Lou Pearlman Says "Bye, Bye, Bye" To The Possibility Of Ever Being Financially Solvent

Former boy-band svengali/current guest of the federal pokey Lou Pearlman has been ordered to repay some $300 million to the investors who he bilked over years of real-estate fraud and Ponzi-like scheming. How did Pearlman amass these ill-gotten gains? Glad you asked! "The FBI and FDIC determined Pearlman took $195 million from more than 1,000 people in an alleged savings program promising 6 percent to 10 percent returns, and $126.7 million in bogus loans from federally insured banks. Another $70 million was invested by people who thought they were buying shares in companies owned by Pearlman that mostly had no assets. About $95 million was returned to investors over the years, documents show." Well, you'd think that he'd at least be given some points for trying, there. Instead, he may have to pay back even more money! More »

Mindy McCready: A Musical Context

Those of you who, like me, only know of Mindy McCready from her appearances on various Roger Clemens-releated legal documents and newswires—she appeared on the latter again last night, thanks to reportedly saying that she worked more hours than she really did on a community service report—and looking for reasons why she keeps cropping up in the news may be interested to hear her spunky country No. 1 "Guys Do It All The Time." (It came out in 1996, when I was burrowed further down the college-radio rabbit hole than I ever had been or would be, and reached No. 72 on the Hot 100.) After the jump, another McCready track, this one a breakup anthem that was apparently covered by members of L7 after the fact. More »

T.I. Signs Three-Picture Deal, Gets Ready For Concert Tour And, Oh Yeah, Prison

Why are they putting T.I. in jail again? Seeing as how he's just signed a three-picture deal (which includes an upcoming role as a burglar alongside Idris Elba and Matt Dillon in Bone Deep) and is preparing for a TV show and a concert tour, both of which T.I. vs. T.I.P. didn't guarantee on sales and merit alone, it doesn't seem like a year (or less, probably less) in jail is really going to make him regret his recent crimes. Then again, if his current house detention allows him to tour and hang around outside Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills late at night, perhaps "prison" might just mean a stint at Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab for gun addiction. Evidence In Jam Master Jay's Death Belatedly Given To MTV, Possibly Police

Almost six years after the murder of Jam Master Jay, MTV has come in contact with a man who claims to have the Run-DMC DJ's two-way pager, which allegedly was left at a club in Milwaukee days before his shooting. Despite a headline claiming that the pager is "possibly a crucial piece of evidence in his murder," it's not until we've reached the end of the piece—after we get to read personal messages sent to the pager the night of Jay's death—that we're told why this wasn't given to the police during President Bush's first term. Turns out the police never "reached out" to Eric "Shake" James, and I guess this is the kind of "possibly crucial piece of evidence" one needs to be asked to hand over. MTV's got the NYPD's private line, though, so once they've published some of the heartbreaking contents of the pager, they'll try to hook-up a meet-and-greet. More »

Amy Incarcerated (For Now, At Least) Amy Winehouse has been arrested by London's Metropolitan Police on suspicion of assault after stopping by the police station to be interrogated about a pair of incidents: "The 24-year-old has reportedly been accused of headbutting a man who tried to help by hailing her a taxi outside a bar. She was also alleged to have punched a second man in the face in the early hours of Wednesday." [Sky / Photo: AP]

Turbonegro's Happy-Tom Witnesses The Arrival Of An Abandoned "Pot Boat"

When California's KUSI interviewed a "surfer" in Sunset Cliffs about a boat containing marijuana that had washed up on the store, they clearly didn't realize that Tom Seltzer was better known as Happy-Tom, bassist for the legendary Norwegian band Turbonegro. If you don't know Turbonegro, I recommend checking out the following songs: "Rock Against Ass," "Are You Ready (For Some Darkness)," "The Midnight NAMBLA," "Everybody Loves A Chubby Dude," and "Do You Dig Destruction?" For fans who don't want to watch the entire broadcast, we've got Happy-Tom's quotes after the jump. More »

Remy Ma's sentencing for shooting an acquaintance of hers in the abdomen last summer—for which she was charged with assault, weapons possession, and attempted coercion—has been pushed back from its original April 23 date to May 13. Remy is being held at Rikers without bail until her sentencing, which could keep her in the pokey for as long as 25 years, although sources are claiming that she'll probably only have to serve three to five. T.I. To Youth: "Take It Slow, Buy Your Artillery Legally"

T.I. recently gave the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a look into his chastened, post-trial soul as he prepares to fufill a year of community service before imprisonment. "Sometimes it was like, 'If I don't get this right now I'm just going to lose it'... When you're going 350 mph it tends to be that way. But when you are stopped—halted—not slowed down, but halted, you figure 'Well I could have just slowed down. I didn't have to be stopped.'... GM had to back up off of me. There are films that I missed out on. Not speaking of, of course, shows. Tours. Tons of business. I've probably lost about $10 to $12 million dollars." See, kids? If you don't take the time to acquire your weapons through the correct channels, you'll miss out on some potential business ventures. More »

Robert "Vanilla Ice" Van Winkle has been charged with domestic battery after being arrested at his home in Florida. Ice's wife, Laura, called police to the couple's house last night after an argument that apparently resulted in physical violence; he's now been ordered by a judge to stay away from his wife, and he can only have contact with his children through one of his friends. Can someone remind me why anyone would ever want to be famous again? Incidents like this kind of make me forget. [TMZ / Mug via The Smoking Gun]

Music Writers Will All Be Criminals If Universal Music Group Has Its Way

I love the way Universal Music Group is stubbornly trying to hold on to the revenue stream of "lawsuits against anyone who dare cross us." It's so cute, isn't it? Well, those of you out there who have ever been the unwilling recipient of one of UMG's shittier promo CDs may not think it's so cute once you realize that the record company is now trying to go after anyone who's not only sold one of said promos, but tried to be at least a little bit more ethical about flipping stuff they got for free by throwing the unwanted discs in the trash. Those CDs are property of Universal Music Group forever, dammit! And you can bet they'll come around in 50 years to make sure that you still have that copy of Dreaming Out Loud that has "must be surrendered upon demand" stamped on its front, and if a thorough search of your place doesn't turn up that CD, you will be in so much trouble. Pete Doherty has been sentenced to jail for 14 weeks for violating probation after getting caught with drugs in October. They're saying he'll probably only serve a month, and I know there's some kind of Dohertorium around here. But whatevs to that stab at dignity: I just want to celebrate the faint possibility of seven issues of Rolling Stone without a photo of the guy. [BBC]

"Sonny Bono Assassinated!" Say FBI Agent, Tabloid

Law officials, Sonny Bono's family, and Eminem were all satisfied with the story that the Congressman and ex-Cher consort died after colliding with a tree while skiing in 1998. But according to former FBI agent Ted Gunderson, Bono may have been beat to death by "ruthless assassins" to keep him from releasing information that linked government officials to weapons dealers. Law & Order, Francis Ford Coppola—somebody get on this! More »

Blotter "Police are searching for a man accused of shoving an electric guitar in his pants and walking out of a store in Lewiston, Maine.... One of the men shoved a Fender Stratocaster in his pants and pulled a sweatshirt over the top. The other two acted as lookouts. All three can be seen on footage from video surveillance. Strangely enough, the music shop has seen the method before. A man did the same thing in 2006 but was caught as he tried to walk out." I really want to see this tape, just to confirm my hunch that the guy responsible for lifting the guitar was wearing Zubaz. [AP; HT Balk / Photo: Getty]

Look who the cops dragged in: Poison drummer Rikki Rockett was arrested on a strong-arm rape warrant after he arrived in the U.S. from a trip to New Zealand on Monday, according to reports. It's unclear when the warrant, issued in Neshoba County, Mississippi, was issued against the surf-loving drummer. [Los Angeles Daily News / Photo: AP]

T.I.'s plea deal came down this afternoon: "In the year that he is awaiting sentencing, T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, must complete at least 1,000 hours of a total 1,500 hours of community service, talking to youth groups about the pitfalls of guns, gangs and drugs. He will be sentenced to serve about 12 months in prison after completing the community service, officials said." He'll also have three years of "supervised home detention" and be forced to pay $100,000 in fines. [AP]

A New York jury has found Remy Ma guilty of assault charges. Remy—born Remy Jones—was standing trial on a July 14 incident outside the now-shuttered (and really overrated when it was open) Manhattan nightclub Pizza Bar, during which she fired a shot at a "friend" after a quarrel over some stolen money. Remy Ma's defense, which conceded that while she did engage in some light gunplay it was all accidental, didn't convince the jury. She now faces up to 25 years in prison. [AP / Photo: AP]

T.I. Expected To Plead Guilty In Weapons Case

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that T.I. is expected to file a guilty plea today in response to multiple Federal weapons charges against him, and that he "faces certain prison time" as a result. T.I.—born Clifford Harris—has been under house arrest since October, when he was arrested in a weapons sting. The plea is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, with his sentencing scheduled for a later date; the Associated Press' sources are claiming that his sentence will involve 1,500 hours of community service—during which he'll speak to youth groups around the country "about the pitfalls of guns, gangs and drugs"—and 12 months in the federal pokey, which could be shortened if he's on good behavior. Chuck Phillips' latest Los Angeles Times article implicating Sean Combs in the shooting of Tupac Shakur may have been based on fradulent FBI reports created by Frank Sabatino, a 31-year-old scam artist who likes to get up close and clerical with rap superstars. In 2011, Phillips will a reveal a new theory of the crime based on lyrics by the Game. [The Smoking Gun]
