Miley Cyrus: Still The Teens’ Choice, At Least For Now

Mon Aug 10 2009 by Maura

Miley Cyrus, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, and Paramore were the big music-related winners at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, which were presented last night and will be shown in all their glory on Fox this evening. Britney Spears took home a lifetime achievement surfboard—known as the Ultimate Choice Award—for her contributions to kiddie culture over the course of the award show’s 11-year lifespan. Cyrus, meanwhile, grabbed six boards. That tally includes an award for “Before The Storm,” a collaboration with the Jonas Brothers that is apparently the official song of the summer for those young people motivated enough to vote on these sorts of things. Talk about generational divides! The full list of music-related winners after the jump. More »

Mariah Carey To Star In Her Very Own Issue Of “Elle”

Mon Aug 3 2009 by Maura

Mariah Carey’s forthcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel may have a title that’s in need of a copyeditor, but the inside is going to look like a magazine: Its liner notes, which Island Def Jam concocted in concert with some employees at Elle, will be 34 pages long and chock-full of Mimi-centric editorial, as well as ads for products like Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. The reason for this partnership? Well, let’s just say that it’s not because Carey is a big fan of Elle’s editorial style. More »

The Swine Flu’s Latest Victim: Communal Beer

Thu Jul 30 2009 by Maura

Those people the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany have been told to hold off on kissing other concertgoers and sharing drinks in order to help stifle potential for a swine flu outbreak, thanks to the disease rapidly spreading in the area of Germany where the festival is happening. The local health ministry cites “circumstances of limited hygiene” at the festival—which is expected to draw 75,000 people for sets by the likes of Motörhead, Testament, and GWAR—as the main reason behind its suggestions. In honor of these poor, trapped, hygiene-deprived fans, here are five swine flu-themed songs. (They’re not metal, because not being able to split a beer with your pals is not metal, either.) More »

Attention Aspiring Bridezilla-Fameballs: Here Are Six Songs That You Can Use For “Dancing Down The Aisle” Purposes

Tue Jul 28 2009 by Maura

The much-ballyhooed video featuring a soon-to-be-married couple and their wedding party dancing down the aisle to Chris Brown’s “Forever” has just passed the 10-million-view mark, leaving some chart success for the song (which is still in the iTunes Store’s top 10 as of this writing) in its wake. Perhaps more important than Brown’s career being revived by two people who are not on his payroll, though, is the effect that this clip will have on soon-to-be-married people who want their weddings to be just as special and media-frenzy-like as the blessed union of Kevin Heinz and Jill Peterson. To that end, Idolator presents six songs that could help you, soon-to-be-wedded person, turn your Big Day into a Viral Event. (NB: If you do use one of these suggestions, I accept invitations via e-mail!) More »

Joe Jonas Shows Why Drumming Should Be Left To The Professionals

Mon Jul 27 2009 by Maura

Friday night’s Jonas Brothers show in Philadelphia was marked by a horrible accident in which Joe Jonas decided to show off his drumming skills while his brother Nick was behind the band’s kit—and wound up coming down on the skins just in time to injure one of Nick’s drumming-hands in the process. Sibling rivalry gone wrong, or just a sign that Joe should stick to being “the cute one”? Or both? Footage of the incident, and its aftermath, after the jump. More »

Brake The Drake? “Degrassi” Alum Scales Chart Despite Online Stumbling Blocks

Fri Jul 24 2009 by Chris Molanphy

When the music story of 2009 is written, the year’s debutante queen and king will be Lady GaGa and Drake, who have treated Billboard’s Hot 100 as their playground lately. Each is a lock for a Best New Artist Grammy nomination next winter, because each is exactly the sort of not-too-innovative, chart-friendly act the Recording Academy routinely rewards.

For both acts, however, the path to the Top 10 has been a bit of a slog. GaGa’s on a roll now, but she spent most of 2008 watching her debut “Just Dance” creep up the Hot 100 before its January 2009 triumph; each of her chart-toppers needed an abnormally long time to scale the list. Her latest, “LoveGame,” has had the easiest rise of all, even as it peaked below the top slot.

Drake is poised to join GaGa as a debutante chart-topper with “Best I Ever Had” (No. 2), if he can get past the Black Eyed Peas. Compared with the Lady, the former Degrassi: The Next Generation cast member has had an easier time, exploding into the Top 10 with “Best” and the Lil Wayne-backed Young Money single “Every Girl.”

But even Drake has had bumps along the way—in particular, a week in which “Best” took a one-week, Estelle-like swoon thanks to a dispute over who was allowed to release his songs on iTunes. He’s more than recovered, but the mix-up and the song’s temporary plummet show how critical digital sales are to the Hot 100.

I don’t normally talk here about technology or digital rights, but in the wake of Amazon’s disastrous recall of two George Orwell e-books last week, it’s worth exploring what happened to Drake’s hit and what it means for chart tabulation and the songs we buy. More »

This Year’s VMAs To Be More Brit-Tastic Than Ever Before

Tue Jul 14 2009 by Maura

This year’s installment of the MTV Video Music Awards—the channel’s annual attempt to wheeze some life into its outdated identity as something that airs music-related programming—is set to air live from New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 13. In an effort to help people remember that last year’s telecast was “controversial,” the suits at MTV have decided to book the wild-haired British comedian Russell Brand as host once again, despite his getting in lukewarm water for mocking the Jonas Brothers’ devotion to premarital purity. Two performers have been announced: the omnipresent twangy teen Taylor Swift; and the beloved, bombastic British band Muse, who will perform the lead single from their forthcoming album The Resistance. Michael Jackson Gives Wal-Mart A Reason To Sell Music One More Time

Mon Jul 6 2009 by Maura

Thanks to the help of savvy merchandisers in Bentonville, Ark., Michael Jackson will rule the album-charts roost in the second week following his death. According to industry rag Hits Jackson’s essentials collection Number Ones sold some 225,000 copies last week at Wal-Mart outlets alone, propelling the compilation’s single-week sales total to somewhere above the 300,000 mark: More »

Thu Jul 2 2009 by Maura

As of this writing, there are 4,168 comments on the blog post announcing Kevin Jonas’ engagement to his longtime girlfriend Danielle Deleasa. (It was written by the parents of Kevin and his fellow Jonas Brothers Joe and Nick.) As you might expect, the reactions from the MySpace faithful that have come in since the news broke last night have been somewhat mixed! A sampling after the jump. More »

Chartwalker: Why Billboard Geeks Remain Fond of Michael Jackson

Fri Jun 26 2009 by admin

I’ll probably always remember where I was when I heard the news of Michael Jackson’s death, if only for the specificity of the circumstances: I was on a plane back from Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon when the news broke on my seatback TV. I’d boarded the plane planning to spend the bulk of my time writing this chart column, and I was all set to focus on the usual Billboard happenings. But that quickly went out the window.

Within minutes of turning on the news on my seatback monitor, an MSNBC newscaster began rattling off a list of Jackson’s many awards and achievements, some (“Best-Selling Album Worldwide”) more impressive than others (“Grammy for Shortform Video of the Year, 1988”).

This is a natural and understandable biographical thread for Jackson encomia to pursue: after the sordid details of his personal life are burned off, Jackson’s music-business achievements are enormous. That said, as you head into this weekend, you’re going to hear and read a lot of superlatives about Jackson’s body of work, and the sheer length of the list might obscure which sales statistics and career kudos really matter.

But let me be clear: I come to praise Jacko, not bury him. The fact is, even a quarter-century after Thriller’s last hit fell off the Hot 100, the Gloved One’s industry achievements are stunning. More important, Jackson is one of very few acts for whom chart achievements serve as a fairly accurate barometer for artistic and cultural impact. This is one case where the commentators’ assessments are correct: We won’t see his like again. More »
