“30 Rock” Brings Together A Few Voices That Care

211_nup_134455_0081Last night’s 30 Rock season finale closed out with a grand parody of one of those celebrity-studded benefit songs, a la “We’re Sending Our Love Down This Well” and “What’s Going On ‘01.” “Kidney Now!” saw Cyndi Lauper, Michael McDonald, Mary J. Blige, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, and a slew of other well/sorta-well-known musicians warbling in honor of Jack Donaghy’s dad (played by Alan Alda)’s nephorotic needs. There’s even a splashy mini-site with a karaoke version of the track to go along with it–although Clay Aiken fans are probably going to get a bit riled up, given that its list of participating celebrities somehow managed to exclude their hero, perhaps because of his alleged relation to Kenneth the Page. (Take heart, Claymates: Mike D got left off the list as well, and he doesn’t even have your insane completely devoted fanbase!) Clip after the jump. MORE »

Dark Of The Matinee: Let’s Predict The Oscar Nominees For Best Original Song

Nominations for the Academy Awards are announced tomorrow, and we can’t help but wonder what five tracks will be in the running for Best Original Song. It’s been an oddly good year for music in movies—relatively speaking, anyway—and while there’s no reason to have faith that the Academy will make anything other than a tacky choice for the winner, there might be some surprises in the nominations. The Golden Globes nominated songs from Wall-E, Gran Torino, Cadillac Records, Bolt, and The Wrestler, ultimately going with Bruce Springsteen’s song from the latter for the win. But maybe something else will sneak in? Something from High School Musical 3, perhaps? A list of the most intriguing contenders is after the jump. MORE »

I'd be happy to see Jenny Lewis get the Oscar that she so deeply deserved for "The Wizard."

RIAA Fires Its Detective Agency, But Don’t Think That Means You’re Off The Hook

The RIAA has informed the information-gathering company MediaSentry that it will no longer need its services for gathering evidence against people who share Norah Jones songs using outdated Internet protocols, a move that may be in line with the trade organization’s recent decision to stop filing mass lawsuits against people suspected of uploading files. In MediaSentry’s place, the organization has hired another company, the cutely named Danish antipiracy outfit DtecNet Software ApS, to hunt down those people who may be playing pirate in between bouts of wank mining. Will DtecNet work with the RIAA and internet service providers to track down and kill -9 the accounts of those people who may be unleashing discographies across the Internet? I’d say “maybe,” although there’s a bit of a catch—no one’s formally informed the ISPs that they’re supposed to be working as a team yet. MORE »

Wong Kar Wai Ladles Out A Few Blueberry-Stuffed Lullabyes

5087.jpgEd. note: It’s time for another installment of “VHS Or Beta?”, where Andy Beta looks at the music behind the movies–from preserved-by-Criterion classics to completely inane summer blockbusters. In this installment, he travels along America’s byways with Wong Kar Wai and his first English-language feature, My Blueberry Nights: MORE »

OK, I'm a Wong Kar Wai freak so I'll bite: It's just "Happy Together" and Kar Wai is his first name, not last. :P

Still, good to know that their is incidental music etc. on the disc. I still listen to the soundtracks for "Fallen Angels", "In the Mood For Love", and "2046" all the time.
