Like the Timex Social Club, I spend a lot of time lamenting the rumors that surround me every day. How do they get started? And where do they get crazy? In Truthmonger, I’ll try to suss out the kernels of truth in the rumors that are taking up airspace in gossip columns, blogs, and our tips inbox.
THE RUMOR: So the real reason for the pushback of Mariah Carey’s Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel? It’s because she wanted to snub the Grammys! Wait, let me get the exact quote from the completely faulty New York Daily News item that started it all: “Mariah’s been shafted so many times before that [pushing the record back] like a big ‘Kiss my butt’ to the Grammy folks… She doesn’t need the awards, because her career is already so successful.”

Mariah Carey Asks Her Audience If They Know What Love Is, And If So, Can They Maybe Show Her Some?
Mariah Carey’s new mouthpiece Roger Friedman has confirmed yesterday’s rumor that the “real first single” from Mimi’s delay-plagued, yet still forthcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel will be a cover of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is.” (In case you missed it, the new line on the Eminem dis track “Obsessed” is that it was just a “summer trifle,” and not a real lead single from the album, despite it having an expensive video and it being called a single by Mariah’s camp. This couldn’t be because it hasn’t hit the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 in the five weeks that it’s been out, could it? Cough.) MORE »

Mariah Carey: The Spin Cycle Begins
So, Mariah Carey’s been getting bad press about her forthcoming, and already twice-delayed, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, and it’s starting to overshadow the record just a wee bit. How best to rescue the buzz from eating itself? Well, apparently Mariah’s people have decided to enlist factually challenged gossip Roger Friedman, who’s never afraid to cover his sleeves with PR-company-donated hearts, to help kickstart the latest phase of the Mimi spin cycle into action. Did you know that, contrary to every piece of press that accompanied its release, “Obsessed” is not the first single from Memoirs, and never was intended to be? I guess both those iterations of its Brett Ratner-directed video were just a really expensive vanity project! MORE »

Michael Jackson’s Funeral May Inspire Even More Circus-Related References Than You Would Expect
Recently relocated gossip Roger Friedman is reporting that AEG Live–the concert-promotion company that was going to put on Michael Jackson’s 50-show run at London’s O2 Arena–is planning to throw a funeral for Jackson this Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, a facility it also happens to own. How convenient! Except it’s not all that convenient for the people producing the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which is supposed to begin a mini-residency at the Staples Center the next day. MORE »
The Michael Jackson Concerts: They’re Really Happening (Or At Least Scheduled To Happen)
The announcement of Michael Jackson’s run of comeback concerts in London—which, sometimes-reliable Fox News gossip Roger Friedman claims, kicks off July 9—was pre-empted this morning in the London Underground, thanks to the poster at right, which shows a “Smooth Criminal”-era Jackson and directs visitors to a Web site, being posted at certain stations. “This Is It,” claims the poster, which to be honest seems kinda ominous, no?
