FRIDAY VIDEO TIME: The Highly Subjective Totally Debatable List Of The Best Songs That Start With The Letter “F”
Welcome back to our weekly series where we highlight the top songs over the last 50 years that start with a specific letter of the alphabet. This week, we move on to the letter "F". This playlist includes some songs about "freedom" and another hit about "feelin'", but if you think we're making any stops at Funkytown or taking requests for "Free Bird", you'll have to find some other alphabetical musical list. Don’t forget we’ll be doing the letter “G” next Friday. So if there’s a song you think deserves a slot, give us a shout.
Jump below to see the best "F" songs over the last 50 years.

Open “What I’ve Been Listening To Lately” Thread
Haven’t done one of these in a while, and I figure the night that I’m about to run out to the R. Kelly show in New York (yessss) is as good a time as any to do so. Also, I am currently in something of a (relative) listening rut, alternating between the Shakira record, my “2009 awesomeness” playlist (now at 32 songs! new additions include Alphabeat and Natalie Imbruglia!), and isolated listens to the new songs/albums that cross my transom. And not much else! So, feel free to plug your favorite music of right now here—there’s no limit on how old or new it is, obviously, More »
Alphabeat And Ramones Say The Word (It’s “Blitzkrieg”)
Alphabeat’s “Fascination” mashed up with Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.” Not earth-shattering or anything, but definitely a nice little kick in the pants for a Thursday morning. [YouTube via Alphabeat's Twitter] More »
Dear Alphabeat: I Love You. Never Change. (Well, Don’t Change In A Bad Way.)
There is nothing at all that is revolutionary about the Danish pop collective Alphabeat’s video for “The Spell”—they’re basically playing on a disco ball, with Stine Bramsen looking resplendent and adorable while vamping to the song’s lyrics. But man, that song! It has grown into one of my favorite pop tunes of the year, a bubbly first-crush anthem that’s propelled by a keyboard line that’s half-“Step On,” half-outro to “Good Vibrations.” (I guess that’s what they meant by it having a ’90s influence!) Every time I hear it I want to turn into a whirling dervish, and the only thing that’s bad about that is that sometimes I want to jam out to this song in small enclosed spaces like planes and/or trains. Clip after the jump. More »
Alphabeat Pop Up On The Radio
A public service announcement to those of you who felt scarred by the 3OH!3/Katy Perry atrocity in the previous post: The new single by Danish popsters Alphabeat premiered on Radio 1 earlier today, and while I have yet to find an embeddable stream of the radio rip, Mediafire links are “out there.” (Although as expected for the August premiere of a single that isn’t out until October, said streams are getting pulled down pretty quickly.) The song’s a fun little bit of retro-pastiche called “The Spell”; by some chance of iTunes coincidence my first spin of it segued into Jody Watley’s “Don’t You Want Me,” and it sounded perfect. Needless to say that’s an endorsement from these quarters! (Popjustice has a snippet here.) [MySpace; thanks Candice!] More »

Nine Reasons That Pop Music Might Get Better This Year (No, Really!)
As 2008 recedes in our collective rearview mirror, the headlines trumpeting bad news are still there: record sales are lousier than ever, the economy sucks, record executives are still trying to flog the Pussycat Dolls. But there are still reasons to be excited by what’s to come in the probably contracting, definitely shapeshifting world of pop music. Nine things to look forward to today and in the 364 days that follow after the jump!
