elimination episode of American Idol scuttled its chances for drama once again, with the final “who’s in the top 12″ showdown being between the heavy favorite (this time, Adam Lambert, above) and the week’s comic relief (Nick “Normund Gentle” Mitchell) for the second straight week. Given that there was an actual surprise during the proceedings—babyfaced worship leader Kris Allen, who performed a shaky rendition of “Man In The Mirror” on Wednesday, made it to the finals despite stronger performances by at least two young ladies who didn’t make the cut—you’d think the producers would try and sequence the show so that people would be inspired to tune in all the way through. Perhaps they haven’t looked at the ratings from Wednesday yet?

Is Feb. 27 Too Early To Declare Your Favorite Albums Of The Year So Far?

Fri Feb 27 2009 by Maura

Apparently not, if this NPR blogger’s list—which is topped by the Antlers’ Hospice—is anything to go by. And another site has even snagged a domain name that assures it’ll at least be atop the Google searches for peoples’ favorite records of the year. And yes, OK, OK, I’m guilty of this premature ranking too, albeit in a way that’s much more shape-shifty than the Ten-Album List On A Blog-Shaped Stone Tablet Post from the public radio behemoth’s site. Anyway, feel free to list your favorites from this still-young year in this site’s comments, or peruse other two-month rundowns I found on the Web after the jump!
