The elections must be an exciting time for the news networks because they get to trot out all manner of gadgets and broadcast wizardry that they'll probably never get to use again. It's like they got to go shopping at Skymall for just one day! Fox News had Bill Hemmer's Minority Report-like touchscreen board, and NBC showcased a "virtual studio" wherein poor Anne Curry stood in a green room while some producer whipped stats around her. But the neatest—and most useless—of these studio tricks was CNN's hologram projections, wherein reporters and others were given the Princess Leia treatment. More »

Be warned, TV news junkies: CNN is using Daughtry's cover of Foreigner's "Feels Like The First Time" to entice people to tune into its political coverage starting today. The cover will also appear on the forthcoming reissue of Daughtry's self-titled album, no doubt because Columbia Records wants the 4.2 million people who have already bought the damn thing to feel like buying the new version will actually be their "first time" plunking down $23 for it. Presenting two CNN anchors who, in the sliver of time that they're allotted to discuss one of the day's biggest soft-news stories, find themselves musing over the true meanings of an official statement from Maxim that they haven't seen. And said statement is regarding a review they haven't read. And it covers a band they're completely unfamiliar with (although they do know that Kurt Cobain isn't the Black Crowes' lead singer)!
