"Fashion Rocks" Cover Reveals Pop Music's Preservation In Amber

The cover for Conde Nast's annual Fashion Rocks supplement has been revealed, and its tacit admission that few of the people who will have multiple copies of the thing cluttering up their houses have been paying attention to pop music much is, at the very least, impressive in its brazenness: People haven't really paid attention to music over the past two years, it seems to be saying, so why not just serve up the alternate cover we were going to run before Jennifer Lopez muscled her way onto Page One last year? Well played. And budget-conscious, too! (The asterisk next to the Kills' coverline is probably my favorite part of the whole thing. "Wait, before you run away, here's a celebrity-related reason to care about this band!") [E!]

Malcolm McLaren To Unite Captain, Tennille, And Curtis In Times Square

The New York Daily News' item on Malcolm McLaren's current art installation on the MTV building focuses on its porny aspects: "What you see is not people having sex but people about to have it.... I was interested in the body language of nonactors, how they communicated their longing," McLaren tells the News' Rush and/or Molloy of his piece, which uses clips culled from stag movies of days gone by. But of interest to me is the music accompanying it, which passerby can hear if they call a phone number running across the screen: McLaren is scoring the film with his stunning blend of the Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which I first heard when Peter Hook spun it at an otherwise awful afterparty* for a New Order show a few years back and which is still spine-chilling to listen to. A stream of the track is after the jump. More »

Snoop Dogg: A Child Of God (But Not The Child Of God, I Think)

I guess this ad for the Catholic Church's World Youth Day, which ran in the Australian edition of Marie Claire, is both an attempt to remind the children that Jesus was the biggest influence on all the good music in the world and show them that just one trip to their local confessional will wipe away any number of sins—even those involving deadly weapons!—and get one started on the path toward righteousness, stained-glass window depictions, et cetera.
