Lana Del Rey On ‘SNL’: Review Revue
Mon Jan 16 2012 by Robbie Daw
Lana Del Rey's performance on Saturday Night Live — some liked it and many hated it. But one thing's for sure: everyone was talking about it. The expectations were high for the hyped-up “Video Games” singer, as this was her debut TV performance in the US, and it was a rare gig to get — one that relatively few artists who have yet to release their debut LP are ever awarded. (For the record, Born To Die is out January 31). Still, her just-released EP has shot up to #2 on iTunes. So somebody did something right. Head below for a roundup of what the critics had to say about Del Rey's big American debut.

The Idolator Hype Index (Week Of 1.8.12)
Fri Jan 13 2012 by Robbie Daw
It's time to get in the habit of waking up on Friday morning, rubbing your bleary eyes and checking out our weekly Pop & Fizz chart, where we rank the top artists and headlines in pop music. This is the second week for the chart, so here’s a reminder on how it works: we rank each artist or major news story according to their size (that’s Rank) and then we weigh how they’re faring overall in the pop zeitgeist (that’s Hype). That’s why, for example, Justin Bieber — whose photos in V caused a retaliation by fans — ranks above relatively unknown (in the States) UK boy band The Wanted, who had an enviable intro to American audiences via Ellen DeGeneres.

Demi Lovato surprised fans last month with a performance of her latest single "Give Your Heart A Break". Adele Set To Tie ‘Titanic’ Soundtrack’s Run — Next Stop: Beating ‘Bodyguard’
Thu Jan 12 2012 by Robbie Daw
Adele missed out on nabbing the People's Choice Awards she was up for (thanks to sweeping songstress Katy Perry), but that hasn't stopped the people from choosing to purchase 21 and its hit singles. "Set Fire To The Rain" moved up to #4 on the new Hot 100 chart published today, thus making it the London singer's third Top 5 hit off her sophomore album. And with 21 currently parked at #1 yet again on the Top 200, Billboard now reports that the LP should have no problem tying the Titanic soundtrack's 16-week run atop the album chart next week.

Wed Jan 11 2012 by Becky Bain
American Idol's 11th season (yes, this show has been on the air for more than a decade) begins on January 18, but instead of being excited for the stuff we can't wait to see — the backstabbing drama during Hollywood week, Steven Tyler's charming incoherency, Jennifer Lopez's flawlessness when it comes to choosing an outfit — we're focusing on the stuff we hope to never see or hear ever again. Jump below for our Top 11. More »
Justin Bieber Is Crowned King Of ‘V’ Magazine (PHOTOS)
Mon Jan 9 2012 by Erika Brooks Adickman
If Sky Ferreira’s pictorial tribute to Madonna wasn’t enough to entice you to pick up the V magazine’s 2012 Music Issue, perhaps Justin Bieber’s cover spread will. One would think this photo spread would bring Beliebers joy, but alas, it seems fans are none too pleased with photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin’s portrayal of the Canadian crooner — or maybe they’re just not too keen on his fashion forward Dolce & Gabbana sweater? Not since Beibs’ 2010 People magazine cover has there been such an negative Twitter outcry. As for JB, the freshly inked pop star shared with V, “Now that I’m on top, everyone wants to bring me down.” More »

Penguin Prison: Popping Up
Thu Jan 5 2012 by Robbie Daw
Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey—Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.
We're 85% sure that Chris Glover, now known professionally as synth-enthusiast and remixer extraordinaire Penguin Prison, is not an aquatic bird. Nor is he incarcerated. This 28-year-old New Yorker is, however, an artist who cut his teeth by dabbling in hip hop and remixing tracks for such artists as Goldfrapp ("Rocket"), Darren Hayes ("Talk Talk Talk") and Ellie Goulding ("Starry Eyed") before releasing his self-titled, groove-slathered first LP under his Penguin Prison monicker last fall. (He previously had an album out under his real name six years ago.)
Having been born in 1983, it makes perfect sense, then, that Chris, who attended school and played in bands with Holy Ghost!'s Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel, first found an appreciation for music courtesy of Michael Jackson. "I remember having a Michael Jackson doll when I was around 5 years old," he tells us. "And I remember having the Thriller album on vinyl and playing it on a Fisher Price record player."
Head below to why just why Penguin Prison is on our Popping Up radar, and why we think he's one to watch in 2012. More »
