Jammie Thomas-Rasset, the Minnesota resident whose legal tussle with the RIAA has resulted in some hyperbolic news outlets throwing around Joan Of Arc comparisons (oy), has been found guilty of pirating music by a Federal jury and ordered to pay the Recording Industry Association of America $1.92 million–$80,000 for each one of the 24 not-very-good songs that the music-industry lobbying group wanted to nail her for stealing via KaZAA. (Fun fact: That amount of money could buy about 101,000 full-price CDs, before taxes.) In a cruel irony, the money she’ll have to pay is eight times the amount she would have had to shell out had she not decided to appeal the guilty verdict brought against her in October 2007. MORE »

“Blender,” R.I.P.
Alpha Media has shuttered its music magazine Blender, according to Ad Age. Ad pages for the musically omnivorous, list-happy mag had gone down some 57% between January and April of this year, one that’s proven rough going for glossies of all stripes. Blender editor Joe Levy—who came to the mag from Rolling Stone a little more than a year ago—will move over to Alpha’s lone remaining title, Maxim, where he’ll become editor. (Disclaimer: I wrote a few record reviews for Blender long ago.) UPDATE: Press release announcing the changes at Alpha—including Levy’s job-switch and the news that Blender.com will “continue as a digital destination”—after the jump. [Ad Age] MORE »

Nas Relents, Changes Album Title To “Nas”
For the second release in a row, Nas has been forced to abandon his dream of releasing a CD named N—–. Last time he caved to pressure, he was able to think up a different controversial gimmick, but instead of naming his upcoming album The Obama Of Rap or Anal Fixation, he’s gone with Nas, simply Nas. While there had been talk of further pressure from his label, it’s surprising that such a change would be pushed for well into the pre-release hype cycle. Maybe once his Def Jam contract ends, Nas can release digital downloads with all the controversial file names he can think of. MORE »
