Dave Gahan Nearly Causes International Incident By Just Saying Goodbye

During the closing song of Depeche Mode’s show on Tuesday in Lima, Peru, concertgoers who had been having a fine time up to that point were sent into a tizzy when they thought they heard DM lead singer Dave Gahan bid farewell to the people of neighboring Chile—after all, as the AP helpfully notes, “The South American neighbors are historic rivals who fought a 19th century war and still argue over everything from their border to which country is the originator of pisco, a potent grape brandy.” A clip of the offending moment is above, with Gahan yelling out two sign-offs at around 1:03 and 1:43; in the latter farewell, he’s clearly saying “Thank you very much, good night,” but I have no idea what he’s saying at the earlier point. Listen and tell me this: What is he saying at the minute-and-three mark? Because really, the distortion and crowd noise are terrible. [YouTube / AP] MORE »

Depeche Mode Adds Another “CANCELLED” To Its Tour Itinerary

depeche-mode-144x120 Depeche Mode’s show in San Diego tonight is the latest to be canceled because of problems forcing lead singer Dave Gahan to continue the complete vocal rest that torpedoed Wednesday’s show in San Francisco. “We are incredibly disappointed to not be able to perform for our fans tonight in San Diego,” Gahan said in a statement. “We hope to be back soon to play for all our fans in the area.” The band’s next show, scheduled for Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl, is still on as of this writing. depeche-mode-144x120Depeche Mode has canceled tonight’s show at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., because vocalist Dave Gahan has reportedly been ordered to embark on 48 hours of complete vocal rest by a physician. This is the second time that shows on the band’s current world tour have been canceled for medical reasons; this spring, a low-grade tumor was discovered on Gahan’s bladder and the band canceled a series of shows in Europe. As of now, the band’s next show—scheduled for Friday in San Diego—is still on. [SFGate] MORE »

What Would Be On Your “2009 Awesomeness” Playlist Right Now?

joyformidablecradleAs promised: The state of my “2009 awesomeness” playlist, in which I collect the songs that catch my ear as the year progresses in order to not make my best-of list a last-minute-of-December clusterfuck sort of thing. (It inevitably winds up being like that, but you know, I have noble intentions.) It’s after the jump, and has some contextual links added in. Feel free to make your own and share it here! MORE »

Dave Gahan’s Medical Woes Extended Far Beyond A Touch Of Stomach Flu

depeche-modeDepeche Mode has been canceling concerts left and right over the past month thanks to lead singer Dave Gahan suffering from what was thought to be a particularly nasty bout of gastroenteritis–until further tests revealed that the singer had a low-grade tumor in his bladder, which doctors removed successfully. As a result of Gahan needing time to recover, the band has canceled or postponed all of its upcoming shows through their June 8 date in Leipzig, Germany, and an announcement about the shows that were scratched as a result of Gahan’s illness should come next week. The European shows that are still happening are listed after the jump. MORE »

picture-11 Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan was rushed to an Athens hospital yesterday after falling ill in his dressing room before a concert last night. The band subsequently postponed the show to this evening, but according to a statement on the band’s Web site, Gahan’s condition is such that he can’t perform tonight, either. No word on what might be ailing him, but here’s hoping for a speedy recovery. [Reuters] MORE »

Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” Video Is Right Freaky

The video for Depeche Mode’s new single, “Wrong,” only takes three minutes to be more nerve-wracking than most of the horror movies or Hollywood thrillers I see every year. The Justin Daughters-directed clip begins with a car careening backwards, running into things, its driver slumped over in the front seat. The driver comes to, and you see that he’s bound by duct tape, his face covered in a mask. It’s like the Bizarro World version of that first scene in North By Northwest where Roger Thornhill drunkenly careens down a twisty mountain road—only the difference here is that the lack of the “driver’s” control is palpable, and not played for laughs. You knew Cary Grant’s gonna make it out in the end. But this poor schlub? MORE »

That's the not first scene in North by Northwest. It starts in Manhattan....right?

Seven-Word Reviews Of Seven New Pop Songs

This was one of those two-day stretches where pop leak blogs were in overdrive, thanks to the songs leaking from every crevice in the music industry’s crumbling firmament (including its artists’ own blogs). Who wins? Well, the ad sales team at RapidShare, for sure. As far as listeners’ fates, the results are decidedly more mixed, as you’ll see from the brief reviews of new songs by Kanye West and T-Pain, Green Day, Dr. Dre and T.I., the Black Eyed Peas, Depeche Mode, Jennifer Lopez, and Ciara located after the jump.
