Dakota Fanning seems awfully proud of her twisted turn as the rebellious teen Cherie Currie in the new rocker biopic, The Runaways, though it may have stunned some of her fans. When she hit up Lopez Tonight to promote the movie, though, Dakota was the one in for a shock: Lopez decided to prod her into getting a tattoo, live on the show. Fanning protested, saying that she had promised her mom that she would never get inked — because after all, Dakota Fanning and tattoos go together like…well, like Dakota Fanning and tattoos. Thankfully, Kat Von D of Miami Ink saved the day, marking Dakota with a tat that will wear off almost as fast as the “drugs” she did in the movie. We’ve watched Dakota Fanning grow up on camera, so we pretty much regard her as our make-believe little sister. Our sweet, innocent, goody-two-shoes little sister. Which must be why watching D-Fan thrust, strut and shake in barely-there lingerie (not to mention be grabbed and groped by a guy) in this The Runaways video montage makes us feel, well, icky. You’ve already heard Dakota rock out as Cherie Currie on the film’s soundtrack—now you can watch the sixteen-year old in action after the jump. Just be prepared to feel super uncomfortable when you realize how much you enjoy it.

To be fair, this isn’t the first time this week we’ve felt awkward watching a teen star cross into more mature musical territory. But we think Dakota does a great job capturing Currie, and her courage to tackle such a sexual, gutsy role so early in her career indicates that she’ll more than likely transition into adult roles seamlessly.

We’ve been treated to a few brief glimpses of what to expect in the upcoming Runaways biopic via quick snippets of the stars playing their roles, but today we finally got a sneak peak of what really matters: the music. We know Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have got the glam-rock look down pat—but can they pull off Cherie Currie’s and Joan Jett’s powerful punk vocals? Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning – “Cherry Bomb”

We’ll admit it—we’re surprised. Can you blame us? It’s not like Kristen and Dakota were featured on any of the Twilight soundtracks like their pal Robert Pattinson. The girls manage to summon a bit of the attitude and grit of the classic Runaways version—though they’re missing the fury of Cherie’s and Joan’s performances. And those deep, throat-full-of-razors vocals are hard to replicate:

Oh, how we hate ourselves for loving Stew. Yep, here’s a teaser trailer for The Runaways, the biopic about the 70s all-female rock band, with Twilight‘s vampire bait Kristen Stewart decked out in mullety splendor for her portrayal of Joan Jett.

In the film, directed by music vid veteran Floria Sigismondi, K-Stew (who can sing) joins a cast that includes all-grown/tarted-up Dakota Fanning playing Cherie Currie. The movie will premiere during the Sundance Film Festival in January, but check out the promising (albeit brief) trailer below — you got nothin’ to lose:

We really don’t think we can handle Dakota Fanning already old enough to wear sexy clothing and convincingly thrash around onstage in a rock band. (The original Churrie joined The Runaways at age 16; Fanning’s 15.). Then again, she was upstaging Sean Penn at age 7 and getting sexually assaulted on camera at age 13, so she’s never really played the part of an adorable innocent tyke.

Kristen Stewart is really singing “Cherry Bomb” in the trailer—not too shabby, although we’ll reserve final judgment until we see the movie. And maybe it’s a good thing, too, that Kristen Stewart is playing the part of a famous musician now that her on-and-off-screen companion Robert Pattinson has been caught slinking around Hollywood with one. Guess the dude’s got a type.
