Kanye West’s awe-inspiring, history-making performances of “Power” and “Runaway” this past weekend on Saturday Night Live were so glorious, we almost forgot this gem of a sketch—new cast member Vanessa Bayer performed a spot-on impression of Miley Cyrus during The Miley Cyrus Show, with proud papa Billy Ray Cyrus (played by host Bryan Cranston) filling the band leader/sidekick role. No joke, we might actually watch this show, if only for the unintentional comedy resulting from Miley’s guests being slightly freaked out during the entire interview.

What did you think of Bayer’s impression of Miley? We think she hit all the right notes of being unfailingly sunny and cheerful and five decimals louder than everyone else around her. Pretty cool!

When Miley Cyrus’ “lap dance” for producer Adam Shankman at The Last Song wrap party hit the Internet earlier this week, the jaws of Miley fans across the globe hit the floor. Miley’s parents, Billy Ray and Leticia, weren’t at the event to step in, and the family could not be reached for comment. So we decided to make up our own. Flip through to see just what the Cyruses have to say about Miley’s untamed lap dance.

Amid all the American Idol hubbub, it’s easy to forget that anything else went on in the pop world today. While we were munching on popcorn and eagerly counting down the minutes to 8pm, these pop stars were out at parties, award shows, and just trying to get through the airport. Take a spin through the world (outside of Idol) of music today.

Billy Ray Cyrus, Charlie Daniels, recent government appointee Lee Greenwood, Michael W. Smith, and uh Oliver North are going to embark on a right-wing Lollapalooza next summer, when Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concerts ’09 take place at various locales around America. In an effort to maximize value for people who might want to see all of these men at the same time, buying a ticket doesn’t just get you a chance to hear “Achy Breaky Heart” retrofitted for a politicized audience; it also gives you a chance to collect items like boxes and mugs, although despite the promise of gifts something about this whole enterprise leads me to believe that Miley Cyrus will be a late “get as many asses into seats as possible” addition to at least one date. Maybe it’s the prospect of Oliver North singing? Or the number of times any human being, even the most red-blooded, will stand sitting through “God Bless The USA” within the space of one evening? Nashville Star‘s sixth season premiered last night on NBC, which brought one question to mind: Six seasons? Really? And another: Should I be watching this debacle?

Well, the show did uncover Miranda Lambert, one of the few reality-show-derived musicians who’s managed to release an album I enjoy listening to in its entirety. On the other hand, she did come in third to Buddy Jewell, who hasn’t made much of the opportunity, possibly because he’s not very talented and somewhat boring.

The show itself seems vaguely promising, with solo artists facing duos and trios while judged by a megalomaniac with some credibility (John Rich), a pop star who has the country credibility of once living in her car (Jewel), and a guy I’ve never heard of whose name sounds remarkably porn-starish (Jeffrey Steele). As a detraction, the increasingly creepy Billy Ray Cyrus is the host, and I’m not sure I can take an hour of that guy each week, especially if he’s visiting aircraft carriers. And song selection is dubious: Someone apparently chose “Drops Of Jupiter” as their song this week, which is odd because Train wasn’t really much of a country band, and really, not much of a band at all.

Reruns will air incessantly on CMT, so maybe I’ll catch one. Somehow I think I’m going to regret that decision.

Last night’s CMT Music Awards–the country-music television network’s version of its sister network MTV’s Video Music Awards–veered into “a little more than slightly excruciating” territory when co-host Miley Cyrus tripped her way through a Taylor Swift intro in which she talked about texting the glittery-guitar-hoisting country protege incessantly, an endless setup to what would be one of many “ha ha, Dad, I’m paying your bills!” zingers that the Hannah Montana star sent in the direction of her father/svengali, “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy Ray Cyrus. (Yes, he performed the line dance that sent him and his mullet to stardom back in 1992, the same year his cash cow was sired.) The opening skit, in which Trace Adkins and his really greasy mop tried currying favor with everyone from Donald Trump to the three remaining Presidential candidates in order to get passes to the show, also mined that route; its final punchline was that Billy Ray was making extra scratch by scalping tickets, which were of course hot properties because of his daughter’s presence. That girl is going to be so messed up in three years. Personally, I can’t wait for Billy Ray to open the show descending from the ceiling, Fartman-style, and giving everyone in attendance who wrote him off after “Achy Breaky Heart” the double-barrelled finger salute upon his landing. This Billboard notice about “crooner-turned-actor” Billy Ray Cyrus’ new project–one of those kinda days–did make me wonder why the guy needs to star in a straight-to-video flick about a bait shop when he should be chilling at home taking a Scrooge McDuck paddle through his daughter’s earnings. Pride? Boredom? Serious belief in the unrecognized talent of the guy who directed Delta Farce? [Billboard]

If you’re worried about where your next Hannah Montana fix will come from, fear not! 20/20 has got you covered tonight at 9, when the two most famous Cyruses sit down with Deborah Roberts to discuss “Hannah Montana, Hollywood Bad Girls and More.” The “and More” likely refers to the calculation of the precise moment at which Miley Cyrus becomes disillusioned with the Disney Channel and starts dating a member of Panic! At the Disco out of spite. Or maybe it just means Billy Ray’s new single, “Ready, Set, Don’t Go,” a wistful, ambivalent tribute to his daughter’s freakish rise to stardom:

In the grand scheme of things, the song is actually not terrible–it’s at least a notch above Nickelback. But the lyrics are kind of unnerving:

Miley is, what, fourteen? Maybe you should be in the car with her, Billy. She can’t even drive a real one yet, let alone a metaphorical fame-mobile. Also, many young teens who have the stars in their eyes are forced to attend school and go to pool parties. In our society, eighteen is traditionally considered to be the age at which we reach adulthood, or the “startin’ line,” as you put it. Maybe you were confused about this? Are you clear now? Seriously, put the guitar down and rescue your daughter from the Disney Channel compound immediately. And then, please shave your soul patch.
