“Blender”’s Purr Seems A Bit Muted These Days

pds.jpgOnce again, we present Rock-Critically Correct, a feature in which the most recent issues of Rolling Stone, Blender, Vibe, and Spin are given a once-over by a writer who’s contributed to many of those magazines, as well as a few others! In this installment, he looks at the new issue of Blender: MORE »

@DavidWatts: He unmasked himself some months ago.

At the risk of sounding like a slobbering fan of the Anono-Prick, this was a more-excellent-than-usual column. The whole point of this enterprise, it seems to me, is to be totally meta and talk about magazine-industry backstories and how they produce the final Product; and this one ties a lot of info together with a nice little bow. (It's also useful to me personally, because I don't have the sources at the magazines that I used to, and so I'm more out of the loop lately.) Anyway, keep it up.

A Pemberton Counterpoint From The Fine People Of Live Nation

pemberton.jpgWhile this site previously reported that there were troubles at the inaugural Pemberton Festival this weekend, including dust storms, traffic issues, and horrific bathrooms, Live Nation would like you, and any of the company’s stockholders, to know that the British Columbian music festival was a “triumphant success,” and that they’ve still got it going on when it comes to putting on multi-day concerts. MORE »

With all due deference to the hivemindset that poo-pooes all that Live Nation touches, but: the comments accompanying the CBC article linked above sees the attendees (obvious shills for Live Nation _and_ predominantly Canadian (woot do they noo aboot music anyhoo!?!?), I know, but still...) have generally favorable memories of their experience, too.

The inaugural Pemberton Music Festival, which went down last weekend and featured headlining sets by Coldplay, Tom Petty, and Jay-Z, was not without its problems: dust clouds that caused much respiratory distress on days one and two; the threat of rain on day three; members of N.E.R.D. reportedly… MORE »

@Audif Jackson Winters III: That was teh moment the whole group ran out into traffic, where they lifted Pharrel's car over the traffic, onto the festival grounds and onto the Monster Energy Drink (or something) stage.

Coldplay Is Having A Decidedly Mixed Week

coldplaay.JPGSure, their single may be No. 1 on the digital charts and they might be planning to work with Anton Corbijn on its video, but Coldplay’s label-saving album leaking last week and the president of said label being shown the door have to weigh on Chris Martin and his bandmates. And now comes the news that the band’s tour has been delayed by at least two weeks, thanks to “production delays which mean the show simply won’t be ready” by its original June 29 kickoff date. (Perhaps the paint on the 50-foot reproduction of Viva La Vida’s cover art is taking a really long time to dry?) The free shows in London, Barcelona, and New York are still happening on their originally scheduled dates, but once again, the people of Philadelphia will get the shaft, as their tour-opening show has been pushed back until late July. The new itinerary, after the jump. MORE »

@brasstax:

Not at all. I can get into some mellow stuff - you know, Rod Stewart's American Songbook shit, Kenny G...In fact, I was just on the phone with Kenny G, and he was also saying that he wished the new Coldplay was a bit more exciting.

General Admission Tickets Are For Suckers

thehorrorofcrowds.jpgIf you’ve ever purchased tickets to one of the big summer festivals, I’m sure you’ve looked at the V.I.P. packages available and thought there’s no way they’re worth the generally insane prices. But for the readership of Forbes, they’re really the only option. MORE »

Perhaps the $2000 is the All Star Band Camp? That's not part of the VIP package. Actually, being at Rocklahoma is a bonus for shelling out the money for the Band Camp.

coldplay.jpgColdplay has announced North American tour dates for this summer and fall, as well as a pair of free shows–one at London’s Brixton Academy on June 16 and another at New York’s Madison Square Garden on June 23. The free-show impulse seems a little weird at first–at least until you remember that in those parts of the world, only the “little people” don’t wrangle themselves onto guest lists. Way to be egalitarian for those people living nearby and/or willing to travel, guys! Full list of shows after the jump. MORE »

Making a late-fall swing of arenas six months after the album came out can be dangerous... I remember getting half-price tickets for U2's PopMart tour in the fall of '97 the day of the show and sitting 30th row or so.
