Justin Bieber, Frank Ocean, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Score O Music Awards Nominations

May 16th, 2013 // 1 Comment

The 2013 O Music Awards nominations are out. And reading the list will handily remind you that you are one of the olds. Unless you’re not one of the olds, in which case, you’ll probably hashtag the eff out of these nominations. Because the awards celebrate “the best in digital music,” so of course they act like the trendy cousin and drop a bunch of inside jokes that the Grammys and Billboard Music Awards don’t get but laugh at anyway. Case in point: there are categories called Our Favorite Musical Cat, Fan Army FTW and Too Much Ass For TV. We don’t know what any of that has to do with celebrating “the best in digital music,” but we do know that Frank Ocean is up for the Ass one, as well as for Must-Follow Artist On Twitter.

Ocean’s two nominations tie him with Beck for the most nods. It’s ironic that Beck is honored by the digital-centric awards, since his most recent release was sheet music (which is why he’s up for Analog Genius). Justin Bieber is nominated for Fan Army FTW for the Beliebers, facing off against the legion of stans like Demi Lovato‘s Lovatics, Beyonce‘s Beyhive, Ed Sheeran‘s Sheerios and Selena Gomez‘s Selenators. Breakout rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is up for Best Web-Born Artist, along with Kitty, Baauer, FIDLAR and Angel Haze, although we don’t really think those last two fit in that field.  More »

Frank Ocean Joins Drake For OVO Fest 2013

May 16th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Drake is throwing a music festival in Toronto this summer, because Canada, right? The 4th annual OVO Fest (named after his October’s Very Own label) kicks off August 4 at Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, with tickets going on sale this Friday (May 24) at 10am — and now he’s fleshing out the line-up, adding Frank Ocean and James Blake to the roster. (They’re both performing on August 4, while Drake will be hitting the stage with “special guests” on August 5. Last year’s guests included Nicki Minaj and Snoop Lion, so they’ll probably be pretty good this year, too.)

It’s shaping up to be quite a festival summer, no? See the poster below. More »

Kanye West Performs New Song “So Awesome” Live, Calls Himself “The Worst Kind Of Celebrity”

May 16th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Kanye West had quite an evening last night at the Roseland Ballroom, where he performed a 90-minute set as part of the Adult Swim Upfront; halfway through, he went on a lively rant about his role in celebrity culture and the paparazzi (which has probably gotten much worse since The Dawn of Kimye, so sure, it would probably be on my mind, too).

“I ain’t no muthafuckin celebrity,” he reportedly said. “There’s one thing about me — I’m a terrible, terrible terrible celebrity. I don’t know if you really know there’s one thing about me but I’m the worst kind of celebrity. All I do is make real music. All I do is sit in the studio and make real shit. And that’s it. And that’s motherfuckin’ it. That’s motherfuckin’ it!” More »

Diddy’s ‘Downton Abbey’ Guest Spot Turns Out To Be A ‘Funny Or Die’ Sketch: Watch

Diddy on Downton Abbey
Diddy Does Downton

Ah, well. I got my hopes up so high for Diddy‘s starring role on Downton Abbey and it turned out that the whole thing was just a big dumb publicity stunt for the mogul’s Funny or Die video, which was actually pretty funny, but not as funny as actually having Diddy on Downton Abbey would have been. But still, well played, Diddy. Well played.

The sketch, coming off the heels of the announcement that Downton Abbey would have their first black cast member, sees Diddy joining as Lord Wolcott, the new lord of Downton (he pronounces it “Downtown,” which is not as funny a bit as he thinks it is); probably the best moment is Diddy’s implied gay love affair with footman Thomas Barrow, which gives him the opportunity to announce, “I’m Lord Wolcott, and I love everybody!” More »

One Direction Announce ‘Where We Are’ 2014 Worldwide Stadium Tour

May 16th, 2013 // Leave a Comment

Great news for those of you who have spent the last three years furiously tweeting at Harry Styles to come to Brazil: He’s coming to Brazil!

Yes, the doe-eyed, waxen-faced nymphets of One Direction are heading out on a stadium tour (which is pretty nuts that 1D can pack stadiums, and yet ultimately not surprising in the least), which the “Live While We’re Young” boy band announced today via a big, splashy social media campaign called “One Big Announcement,” and well, it’s definitely a good thing for those fans who live in South America and the United Kingdom, but their fans elsewhere were probably expecting an announcement that was, y’know, globally big. Ah, well, Guess you really can’t ever have it all.  More »

B2M Help One Couple Have A Truly Memorable Vacation

In March, we first announced Kia’s Sorento Serenades contest, where three nominated people would be surprised in some manner by meeting legendary vocal group Boyz II Men. (Trust us, the full details were under lock and key, and even we didn’t know what exactly was in store at the time.) Now it’s time to meet Nikki, the first Sorento Serenades winner.

In the clip above, Nikki’s boyfriend of two years, Stephen, discusses their relationship in a voiceover as the happy couple take a trip from Wisconsin to California, where they drive around in their white Sorento. Unbeknownst to Nikki, Stephen is planning on proposing to her while the pair explore the sunny sights in Los Angeles.

As the pair are enjoying a beautiful dinner on their trip, Boyz II Men’s Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman give Nikki a shock by walking up to their table and delivering a chills-inducing a cappella rendition of their classic hit “On Bended Knee.” More »

Mariah Carey, Adam Lambert, PSY To Perform On ‘American Idol’ Finale

May 16th, 2013 // 15 Comments

Well, it’s been a long, bleary season of American Idol, but at last, tonight’s finale is upon us, and the show gets to do what it does best: Promote its own! Yes, the show’s resident diva Mariah Carey will be performing her still-astonishingly-good new single “#Beautiful” (hashtag beautiful) as part of a medley of her greatest hits including “Vision of Love,” “Make It Happen,” “We Belong Together,” “My All” and “Hero.” Randy Jackson will be on bass, and she’ll be backed by a full gospel choir, so it sounds like the performance will be very relaxed and mellow and not at all self-congratulatory. (Then again, if anyone deserves that level of pomp and circumstance, it’s definitely Mariah Carey, right?) More »

A throbbing, insistent bassline. An electronic wall of sound. Semi-creepy synths. And Giorgio Moroder. No, we’re not talking the new Daft Punk album, Random Access Memories, but rather a fresh song by revered Italian producer Moroder called “Racer,” which just popped up online via his SoundCloud account today.

Turns out the haunting dance number was written specifically for Google Chrome’s new Racer game, which was demoed today during the Google I/O keynote. And the game is here, now — it can apparently be played on Chrome on an Android or iOS device this very second.

As for Giorgio’s new jam “Racer,” you can listen to that below. Just be sure to crank up the bass. More »
