Lana Del Rey Performs Live At Amoeba Records, Los Angeles: Idolator Review

Wed Feb 8 2012 by Nicole Sia
Two hours before she took the stage in front of a fawning capacity crowd at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles Tuesday night (Feb. 7), reports confirmed that Lana Del Rey had in fact canceled her performance at Austin's South by Southwest Music Festival in March and postponed several more dates in Australia. It was but another crank from the round-the-clock meme-churning machine that is Del Rey, who at once attracts a blocks-long line of fans for an intimate in-store appearance and an avalanche of vitriol from critics. Earlier in the day, rumors that management had withdrawn plans for a 30-date tour following Del Rey's now infamous Saturday Night Live incident were denied by her PR team, but the situation only highlighted the fact that faith in the former indie "It" girl is waning.

Lana Del Rey was acutely aware of all this as she stepped on stage last night. Clad in blue jeans, white shirt, her hair curled in that bouncy '40s Hollywood style she's known to wear, the singer took the mic to an uproar of cheers. "I only sing for you," she told us. More »

ZZ Ward: Popping Up

Thu Feb 2 2012 by Becky Bain
Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey—Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.

Fusing soul, R&B and hip-hop into one delicious listening experience, ZZ Ward isn't your typical new singing starlet on the rise. The LA-based, Oregon-raised artist dropped her debut mixtape Eleven Roses last month, and the 8-track collection includes ZZ's incredibly raw vocals singing over samples from songs like Tyler, The Creator's "Yonkers", Childish Gambino’s “You Know Me,” and Wiz Khalifa/Curren$y’s “Rooftops." She namechecks David Bowie as one of her musical idols ("He was unconventional, but his music was still so emotional and powerful") but it's clear from the first note out of her mouth that the blues is where her heart is. Head below to discover just who this wild woman is. More »

Kelis Dishes On Her 2012 Album

Mon Dec 26 2011 by Idolator Staff
Kelis has been reasonably quiet in 2011, which is a shame, since her dance-tastic Flesh Tone was on of our pics for 2010's Best Albums. (Though she did brighten up Calvin Harris' wonderfully summery "Bounce.") Fortunately, it sounds like we'll be getting more Kelis in 2012 than we did this year, since the skeletal songbird revealed to AllSaints Basement Sessions that we'll be getting a new LP from her in the early part of the new year. Kelis is also featured in Hunger magazine's latest issue in new shots by Rankin. See the pics and watch the segment after the jump. More »
