Just spent some time on your blog and have bookmarked it... what I have read so far of your thesis is fascinating. I love the words over the imagery of Los Angeles as well.

@nonce:
The point being that we can all just get along by reading fewer blogs and watching more music videos.

@HomefrontRadio:
As somebody subject to about as little entitlement as you can get in the good ol' US of A, my listening habits have been equally shaped by 1) actually hearing said music in question and 2) random encounters made possible by sites like Pitchfork.

For what it's worth, there aren't really any CalArts profs worth blowing anymore.

I don't have scary-comprehensive singles knowledge, but I do know that I was still buying cassingles as a young teen up until around 1992, and that they wavered around the $3 mark.
Also, it kind of unnerves me know to think that there was only a one-year span (roughly) between buying "U Can't Touch This" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on cassingle.
I am also bummed I don't still have those cassingles, especially Soho's "Hippychick."

Chiming in very late to add the praise for MV; and, if you culled tracks off of the previous two albums and sequenced them properly, you would have a pretty solid album.

Far too lazy to do this but I do have to say that my and Maura's 1983 and 1998 match perfectly: I'd even submit Dazzle Ships and California as high on the list for Albums of their Respective Decades.
C'mon, Patton!

The question the "commercial" factor raises in this is whether sales and airplay are relable indicators of "popularity" anymore, especialy since the internet let me borrow both singles and the whole album to preview.
Should bands get points for landing tunes in commercials?

After years of thinking of Oasis as a scourge of scousers, hearing Devendra Banhart's Lennon/"Imagine"-esque take on "Don't Look Back in Anger" as turned me around, because a) it's a decent song and, b) whether it has to do with Banhart or not, the lyrics make *no* sense whatsoever, in a truly WTF kind of way.
Almost as good/bad as Jill Sobule covering "Hot in Herre."

@Maura Johnston:
Actually I was wondering how I could get reimbursed for wasting time and brain cells on all of this hullaballoo, but that's the internet's (and my) fault, not Idolator's.
The internet: it never stops being fascinatingly stupid!
