“A cross between Mary Poppins and Coldplay” is the way Malaysian indie-pop queen Yuna describes her music. Throw in lashings of Sia and Feist, and that description gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the 25-year-old’s recently-released self-titled US debut. With Pharrell Williams on production duties, the album was always going to generate attention. The deeply personal collection of pared-back pop songs performed well on iTunes and will, no doubt, get another boost when Yuna takes her spot on this year’s Lollaplooza festival. She’s also keeping her name out there by dropping quirky covers – the latest of which is a spine-tingling rendition of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”.
