Wed Apr 20 2011 by Robbie Daw
The New York Times reports today that "I Need A Doctor" rap legend Dr. Dre, whose Detox is due out sometime before the End Days, has successfully sued the current owners of his former label Death Row Records over a royalty dispute. Dre parted ways with Death Row co-owner Suge Knight in 1996 when he left the label. Ten years later the record company slid into bankruptcy, and its assets were subsequently purchased by WIDEawake Entertainment Group in 2009. There was just one problem—WIDEawake didn't have the rights to sell Dre's classic debut LP The Chronic digitally.

To tide you over, jump below to check out another track, "My Prescription", which, as far as we know, could be on the final track list or may just be a leftover. We won't know til Detox drops... whenever that is.

Tue Feb 22 2011 by Robbie Daw
Last week Lil' Kim was unleashing her venom for Nicki Minaj—with the cover of her Black Friday mixtape, the video for the tape's title song and in her interview with Rap-Up.com. However, the site has posted part two of its one-on-one with Kimmy Blanco, and in addition to news that she's collaborating with Dr. Dre, the diminutive rapstress is singing a much friendlier tune when it comes to other pop stars like Rihanna, Usher and Lady Gaga.

The Morning Mix: ‘American Idol’ Sends Contestant From Obscurity To Homelessness
Wed Jan 19 2011 by Becky Bain
Did You Hear?
:: American Idol's Alex Lambert admits via Twitter that he has been homeless since being tosses out of the now-defunk If I Can Dream house. (Guess he wasn't able to keep that bright green Ford Fiesta?) Don't feel too bad for him, though: "I have money! And soon I will have a place to stay! I just wanted to let yall know! I'm not some rich spoiled kid!" Noted. [Huffington Post]
:: Elton John and David Furnish show off the latest addition to their family, their son Zachary. Aww. [Just Jared]
:: Thanks to the success of her Golden Globe-winning song "You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me", Cher is the only artist to score a #1 single on a Billboard chart in each one of the last six decades. [Billboard]
:: Melissa Etheridge will be playing St. Jimmy in the American Idiot musical for a week this February. (That would be the role Billie Joe Armstrong is currently playing.) Strange stunt casting — but we kind of dig it. How about letting Adam Lambert get a shot at it? [Vulture]
:: Sorry Dr. Dre fans — no Detox on 4/20. Don't worry, we're sure you'll still have a good time that day watching Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa's High School. [MTV]

Eminem, Jay-Z And 50 Cent Guest On Dr. Dre’s “Syllables”
Tue Dec 28 2010 by Becky Bain
Yesterday Twitter was aflutter with the possibility of an all-star collab called "Syllables", featuring Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. Voila! Less than a day later the track dropped on the net. Word is that this is an older track (Vulture suspects it's pre-Recovery at a minimum), so it's unlikely to make Dr. Dre's forthcoming Detox. But it's a rare collabo, and it's chock of biting lines about the sorry state of songwriting.

Best Music 2010: J. Cole Speaks On His Top Album And The State Of Hip-Hop
Thu Dec 23 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
Best Of 2010 lists continue to crop up from various music critics (and, um, us) as we all continue to define and digest the sound of 2010. But what about the artists who helped shape it? As a special holiday treat to you, we’ve picked a special class of singers, musicians and groups — artists we consider among the most creative emerging stars in pop — to participate in our special year-end feature. Here, they exclusively share with us their reflections on the albums, songs and performers that made their year really… pop. And in many cases, their answers were surprising.
Thus far in our year-end series, Adam Lambert waxed poetic about Sia, Far East Movement trumpeted Eminem's Recovery, and Enrique Iglesias threw a curveball by standing up for Linkin Park's "Waiting For The End". But today we turn to rising Roc Nation star J. Cole, who burst onto the scene this year and is poised for a HUGE 2011. Which album helped restore Cole's faith in hip-hop? You might be surprised — check below. More »
