Popping Up: School Gyrls
12:45 PM on Tue Feb 23 2010 by Robbie Daw
Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey, Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.
If you caught Nickelodeon's mini-movie School Gyrls on Sunday, then you got a proper glimpse of the teenage pop tart trio who were front and center in the Nick Cannon-directed feature. (Mariah's husband co-wrote and exec-produced, as well.) And rest assured, these young women plan to keep on earning plenty of extra credit once the final bell rings in their movie. In addition to School Gyrls' dance-jam single "Something Like A Party" (on iTunes now), there is a full album from Island Def Jam on the way, as well as both an Archie Comics series and a set of teen novels based on the group.
After the jump: Jacque, Mandy and Monica give us the low-down on Justin Bieber—who made a cameo in School Gyrls—as well as their upcoming album. More »

11:35 AM on Mon Feb 15 2010 by Becky Bain
The Kids Choice Awards nominations were announced, and although some people think you can only be a Lady Gaga fan or a Taylor Swift fan because of their polar-opposite ideologies, apparently children are able to idolize both artists simultaneously. Gaga and Swift are head-to-whatever-is-resting-on-Lady-Gaga's-head-at-the-time in two categories, Favorite Female Singer and Favorite Song. The Morning Mix: Lady Gaga Inks A Message For Her Little Monsters
5:34 AM on Wed Feb 3 2010 by Becky Bain
Lady Gaga isn't just paying lip service to her little monsters when she says she loves nothing more than her fans; she uploaded a twitpic of her brand new "Little Monsters" tattoo "on the arm that holds my mic... so proud." We're just happy she didn't get the face of the raunchy creature from the 1989 gross-out kiddie flick "Little Monsters" tattooed on her body for all eternity. Whew.

Nick Jonas Celebrates His Album Release By Singing “Halo” And “Poker Face”
2:00 PM on Tue Feb 2 2010 by Robbie Daw
How does Nick Jonas promote the release of Who I Am, his new album with side project The Administration? By singing other artists' songs!
A video of the VMAN cover guy banging out Beyonce's "Halo" and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face"—albeit for about five seconds each—was added to the Jonas Brothers' official YouTube channel today. And the trio's fellow "We Are The World" participant Jordin Sparks just happened to be on hand to join in on the shenanigans. Granted, Nick's stab a silly humor is a little schmaltzy. But we're just still enthralled with Joe Jonas' geek chic look. So let's head below and get another look at those Clark Kent specs! More »

The 2010 Academy Award Nominations: Where Are The Music Stars?
8:18 AM on Tue Feb 2 2010 by Robbie Daw
Wow. And we were grousing that the Grammys are usually an old boys club. The nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were announced this morning, and—no surprise here—Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the pack with nine nominations each. Among those, James Cameron's blue-hued 3D epic snagged a nod for Original Score. But Leona Lewis' Avatar theme song "I See You," which was nominated for a Golden Globe, was snubbed. In fact, there weren't any major pop stars (no offense to Academy standby Randy Newman) singled out this year—not even Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, for her critical fave Where The Wild Things Are tunes.
