Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” Video: Watch People Dance Bravely

Sara Bareilles Brave Video
Dancing Brave

Oh hey, it’s the video for Sara Bareillesvery good single “Brave”! The track — her first taken from her upcoming LP The Blessed Unrest — has a big singalong hook and an inspirational be-your-best-self message, so fittingly, the accompanying clip is nice and sunny: “Normal people” dance like total goons in various locales (a gym, a shopping mall, a bus stop, a library).

The bravest thing about the video, though, is that Bareilles is wearing a black-and-white polka dot blouse on top of black-and-white pants that are covered in cursive writing. Truly courageous. And she even pulls it off! More »

Little Boots Tells Us The 7 Things You Need To Know About ‘Nocturnes’: Watch

Victoria Clues Us In On Her New Album

It’s been nearly four years since Little Boots‘ debut LP Hands arrived, and there’s a pretty solid reason it took so long for Victoria Hesketh to craft its follow-up, the perfectly moody, just-released Nocturnes.

“Everything is throwaway — and not just music — nowadays,” Hesketh told Idolator last week, just before her concert at New York’s Music Hall Of Williamsburg. “It’s just designed to break or designed for you to get bored of it… So it was really important to take the time to craft all the sounds and just try to make it sound one of the more legendary albums that I love.” More »

Christina Aguilera In Talks To Return For ‘The Voice’ Season 5 (For A Rumored $12 Million)

May 14th, 2013 // 4 Comments

Iconic songbird Christina Aguilera is planning to bring her studded diaper back to the swiveling chair for another year: According to The Hollywood Reporterafter taking a year off to work on promoting her album Lotus (which, yikes, didn’t work out very well for her, did it?), the Legend Of The United States is in talks to return to The Voice for a fifth season — and rumor has it that she’s asking for $12 million.  More »

Danity Kane Are Reuniting, Probably

Danity Kane Reuniting LA TMZ
I Danity Kain't

Highly relevant defunct girl group Danity Kane have unofficially unveiled their upcoming reunion via some grainy paparazzi footage and a mostly-dubious TMZ item, but let’s just go with it because we all need a beacon of hope to cling to in these dark, dark days. Four of the five members — Aubrey O’DayDawn RichardShannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres — were spotted having lunch with their new manager in Los Angeles yesterday (D. Woods was too busy, or hates everyone, or whatever), and TMZ claims that “they plan to record and tour.”

But according to reports, Diddy, who created the girl group on Making the Band 3 and then collapsed it in 2009, is not involved in the group at all — and when asked about him, Aubrey O’Day quipped, “Who’s that?” Never change, Aubrey.  More »

The-Dream, Beyonce & 2 Chainz Get “Turnt” Up In New Track: Listen

May 14th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Decades from now, historians will remember the front half of 2013 as “The Great Beyonce Drought,” or maybe “That Time Beyonce Trolled Us All.” Looking for Beyonce to get her grown woman on and give you a full song to bump? Want to buy something on iTunes? Feel like hearing a Beyonce tune on the radio? Sorry! Not gonna happen.

See her in her H&M ad, high above Times Square, mocking you with her flawlessness. See her doing press for a voiceover role in some animated film you only want to see because Beyonce’s in it. See her promise you a new single, a new album, and then go on tour for the next thousand years. It’s all just soda-pop jingles, inexplicable trap-rap promo tracks casually discarded on Tumblr and cartoon balladeering now. Beyonce’s calling the shots, and Beyonce wants it like this.  More »

MS MR singer Lizzy Plapinger is exactly what you want in a frontman/woman. She has pink hair, or sometimes blue. She has an unconventional voice, husky and noir-ish. Most importantly, she has a keen ear for pop: as co-founder of Neon Gold Records, she released early singles from acts like Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding and Icona Pop. But that cool factor looms large over her project with Max Hershenow, giving skeptics a ready-made argument: that MS MR’s success is built on blind faith from a Neon Gold-loving Web.

The most effective way to dispense with any potential buzz-economy bullshit, though, is to put together a debut album as strong as Secondhand Rapture (out today, ). With this full-length, MS MR have crafted a collection of glossy dirges and high-drama doom-dances that operate in the pop world, but aren’t entirely of that world. Rather than neon synths and guitar crunch buttressing the melodies, it’s strings and pianos — but not in the Lana Del Way. Instead, MS MR opt for beauty through weirdness, constructing a record full of spectral echoes, wobbling organs and orchestral maneuvers in the dark. More »

Demi Lovato called her last album Unbroken. Even if the title track was a love song, that name still felt like a reference to the comeback Lovato forged following a widely publicized breakdown that transformed her — from a Disney princess to a troubled teenager to a young woman whose public platform was all about recovery, both personally and professionally.

Two years later, she’s releasing a new LP, but this one is simply titled Demiand that makes perfect sense in a funny sort of way. There’s no need for a canny titular shoutout to some thematic cohesion: After notching the biggest single of her career with last year’s “Give Your Heart a Break” and a banner season showing her mettle as a judge on The X Factor, where she routinely upstaged Britney Spears as the most empathetic and engaged member of the panel, Lovato doesn’t have anything to prove anymore. She’s just herself. More »

‘The Voice’: The Swon Brothers Pay Tribute To Country Legend George Jones

May 14th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Based on what we’re seeing during the live rounds of The Voice, it is very likely that the apocalypse is near. Last week Al Roker appeared to promote The Today Show (Horseman 1). Then there was Wednesday’s miscount incident with the very serious auditor on stage (Horseman 2). Monday night brought the biggest doomsday sign yet: the air conditioning went out for the live show  (gasp!), prompting Adam Levine to fan Carson Daly (Horseman 3), and Usher to strip down to a tank top (no Horseman there, just enjoy the view). Despite the fact that Carson could not stress enough how extreme the heat wave conditions were for the live audience, at least there’s still one more Horseman buffer before a confirmed Doomsday. Rest easy, Voice viewers.

Beyond the extreme heat and lack of Xtina Aguilera’s hand fans, the 12 finalists all competed for America’s votes on Monday night. Check out who kept their cool, and who had a meltdown. More »

Is Beyonce Pregnant Again?: Morning Mix

May 14th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Did You Hear?

:: Is Blue Ivy already going to be a big sister? The music industry has been on Beyonce Baby Bump Watch after the singer’s appearance at last week’s Met Gala, and internet sleuths have been using MS Paint to point out supposed photo evidence of a bump. Now “sources” have told a certain newspaper with a spotty track record that Bey is, in fact, pregnant again. [New York Post]

:: Selena Gomez has confirmed that she and Justin Bieber are no longer an item. She gave cagey answers to In Style last week, but the singer was much clearer on Boston’s Kiss 108 while promoting “Come & Get It.” Sel told the hosts she’s completely available and looking for someone to take her on an ice cream date. Yum! [MTV]

:: Nicki Minaj is a cover girl once again as she graces the June/July issue of Teen Vogue in a Barb-approved cotton candy dress. The rapper compares the music industry to a “popularity contest” that she can’t be bothered with. Hmm, Mariah Carey shade anyone? [Vibe Vixen]

:: Before Kanye West bumped his head and raged against some paparazzi, he was spotted filming a cameo for Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Now there are photos from the set, which includes Yeezy (in character) tackling Steve Carrell‘s character with a hockey stick. [Celebuzz]

:: If anyone knows how to make a bad first impression, it’s Chris Brown. The entertainer got into some trouble with his Hollywood Hills neighbors after they claimed his goblin art frightened the local children. He should probably tone it down if he ever wants to be invited to the next potluck. [The Hollywood Reporter]

:: Ryan Seacrest is working on a new music series for Telemundo. The American Idol host will be producing Superstar Showdown, where two established artists will go head to head for the audience’s vote. [Billboard]

Daft Punk’s “Lose Yourself To Dance”: Hear Pharrell’s Other ‘Random Access Memories’ Track

May 13th, 2013 // 3 Comments

OK so the full Daft Punk album has finally been unleashed upon the world (in streaming form, at least). These are exciting times! And you should definitely listen to the whole thing straight through before you start plucking out single tracks. But! We want to isolate one track in particular for now — “Lose Yourself to Dance” — because it’s the album’s other track with Pharrell (the first, of course, being lead single “Get Lucky”).

This cut shares many of the hallmarks of that single: a talk box, Nile Rodgers‘ crystalline guitar lines, Pharrell’s appealingly thin falsetto. But for us, at least, everything comes together in a more compelling package here. Whereas “Get Lucky” sounded classic, this sounds like classic Daft Punk. That’s our first impression, anyway. Check it out below. More »
