Annie Tosses Island Records Aside, Like It's Yesterday's Gum

After seeing her album Don't Stop put into endless turnaround despite it leaking over the summer, the Norwegian retro-popper Annie has announced that she's leaving Island Records: "I think it's a great label, but I never felt they were that positive to my ideas...so we decided that we're not gonna work together anymore. After Nick Gatfield, who was the head of Island left the label...a couple of months after I signed, things changed. I'm an artist with lots of ideas, plans...so I'm gonna do things my own way from now on." The first order of business under "her own way" is putting out a single on knob-twiddler Richard X's label. hurrah. Maybe now that she's left the label, someone will put an embeddable copy of the "I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me" video up on YouTube? (Ha, hahaaha. Just kidding.) In Memoriam: Junior Senior

There hasn't been a lot of great news lately, and today is no exception. Here's one more piece of lousy news to throw on the fire: The delightful Danish dance-pop duo Junior Senior has called it quits. More »

So, the Aussie Zeppelin mimeographers Wolfmother broke up. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to whether or not their Australian label, Modular, going bankrupt last week was a move that was inspired, in part, by advance knowledge of this, what with "long-standing personal and musical differences" being the impetus behind the split and Wolfmother being the label's biggest seller? [The Age]

Sony will become the sole owner of Sony BMG after it buys out Bertelsmann's 50% stake in the company, which will be rebranded as Sony Music Entertainment Inc. (My prototype for the new company's logo is at left.) The sale's rumored value? $1.5 billion. Yes, with a "B." [Reuters]

After pulling out of the Warped Tour earlier this summer, Nashville punk-terrors Be Your Own Pet have announced that they'll be breaking up after they play a smattering of festivals in the UK later this month. No reason was given, but there is a lot of "nooooo"-ing on the band's MySpace blog announcing the split. [MySpace; HT Cassidy2099]

Slash May Have Known Weiland Had To Go For A While

Has there been another case where the firing of a singer led to such excitement? Ok, maybe the end of Van Hagar, but that was a "welcome back" thing, and the reaction was nothing like the way Weiland's departure from Velvet Revolver seems to have loosened the world's sphincter a tad. Or at least Slash's. "Everybody's just very relieved," says Slash. "I know everybody is tying the STP [reunion tour] thing to it, but it started way before that. We just had a lot of commitments to fulfill, so we just had to drag this thing out until the obligations were finished." But our nightmare is over! So what about his replacement? More »

It's official! We even called to verify! WEILAND IS NO LONGER IN VELVET REVOLVER. Ding-dong, the witch is dead. Which old witch? The wicked witch! Ding-dong, the wicked witch is dead. More »

Van Hunt Now Label-less, Blogging

Last April, former Idolator editor Brian Raftery wondered if soul singer Van Hunt was still signed to a major, and whether or not his third album, Popular, would see the light of day. Today, Greg Kot at the Chicago Tribune sheds some light on the first mystery, at least, passing along the MySpace-blogged news that the singer and his label, the EMI subsidiary Blue Note, "are not seeing each other anymore": More »

UB40 Vintner Will Sing The Joys Of Cheap Hooch No More

UB40 frontman Ali Campbell is leaving the band after three decades due to managerial disputes. Sad? Sad. But out of sadness comes an excuse to finally post this video. News of Campbell's departure also made us wonder: Why in the same of ersatz reggae hasn't T-Pain (and/or Akon) sampled/interpolated/covered this yet? [NME/YouTube]

Perry Farrell Will Not Be Guesting On "Rock Star" Anytime Soon

Those of you who have heard Satellite Party, the new flashmobbed-up project from Perry Farrell, have probably been wondering one thing: "Why did Jane's Addiction break up?" (Okay, that probably comes to mind after "Huh??," but still.) Well, Farrell places the blame squarely on the menace of reality television: More »
