The Make Your Own Killers Cover Art Contest Comes To A Close

Last week, given the recent similarities between Killers album/single covers, we posited that the Killers' art team was just using Photoshop's Stained Glass filter on some pre-existing images to make them. Of course, we were wrong, as was pointed out to us a number of times (it's actually the work of Paul Normansell). These factual inaccuracies didn't stop us from forging ahead with our The Make Your Own Killers Cover Art Contest, wherein intrepid graphical warriors used a Killers logo, the Stained Glass filter, and their imaginations to craft Killers record covers that could fool the band themselves*! Our favorites, including the winner, after the jump. More »

Our "Make Your Own Killers Cover Art" contest rages on through next Thursday, so if you have time over the weekend and a rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop, you should give it a go and enter! Also, just so you know what you'll be up against, the first entry we received used a picture of me as its backdrop. Yes, really. [Details]

Idolator Presents: The Make Your Own Killers Cover Art Contest!

Maura and I noticed a certain... consistency in The Killers' artwork for their recent single and forthcoming album. As you can see above, it looks they're going for the "Stained Glass Effect in Photoshop on some random image" motif. So I challenged Maura to make one of her own, and, sure enough, in about ten minutes, she came back with this bad boy: More »

Malcolm McLaren To Unite Captain, Tennille, And Curtis In Times Square

The New York Daily News' item on Malcolm McLaren's current art installation on the MTV building focuses on its porny aspects: "What you see is not people having sex but people about to have it.... I was interested in the body language of nonactors, how they communicated their longing," McLaren tells the News' Rush and/or Molloy of his piece, which uses clips culled from stag movies of days gone by. But of interest to me is the music accompanying it, which passerby can hear if they call a phone number running across the screen: McLaren is scoring the film with his stunning blend of the Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which I first heard when Peter Hook spun it at an otherwise awful afterparty* for a New Order show a few years back and which is still spine-chilling to listen to. A stream of the track is after the jump. More »

Stranger Writer Designs Album Cover That Will Change The Way You Consume Music For Album That Has Changed The Way You Consume Music

Hey everybody who was complaining about the lack of digitized cover art with your In Rainbows download: Stranger writer/future Peter Saville Sam Machkovech has got you covered with a sleeve that almost shouts, "Oh no, they're after me MP3s!" Machkovech says that being "a revolutionary figure in the world of digital album........art, I'm making this jpg available in a 'pay what you want' format." Is there anything the pouty Thom Yorke face can't improve?

Pop Goes the Gallery: New York's Postmasters Take on Video

Art galleries and pop music may not always be natural bedfellows, but their pairing has been known to set off sparks. Our friend Kate Silver's recent description of a Postmasters show in New York sounds like it could do just that: "Saw a great show spoofing music videos and karaoke. My favorite piece is called '25 Concrete Examples of Why John Cage is Not Our Father'—set to 'Fox on the Run.'" If you go, try not to sing too loud.
