In 2004, Annie—Bergen, Norway’s sunniest export—scored both club hits and indie cred with her debut album Anniemal. Her sophomore LP Don’t Stop was initially announced in early 2008, but got tangled up, as she explains it, in a nasty case of record label drama. “I kept on delivering things but it was never enough,” says the singer.
Fast forward a year-and-a-half later, and Don’t Stop has finally arrived on these shores, thanks to Oslo-based label Smalltown Supersound. Idolator met up with 31-year-old Annie (real name: Anne Lilia Berge Strand) in Los Angeles on the eve of her album’s release to discuss her upcoming American DJ gigs and how she eventually got the spectacularly upbeat Don’t Stop into her fans’ hands. Popping in on this Labor Day to say that if you missed me chatting with National Public Radio’s Guy Raz yesterday about five albums to look forward to this fall—including this Friday’s release of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, as well as albums by Miranda Lambert, Annie, the Roots, and Hope Sandoval—you can hit up NPR’s Web site to hear it. And feel free to tell me what you thought I forgot! Time constraints, you know. [NPR] More »

Oh man, it’s almost Labor Day weekend! Which means barbecues, earlier sunsets, and the close of summer in the American mind-set. (Not to mention the ever-closer encroachment of the Video Music Awards! Ack!) So what better time to look back? Feel free to share your favorite musical experiences of the Memorial-To-Labor-Day period in this space, while you are (I hope!) waiting to go outside and enjoy the last crackles of summer. My list—which ranges from shows to finding out bits of news—after the jump. More »

And its new cover is incredible. The long-in-turnaround Don’t Stop, out for real this time on Nov. 17 via the Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound, won’t include any of the songs from the “Annie / Anthonio / love child” saga that the Scandinavian singer unfolded this year, but that’s OK. Mainly because there are going to be a few tracks that weren’t on the version of Don’t Stop that leaked in the summer of ‘08, as well as a collaboration with Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos. The track listing— and for good measure, Annie’s “Anthonio” video and the reply by “Anthonio”—after the jump. More »

As promised: The state of my “2009 awesomeness” playlist, in which I collect the songs that catch my ear as the year progresses in order to not make my best-of list a last-minute-of-December clusterfuck sort of thing. (It inevitably winds up being like that, but you know, I have noble intentions.) It’s after the jump, and has some contextual links added in. Feel free to make your own and share it here! More »

Last month, Norwegian pop singer Annie released “Anthonio,” an icy comeback single about a cad who had left her pregnant with his child. Shortly after the song came out, a MySpace user going by the name “Anthonio” started leaving remorseful messages on Annie’s MySpace page; judging by her public responses to his notes, she was not pleased–and neither were friends of hers like Sally Shapiro–with his after-the-fact attempts to apologize for leaving her with a kid. So he decided to clear his name the only way he knew how–through song: More »

Norwegian pop singer Annie broke up with Island Records before Christmas, and she won the rights to her long-in-limbo second album Don’t Stop in the settlement. She’ll put a reworked version of that record out herself sometime in the near future, and the chilly lament “My Anthonio” is the first new track to surface from it; it’s a glittering, accusatory track about a one-night stand that had some unintended consequences. Two other cuts from the Don’t Stop sessions—including her version of Stacey Q’s “Two Of Hearts”—after the jump.
