The Song Price Remains The Same As discussed earlier, the Copyright Royalty Board met today to discuss raising the royalty rates given to music publishers for digital sales. The result? They did nothing! They froze the royalty rate for music publishers at 9.1 cents per download. iTunes ain't gonna close down. Prices aren't going up. Nothing to see here. Move along now. [CNET]

BREAKING: Kanye West Arrested At LAX

For "felony vandalism," which is actually code for "shaking down a couple of annoying paparazzi who were bothering him while he was at Los Angeles International Airport." (One of the paps was from TMZ, which has "helpfully" provided a chat room for its readers to react to this unfolding story. Sample comment: "kanye looks like urkle." Sample comment from someone who goes by the name "TMZ_admin": "Kanye for Pez... tilt his head back and take a candy." Oh, Internet age, do you ever stop giving?) [TMZ]

Nas Relents, Changes Album Title To "Nas"

For the second release in a row, Nas has been forced to abandon his dream of releasing a CD named N—-—. Last time he caved to pressure, he was able to think up a different controversial gimmick, but instead of naming his upcoming album The Obama Of Rap or Anal Fixation, he's gone with Nas, simply Nas. While there had been talk of further pressure from his label, it's surprising that such a change would be pushed for well into the pre-release hype cycle. Maybe once his Def Jam contract ends, Nas can release digital downloads with all the controversial file names he can think of. More »

"In response to an nearly unprecedented outpouring of concern from the Chicago music community, Ald. Eugene Schulter, chairman of the City Council License Committee, has decided that he will not present the so-called 'event promoter's ordinance' to the full council on Wednesday for a vote as scheduled—and that the committee will go back to work on fine-tuning the law." Mariah'd Bliss

Mariah Carey and former Nickelodeon star Nick Cannon—shown here in 2005, back when Nick was still playing to the green slime crowd—have tied the knot, according to reports. (Guess she didn't mind getting a slightly used engagement ring.) I'm hoping that this means I'll soon be heading to my local multiplex to see a Drumline 2, only it's also going to bring all the characters from Glitter (especially the disappearing cat!) into its world, have an awkward unplanned pregnancy "B" storyline, and end with a marching-band performance of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On." Live Nation Apparently Willing To Throw Lots Of Cash Jay-Z's Way

The New York Times is reporting that Jay-Z and Live Nation are on the verge of agreeing to a $150 million deal that will cover his recordings and tours for the next 10 years, as well as financing for his own venture, which will allegedly be called the Carter Music Group. Once the deal is finalized, Jay will become Live Nation's most highly paid artist, a title that is currently held by Madonna, whose deal with the concert conglomerate comes in at a now-measly-looking $120 million. Earlier rumors claimed that Jay was looking for at least $100 million for the Carter Music Group, with naysayers saying that his pocketing that much money was a impossiblity because "it isn't the '90s anymore." Anyone want to check the calendars in Live Nation's offices? [NYT / Photo: AP]

T.I. Expected To Plead Guilty In Weapons Case

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that T.I. is expected to file a guilty plea today in response to multiple Federal weapons charges against him, and that he "faces certain prison time" as a result. T.I.—born Clifford Harris—has been under house arrest since October, when he was arrested in a weapons sting. The plea is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, with his sentencing scheduled for a later date; the Associated Press' sources are claiming that his sentence will involve 1,500 hours of community service—during which he'll speak to youth groups around the country "about the pitfalls of guns, gangs and drugs"—and 12 months in the federal pokey, which could be shortened if he's on good behavior. Tonight's Van Halen Show: It's Off (But It May Be Rescheduled?)

From the slow-as-molasses site for the American Airlines Center, where tonight's Van Halen show was supposed to take place: "The Van Halen concert scheduled for tonight has been postponed. An official press release announcing the rescheduled date will be forthcoming as soon as possible." Ticketmaster's site is also saying that "tickets are not currently available online," but the site is still selling tickets for Wednesday night's VH show in Cincinnati, which will no doubt fuel even more speculation from the folks on the Van Halen fan boards. Artists Sue Universal Music Group For Unpaid Royalties

A group of recording artists that includes the estates of Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughn, and Count Basie sued Universal Music Group earlier today, saying that they had been cheated out of more than $6 million in royalties over the past 10 years, citing royalty statements between May 1999 and February 2007 that they claim contained inaccuracies. Most of the artists in the lawsuit were on labels that had been gobbled up by Universal during its climb to being the largest recorded-music entity on the planet; Universal issued a statement saying that they believe the claims outlined in the lawsuit are "baseless." Amy Winehouse Granted Visa, Still Not Coming To The States For Grammys

Now the word is that Amy Winehouse has been granted a visa by the U.S. Government—but she won't be making the trip to Los Angeles for Sunday's Grammy Awards, probably because having to fly halfway around the world 48 hours prior to a big performance won't exactly make her already-rock-solid stage presence all that much better. Her rep does note, however, that she "will still be performing via satellite broadcast from London as previously announced this morning," so those trainwreck-expectant execs will still have something to pin their ratings hopes on. Vineland Music Festival Scrapped

Those of you who enjoy sweating out in fields and paying lots of money for bottled water might want to pour a $5 Aquafina out for the first festival to bite the dust in 2008: The Vineland Music Festival, which was set to bring bands to Vineland, N.J. between Aug. 8 and 10. A rep for festival promoters C3 Presents confirmed to The Daily Journal that the South Jersey festival will be scrapped. Reasons for cancellation include All Points West, the not-Coachella festival that promoters AEG Live and Goldenvoice are planning to hold in Jersey City that weekend, as well as "several large amphitheater shows in Philadelphia and Camden (N.J.) scheduled for that same week." Community opposition to the festival probably didn't help matters much, either. Organizers are planning to reschedule the festival for summer 2009, although as you might guess, I'm kinda skeptical that it'll come off. [The Daily Journal]

Pirates Everywhere Pour Out A Little For OiNK

Oh snap! Looks like all those "serious music aficionados" will have to argue about bitrates somewhere else now, because the combined might of British and Dutch law enforcement has shut down OiNK, the invite-only file-trading hub that had become the P2P-era equivalent of a Little Rascals treehouse fort with a sign that read "No 128KBps Allowed." Mistrial Declared In Phil Spector Case

MySpace threat victim Larry Paul Fidler, the presiding judge in the Phil Spector murder trial, has declared a mistrial in the case after jurors said for a second time that they were unable to render a verdict. The jury was, according to MSNBC, split 10-2 on the charge of second-degree murder, although it's unknown whether or not the majority of jurors were in favor of conviction or acquittal.
