1:34 PM on Tue Jan 12 2010 by Becky Bain
It's happening, whether you want it to or not: Simon's leaving American Idol. But don't worry—we've given this almost 24 hours of thought, and we think we've got the whole situation sorted out: Why Simon really left; how to cope with his exit; and, while we're at it, whether Idol should continue at all, and if so, how. We break it down for you after the jump. More »

It’s Official: Ke$ha Will Stumble To #1 On This Week’s Album Chart

2:57 PM on Mon Jan 11 2010 by Robbie Daw
Ke$ha's camp has reason to raise a glass of champagne—or, perhaps more appropriately, a Styrofoam cup of grain alcohol—as the 22-year-old singer will officially unseat reigning chart queen Susan Boyle from Billboard's Top 200 Albums this week. Yeesh! Were we too hasty in predicting she'd be tossed into the pop scrap heap at some point in the near future? More »

Blast To The Past With Destiny’s Child Song Leaks

10:43 AM on Fri Jan 8 2010 by Becky Bain
Could the recent spurt of leaks of unreleased Destiny's Child songs be some sort of kooky marketing campaign to promote the girl group's long-rumored reunion? We know it seems crazy. There's a better chance that Justin Timberlake will decide he'd be better off reuniting with N Sync or that Robbie Williams will take an interest in whatever the other members of Take That are up to. Plus, we've been hearing these rumors for awhile with no real evidence of movement toward a bona fide DC reunion. Still, these two leaked tracks are a joyful reminder of the decade we just left behind. Listen to "Life Like This" and "Twirk" after the jump. More »

Ke$ha Is Posing A Wobbly But Serious Threat To Susan Boyle’s Chart Reign

2:49 PM on Wed Jan 6 2010 by Robbie Daw
Roll out the keg and slap on the Manic Panic Blurpie hair dye—it looks as Ke$ha might cause Susan Boyle to hit a sour note by ending the Scottish hellion's six-week reign at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart next week. More »

Alanis Morissette: The Only Star We Trust To Actually Write A Book

12:59 PM on Wed Jan 6 2010 by Becky Bain
Apparently done for the time being with haphazardly matching her rambling poetry to Indian-infused music, Alanis Morissette is writing a book. Something tells us we don't have to worry about the introspective pop star utilizing a ghostwriter, as can often happen with certain other celebrity-"written" books. More »

Omarion Is ‘Speedin’ On His New Single, But Did Someone Carjack His Site?

11:29 AM on Tue Jan 5 2010 by Robbie Daw
Onetime B2K singer (and former brief member of the Young Money roster) Omarion will see his new album Ollusion released on January 12. And as he tweeted yesterday, it will be on available at Amazon's MP3 store with a 24-hour sale price of $3.99.

That said, Omarion might want to spend less time on Twitter and more time on his own site, which appears to have been hacked some time ago. At least let's hope so, because if the following post in the News section was intentional, the R&B singer's camp has some quirky notions about how to promote him. More »

‘True Poet’ Kanye West Blogs About His New Music

10:43 AM on Mon Jan 4 2010 by Robbie Daw
Now, folks, just because it's a new year doesn't mean Kanye West won't be lobbing more OOC zingers at the masses via his blog. Why, just this morning the Grammy-nominated rapper posted a new entry—in all caps, naturally— where he compared himself to "true poets" like Maya Angelou, Gill Scott Heron and Nina Simone, while pointing out that "so many rappers get worse as their careers stretch out." (But not Kanye!)

Oh, yeah—somewhere in there was the info that he's working on his next set of tunes, with "the same dedication that Kobe has on the court." Mind you, that sort of got eclipsed by his rant about telling us to "look down upon those who masquerade as truth tellers and objective fact givers."

Why Kanye and Courtney Love haven't teamed up and opened a joint Twitter account at this point is beyond us. Sift through Kanye's full blog post below the jump. More »

The Decade’s Top 10 Pop Star Guest Appearances On ‘The Simpsons’

1:19 PM on Mon Dec 28 2009 by Becky Bain
Twenty-one seasons in, The Simpsons continues to shine as a beacon of smart, funny TV. But it is also one of our favorite cultural fun-house mirrors, and we'd be remiss if we didn't spend a moment looking back on the decade of pop that was through the prism that is America's best dysfunctional animated family. As we usher in 2010, we share our Top 10 picks for the best pop star appearances on The Simpsons over the last ten years (with "pop" being v-e-r-y loosely defined in order to accommodate our faves). Our list is in chronological order, making it all the easier to see how music—and the show—evolved through the 00s (starting with bubblegum pop, ending with edgier acts). Is anyone surprised that Bart, Homer, Marge Lisa and the gang have had longer careers than some of their guests? More »

Kate Voegele Sings ‘Hallelujah’ For The Holidays

6:37 PM on Fri Dec 25 2009 by Idolator Staff
Kate Voegele, perhaps best known for her recurring role on One Tree Hill, has pulled out a daring cover of Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say" on her recent tour (note: not even Derulo seems willing to try it without that Imogen Heap sample piping in behind him). But OTH fans know she's fairly fearless when it comes to taking on prominent songs: she tried her hand at Leonard Cohen's iconic "Hallelujah" on the show last year, and just released a new version with a proper video. She has a nice take on it. Need proof? More »

Beyonce’s ‘Black Culture’ Leaks

11:24 AM on Wed Dec 23 2009 by Robbie Daw
Is Beyonce feeling nostalgic? First she picks "Fever," the sultry tune popularized by Peggy Lee in 1958, as the theme for her first-ever fragrance. Now we hear a previously unreleased party jam, "Black Culture," built on a sample of a very prominent 30-year-old hit. So far there's no real indication of the song's vintage, but it samples Michael Jackson's 1979 classic "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," and contains such seemingly hastily-cobbled-together lyrics as "let's hook up, when we start we won't stop, baby don't stop, c'mon give me some of that stuff." Sure, "Black Culture" likely wouldn't have sent any more Grammy nominations Beyonce's way, but it's still a fun listen. Give it a spin below. More »
