To Do: Osunlade, Calexico, Or Hanukkah With Yo La Tengo

FROM GAWKER.COM:

· Just when you thought you'd seen it all, a Yoruban priest becomes a renowned producer and drops house beats worth braving the rain for. Osunlade does exactly that tonight at S.O.B.'s and you don't even need a batik shirt to get in. [flavorpill]
· Arizonian imports Calexico bring their eclectic, jazz-infused, not-really-definable rock to the Bowery Ballroom. [BB]

"Juno" Soundtrack Was Almost Devoted To Yo La Tengo

While the contents of the Juno soundtrack have probably made little difference to most Idolator readers' lives (unless you didn't know about the Moldy Peaches and, honest to blog, cried when you finally heard "Anybody Else But You"), there are at least three people who might be upgrading their furniture if director Jason Reitman had stuck with his original plans for the flick's musical motif. "We started to realize there was this rebirth of lo-fi music that had the same energy as punk music, but nowhere as angry. The first band we discovered was Yo La Tengo and so I started to think that was the sound of the film." Then Diablo Cody stormed in the room and went "blah blah I used to be a stripper and this isn't sticky edgy sweet enough blah blah listen to this song on my Oh My iPod (get it?) it's the biggity bomb!" Or rather Ellen Page downloaded "Anybody Else But You" for Reitman when he asked her what Juno would listen to. But it's fun to pretend. More »

To Do: Yo La Tengo, Sesame Street, Surfing L.A.

FROM DEFAMER.COM:

· Monday night music round-up: Wheatus at Safari Sam's; D.O.A. at the Knitting Factory; Yo La Tengo at the Henry Fonda.
· The Museum of Television and Radio hosts the L.A. Premiere of The World According to Sesame Street, a doc about the challenges of bringing the Muppets to countries where children have problems a little more profound than getting fat from eating too much junk food.
· Yeah, it's another way to sit on your ass and be entertained, but ALOUD at Central Library is screening Surfing L.A., an "improvisational documentary" about the "psychology of Los Angeles," that may at least make you feel like you've gone somewhere in search of diversion.

Famed Met Ed Kranepool sits down with Ira Kaplan to discuss the genesis of Yo La Tengo's name in what I am very fervently hoping is the first of many baseball-centric "Kaplan's Korner" segments to be streamed from yolatengo.com, especially since I'm more than a touch worried that I'm not going to have much else to cheer about, Mets-wise, this coming season. (Sigh.) (Also: In keeping with our Internet digging for old TV, I just spent the last half hour looking for Kiner's Korner clips on YouTube and Google Video, only to come up empty-handed. Boooooo!) To Do: Musical Blogs, Yo La Tengo, Kaiser Chiefs

FROM GAWKER.COM:

· There's another tsunami on the way and the kiddos in Darfur keep on dying, but Tonic has recouped 90% of the money they need to stay afloat. Yay! Yo La Tengo perform tonight to help 'em make that last push. [Tonic]
· In case you missed 'em last week, What's Up NYC tells us that newest British "it" band, the Kaiser Chiefs, perform at the Spin magazine office tonight at 6:30. They also tell us that RSVP-ing is necessary. They do not, however, tell us where to send said RSVP. We're sure you'll find a way around this problem. [WUNY]

Chloë Sevigny: Sonic Youth's Ice Princess

FROM GAWKER.COM:

Big Love (and other, weirder stuff) actress Chloë Sevigny was spotted over the weekend jamming out at a Sonic Youth concert with Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan. Some disapproving, fellow VIP section member sent us a sighting complete with name-calling and ass-bashing. And yet, whole worlds away, a mysterious would be Romeo posted a similar sighting on Craigslist, hoping for the bobo queen to give him a call. What different passions you stoke, Chloë. Read from the Sevigny files after the jump.

After A Brief, Yet Too-Long Hiatus, Veronica Mars Is Ready To "Rally"

Now that we're past the CW's foray into the shallow end of the musical pool, our Tuesday nights can (at least for now) be full of the fine program Veronica Mars, and its Mark McGrath-free song selections. Last night's episode—during which our heroine was both sassier and classier than any of those wannabe Dolls—not only came up with a cute "alternate name" for Yo La Tengo, its triangle-cliffhanger closing scene was scored with Phoenix's longingly knotty "Rally," which only added to the tension (seriously, we've been trying to avoid checking SpoilerFix.com since the credits rolled): More »

To Do: Phair, Wedrock, Wallace

FROM DEFAMER.COM:

· We know that we descend into reflexive adolescent depravity every time Liz Phair visits town (she's at the House of Blues on Sunset tonight), but she was an integral part of the autoerotic development of many indie rock nerds of a certain-age. Elsewhere: Broken Social Scene at the Henry Fonda; Dean Ween plays with side project Moistboys at the Troubadour.

· Writers Bloc presents 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace in conversation with Judy Muller of ABC News at the Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills. No matter how hard we wish for it, they never seem to dress the speakers in inflatable sumo costumes and force them to grapple on stage.

freudenschade

FROM GAWKER.COM:

Due to the strike that has gripped the nation by its creative balls, the cast of Saturday Night Live performed this week's show, with musical guest Yo La Tengo and host Michael Cera, in the moldy basement theater of Upright Citizen's Brigade. Not many people knew about it and fewer people actually got in. Maybe you read about it in the Times and felt bad about you weren't there. Don't worry. HuffPo's Rachel Sklar penned a 4511 word recap of the evening. (4511 fucking words. Recap.) Included in her accounting of every single sketch: "Man, did the crowd go nuts;" "Darrell Hammond, master impressionist: He really is." and " One hell of a show." Repeat this like 225 times. Los Planetas Sneak Into Your Galaxy

I've been in Spain a little over a week now and already I've talked to some drunk Madrileños in a bar about Nick Cave and pestered a local for recommendations. She gave me a list of Spanish bands, and so far my favorite is Los Planetas, a stoner pop band in the vein of Yo La Tengo who've been around since the mid-'90s. Last night during a stint of Idolator Pop '07 data entry I happily listened to the songs on their MySpace page several times through, soaking up the '90s college radio aesthetic. More »

To Do: Prada Sample Sale and Jim McGreevey

FROM GAWKER.COM:

1. Quick!! Registration starts now for the Prada Sample Sale? Whaa? Indeed, according to the site: You must have an appointment to shop at the Prada Sample Sale. Each individual attending the sale must have an appointment. To re-schedule an appointment, the original appointment must first be cancelled and then a new appointment day and time selected. I love it when the jokes write themselves — more time for me to watch the interns make me martinis.
2. It s a good thing we have all these hipster concerts for Kerry, because I was just watching CNN (accidentally, of course), and some dude totally said that white, urban, 20-somethings are, like, the key swing demographic in the upcoming election. In any case, Yo La Tengo, the French Kicks, Lewis Black, Jonathan Ames, and others perform tonight at Spirit on West 27th for some good old fashioned Bush Bashing.
3. Dead Prez gets all political and shit at a free show at Marcus Garvey Park tonight.
4.Suddenly ex-New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey — finally, someone from Jersey that I'd totally do.

Hipsters Have Doomed Us All

FROM GAWKER.COM:

Sofia Coppola slouches in a red damask banquette so battered and torn it's practically held together by duct tape. She twists the end of her "Go Metric" t-shirt around her forefinger, staring blankly into the middle distance. Finally, as the flash of yet another polaroid camera goes off and Yo La Tengo's "Deeper Into Movies" comes on the iPod at the long abandoned DJ station, she looks pleadingly into my face and she says, "I never wanted this to happen." Hey, so did you read the one in Adbusters about how hipsters spell the end of Western civilization? Scummy pints of cloudy beer, V-necks, kaffiyehs, and fixed-gear bicycles (no cheese doodle baskets at Bushwick Country Club?), all lamented in earnest New Journalese and questionable pronoun-antecedent agreement. And in what was once an eminently read hipster lifestyle handbook. TNR apologized for the war; this was inevitable, too.

My Bloody Valentine To Tote Their Distortion Pedals Around North America This Fall

This Year's College-Campus Band Of Choice Will Make You Step Out On A Ledge

According to our most recent reader survey, more than four percent of our readers attended college, meaning that a few of you are familiar with the end-of-the-school-year ritual known as the spring concert (or, as it's more commonly know, Bongs-n-Songs). Lollapalooza Lineup Leaked: Finally, Pearl Jam And Mickey Avalon Will Share A Stage

Live Music Blog has the alleged lineup for Lollapalooza (as does The A.V. Also: Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem will be on the bill together, which should make for at least one blogworthy interaction. More »

Another Long Weekend Brings Another Long List-Making Exercise

Over the Independence Day weekend, I challenged you guys to pick one favorite album for each year that you've been alive, and you all certainly rose to the occasion. So I figured I'd give it another go—only this time, with songs instead of full-lengths. Obviously, picking a "favorite" song from each year would take longer than a three-day weekend, and possibly drive you utterly mad in the process. So let's do it this way: Craft a mix CD that contains one track representing each year of your life, in order. This way, you can transfer any fretting you might have about whether or not "Last Child" or "Beth" should be your representative for 1976 to whether or not 1990's outro transitions well into 1991's intro. Don't get me wrong, it's still difficult, but at least it won't send you on a holiday trip to the sanitarium, where you'll only have the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon to accompany your murmurings about whether "White Belly" is superior to "Rid Of Me." My stab at it, after the jump. More »

"Entertainment Weekly" Makes A Grab For Those Indie Rock Pageviews

Well-versed in the knowledge that nothing gets people clicking around Web sites like a photo gallery, nothing gets people arguing on the Internet like a slightly specious list, and no demographic has more work-hours time to click on said photo galleries and argue over said lists than the knowledge workers who proclaim themselves lovers of the nebulously defined genre "indie rock," Entertainment Weekly has put together a photo gallery/list called "The Indie Rock 25," which assigns one album to each of the 25 years since 1984, a year that was apparently defined by the Replacements' Let It Be. There are some arbitrary rules (no solo acts, albums that came out on an indie overseas but a major in the U.S. are OK), some arbitrary picks (see: Bright Eyes in 2005), lots of white dudes (cf. 1993: Ultimate Alternative Wavers over Pussy Whipped? Really?), and an obligatory mention of Radiohead, whose stature in "indie" probably wouldn't exist were it not for the major-label machine of 15 years ago but I'll probably be stuck arguing that until I'm blue in the face. Full list after the jump. More »

No, Wait, This Is The Music Equivalent Of Fantasy Baseball

The folks at the LimeWire Blog have come up with a method for reviewing albums called "indie rock baseball," in which you take a record and, starting off with two outs and no one on base, subsequently review said album based on how clutch it is—namely, if it can score a run before it strikes out with three skippable tracks. The rules follow: More »

Clip By Clip: Idolator's Favorite YouTube Fan Videos

What do you get when you combine obsessive superfans, the ever-slippery concept of "fair use," and way too much free time? The YouTube search-clogging phenomenon known as the fanvid. Juxtaposing movie and TV scenes with popular songs, these clips are filled with literal translations of lyrics, out-of-context romantic scenes, and on-screen bugs. But there's a certain charm in their creators' dedication; we can't imagine how many times people have watched, say, the entire Office oeuvre in order to get the perfect shot of Pam and Jim making googly eyes at each other.
