Lady Gaga Does Her Best Pete Burns Impersonation On ‘Rolling Stone’ Cover

Tue May 24 2011 by Robbie Daw
When Lady Gaga's not gracing the front of such magazines as V, Harper's Bazaar, NME and Vogue, the Born This Way popstrel likes to hit up Rolling Stone. After all, the upcoming issue will mark the third time Mother Monster has appeared on the cover of the longstanding music publication. But was she intentionally paying homage to Dead Or Alive frontman Pete Burns? Because the resemblance here has us spinning right round (like a record)! See below. More »

Five Ways Flo Rida Can Save His Label Some Money Next Time

Fri Mar 6 2009 by Dan Gibson

Flo Rida is currently dominating the charts with “Right Round,” his (and Dr. Luke’s) re-imagining of Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).” But it’s not just his two-hit wonderdom that makes me think he might be the ultimate pop star for this crazy time. Billboard asked him how he came around to using the Dead or Alive track, and his basic response was that his A&R guy at Atlantic asked him to use the song, so he did. While that’s likely been great news for whatever plastic surgeon Pete Burns sold his songwriting share to for services rendered, I had to wonder why the A&R guy didn’t think of what could be plundered from the Atlantic catalog before providing revenue to Dead or Alive’s then-label Epic. Eminem: Not Quite As Popular As Flo Rida, But Still Setting Records

Wed Feb 11 2009 by Maura

Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle” sold 418,000 downloads in its first week at digital-music stores, setting a record for first-week download sales and propelling itself to No. 1 on this week’s Hot 100. That total is also third on the all-time list of single-week sales, behind Lady Ga Ga’s “Just Dance” (which moved 419,000 copies for the Jan. 10 chart week) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (which sold 467,000 copies the week of Jan. 12, 2008). Those are nice numbers for the long-absent Slim Shady, sure, but if the current iTunes Store top 10 is a bellwether, his record could be short-lived—thanks to the combined power of Flo Rida, Dr. Luke, oral sex, and Pete Burns.

The Definitive Word On That Pete Burns Sex Tape (And Pop Culture In 2008)

Tue Apr 22 2008 by Maura

“I just wish it was 1987 again, and Pete was still signed to a major and making great pop records. All this reality TV shit has killed a part of him. He was one of pop’s greatest mysteries at one time, now he’s on the internet getting rimmed… More »

The Regeneration Tour: Because There Aren’t Enough Naked Ploys For Nostalgia Out There

Thu Apr 10 2008 by Maura

Perhaps realizing that “’80s music” has become a genre of its own, and that there’s no better way to grab dollars from the thirtysomething demographic than to remind them of the hits of their youth, Red Entertainment Agency has announced that this summer would mark the first Regeneration Tour, in which six artists from the synthpop age will tour the countryside. Those artists–The Human League, Belinda Carlisle, ABC, Dead Or Alive, A Flock of Seagulls, and Naked Eyes–will likely get to play short sets that are made up of mostly hits a la the UK’s Here and Now Tour. But what have they been up to in the years following their glory days? The answers are mostly pretty depressing, with the most sigh-inducing ones involving either reality television or showing skin.
