In fact, between the four biggest money-making artists, only one scored a Top 40 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 in 2009—and it was a song that peaked at #37. Hop below to see whose cash intake is keeping them in the upper echelon of the pop game. More »

Chris Martin And EMI Can’t Agree On When Coldplay’s New Album Is Coming Out

9:43 AM on Mon Feb 22 2010 by Robbie Daw
In a new interview with Brazilian television network Globo, Chris Martin said that he's hoping for a December 2010 release for Coldplay's fifth studio album. He might want to check in with EMI, however, before making such statements again and causing fans to start joyously singing like Roman cavalry choirs—because the label seems to have a differing opinion on when the record will drop. 11:19 AM on Mon Feb 1 2010 by Becky Bain
Is it too early in the new decade to start another list of the Best Pop Star Appearances on The Simpsons? Chris Martin lent his vocal talents to The Simpsons last night, as he led Coldplay through an LOL-inducing private show for Homer and Bart. Take the jump to see the band's appearance on the show (featuring their Grammy-winning "Viva La Vida"), and bonus footage of Chris Martin goofing off behind the scenes and improvising lines that didn't make the cut of last night's episode: More »

Wyclef Jean, Lady Gaga And Others Call For Everyone To Help Haiti

1:26 PM on Fri Jan 15 2010 by Becky Bain
After visiting Anderson Cooper 360 earlier this week to call a "state of emergency" for his home country of Haiti following the disastrous earthquake, Wyclef Jean personally flew down to the devastation to provide hands-on support. While standing right in the middle of what Jean describes as "the apocalypse," he and his wife were interviewed by a Fox News reporter who calls the rapper/singer "Haiti's version of Bono [and] Bruce Springsteen." Coldplay Bassist Takes Break From Coldplay To Create Coldplay-like Music

3:08 PM on Tue Nov 24 2009 by Becky Bain

Coldplay may be on a “break,” but justlikethat the band’s bassist, Guy Berryman, has emerged with a side project: Apparatjik (which we’ll probably pronounce incorrectly every single time), which plans to move swiftly—the band has already e-mailed its first song to select fans and is aiming to release its debut album next week. Some break. More »

Pet Shop Boys Cover Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ For ‘Christmas’

10:32 AM on Mon Nov 16 2009 by Robbie Daw

One of the highlights of the Pet Shop Boys’ glitzy, colorful Pandemonium tour this year was the duo’s mashup of their own 1988 classic “Domino Dancing” and Coldplay’s 2008 #1 hit “Viva La Vida.” The Boys announced via Twitter earlier this month that a studio recording of the two blended songs—produced by Stuart Price—will be included on Christmas, a five-track EP released, appropriately, in December.

Have a listen to the Pet Shop Boys’ synth-y “Viva La Vida” cover after the jump. More »

The “Parklife” Stamp: Even Better Than Sealing Your Letter With A Kiss

3:00 PM on Thu Oct 15 2009 by Maura

Next year, the UK will issue a series of stamps dedicated to the art of the British album cover. The Stones’ Let It Bleed, New Order’s Power, Corruption, and Lies, Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, and Blur’s Parklife will all be honored in this 10-stamp issue. If the US had a similar stamp issue, I wonder what albums would get the nod? You’d think Thriller would be a no-brainer, and Madonna’s True Blue would look kinda dynamite, but after that… ? (First person to shout Merriweather Post Pavilion!” is fired.) The full issue of stamps after the jump. More »

Joe Satriani’s Suit Against Coldplay Flies Out Of Court

1:30 PM on Wed Sep 16 2009 by Maura

Apparently Joe Satriani’s lawsuit over the similarities between his 2004 track and Coldplay’s megahit from last year “Viva La Vida” has been settled, as the suit was dismissed earlier this week. A few legal types have suggested to Billboard that money might have changed hands, which I guess will ease Satriani’s sting over Coldplay not being forced to apologize for what they’ve done. Relive the days when lawsuits ruled these two parties’ world with John P. Strohm’s thoughts on the case, or embeds of the two tracks after the jump. More »

Will You Go Crazy If You Don’t Avoid That U2 Ad Tonight?

5:00 PM on Thu Aug 27 2009 by Maura

Since everyone’s feeling contentious today, here’s an argument for the ages: Which wore out its welcome more quickly, the Coldplay iTunes ad from last summer, or the U2 Blackberry ad that’s running on TV now? My vote is for the U2 ad, for two reasons: First, it seems to be on TV all the time, and second, its opening line about generations always, always makes me think back to Fury In The Slaughterhouse’s 1993 alt-rock also-ran “Every Generation Has Its Own Disease,” a song that haunted my freshman year of college and still reminds me of the worst parts of the rise of Q101-approved rock. In case you’ve somehow missed one (or both) of the spots, they’re after the jump! More »
