“The new album by R & B spitfire Amerie is out today.” That’s a sentence that I thought I’d never get to write on Idolator, despite her being one of my favorite singers for the duration of this site’s existence. And to make the news even better, In Love And War—which is her first U.S. release since 2005, thanks to Sony botching the release of Because I Love It two years ago—is quite good, even joy-inducing in spots. (It could maybe be pared of a song or two; the Lil Wayne remix of her artistic-statement single “Heard ‘Em All” is the definition of CD-era filler.) “But why do you like it,” you ask? I’ll tell you! After the jump, five reasons why it’s worth hunting it down at your preferred outlet for purchasing music. More »

Someone Decided That The Sugababes Needed A Kingston Feature
Yesterday, a six-track sampler of the original take on the Sugababes’ made-for-American-audiences Sweet 7 leaked—the difference between this record and the soon-to-be-released album is the presence of Keisha Buchanan, who last month was unceremoniously booted from the girl group and replaced with Eurovision-tested singer Jade Ewen. The sampler contains the already-released (and underwhelming) “Get Sexy” and “About A Girl,” as well as one track that made me chuckle mirthlessly over just how badly the group’s handlers wanted to try and break the girls in the States. A Very Special Mix CD: Ten Songs That Kelly Clarkson Should Listen To That Aren’t “Pork & Beans”
Kelly Clarkson had her turn in the New York Times‘ “Playlist” chair yesterday, and the results were, well, mixed. Weezer’s red album got a shoutout, as did the Irish band The Script, who Clarkson described as–eek!–”OneRepublic meets rap.” Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Aw, Kelly. Listen. In honor of you being my favorite American Idol (and having one of my favorite albums of the year) (well, except for all those songs by the OneRepublic guy, which are just plodding and terrible and tuneless and ugh), I decided to craft a mix CD for you. Because girl, there is there is so much music out there that you would love–and that would probably love you back! More »

Amerie Brings The Mic Close, Her Listeners Closer
Amerie’s video for “Why R U,” which is the first single off what I guess is going to try and be her comeback album In Love & War, is a pretty standard affair: Amerie stands and lounges in front of various walls while miming the track, flaunting her legs to maximum effect. I’m hoping that Def Jam’s attempt to remarket Amerie after the fizzling of Because I Love It works on both a commercial level and an appealing-to-me level. And it’s probably a good sign that “Why R U” has grown on me a lot since its release last month–although I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that feeling was in large part to it being included on the better-with-every-spin ziptape The Future Of R & B: Volume 26, which you should definitely snag if you haven’t already. Amerie Returns, With A Lot Of Questions
The title of Amerie’s first album on Def Jam has been changed from Breakups To Makeups to In Love And War, and the first single is the pleading ballad “Why R U,” on which Amerie struggles through her feelings for a dude who’s not all that nice, when all is said and done. To these ears, it sounds like a slightly reworked take on her mixtape-only ballad “Get Gone,” which didn’t appear on Amerie’s ill-fated final album for Columbia, Because I Love It; it’s got a smooth early-’90s R & B feel, and it’s certainly made me curious about what the rest of the album–which is being produced by LA Reid, in part–will sound like. Our “Now!” Comps Have So Much Growing Up To Do
Britain’s The Independent celebrates the 70th incarnation of the pop-comp series Now! with an extensive list of the hits and misses among the compilation’s selections, which number 2,701 songs over the last 25 years. While the quality level of our Stateside counterpart doesn’t nearly reach the heights of the original (the first volume of the UK series featured “Love Cats,” after all), surely I could do the same for the 28 volumes that have shown up on our shores, and in our stores.

Solange Reigns Supreme Over Her Elephant-Filled World
The clip for Solange’s “Sandcastle Disco” premiered on FNMTV Friday night, and while I take issue with the idea that “no one else” out there is making music like this right now, which one of the show’s panelists espoused–the fact that Amerie’s Because I Love It never came out over here doesn’t… More »
Amerie Signs To Def Jam, Will Maybe Get To Release An Album
Rebounding from rumors of being dropped by Columbia after the blog love for her last album, Because I Love It, failed to inspire the label to release it Stateside, Amerie has signed to Def Jam and is already hard at work on her first album for the label, Ironically, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony finally releases Because I Love It (at least on iTunes) if Def Jam succeeds in making Amerie an across-the-board. After all, it’s bound to be referenced in every article.
The latest rumor: Amerie is on the verge of signing with Island Def Jam, and her long-delayed-in-the-States album Because I Love It will finally be released by the label. More »
