The Morning Mix: The Many Shades Of Mark Ronson

Mon Jul 19 2010 by Becky Bain
Did You Hear?

:: Check out Mark Ronson's album cover art for his new album Record Collection, that includes a nice shout-out to Duran Duran's "Rio." [Arjan Writes]

:: Ke$ha is still workin' the body paint. We kind of miss the glitter. [Just Jared]

:: With her bruise-inducing fall last week, Pink has joined the ranks of Beyonce and Britney Spears in the Stage Falls Hall Of Fame. [MTV]

:: Out of all the names that have been tossed around to play Janis Joplin in a biopic—from Brittany Murphy to Pink to Zooey Deschanel—we never imagined Amy Adams would end up with the role. Not because she's not a great actress, but because she usually gets typecast as princesses and nuns and pretty ingenues, not rock-n-roll legends who died of heroin overdoses. [Celebuzz]

:: The members of Devo are launching a web reality show. Reality shows are typically bad, but Devo is usually good. We don't know how to feel about this. It's a wash? [Paste]

The 11 Best Musical Performances On ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’

Tue Apr 6 2010 by Becky Bain
Given the soul-crushing cascade of tween wannabes churning out monotonous pop junk for young audiences lately, we have plenty reason to fear for the future of America's music taste. But we're not worried. Why? Because in 2007, Yo Gabba Gabba debuted on the air.

The colorful, happy-go-lucky (and pretty trippy) Nick Jr. program was originally intended for a pre-school demographic, but has adopted a huge following among grown-up music fans by booking offbeat acts to perform on the show—from Weezer to Sean Kingston to more quirky fare like The Aquabats (which, not so coincidentally, is the band of series co-creator Christian Jacobs). Now the show, named by Entertainment Weekly as "TV's hippest kids show," has gotten so popular, the Gabba crew even performed at the White House during the annual Easter Egg Roll and are embarking on a live tour.

In the words of our favorite pint-sized Yo Gabba Gabba friend Nathaniel: Our name is Idolator, and we like to dance! If you like to dance, too, check out our list of the best 11 music acts to appear on the kiddie program, which happens to play more music than MTV does nowadays. And if you dig these original tunes, you're in luck—many of these acts will appear on the show's first official soundtrack. Music is awesome! More »

This sped-up reworking of Van Halen’s AOR staple “I’ll Wait” was dubbed “I’ll Wait (Devo Speed)” by a commenter ’round these parts, and it sounded so herky-jerky and good to these ears, I just had to pay tribute via Photoshop. (The Misfits-y hijacking of Danzig’s “Mother” linked from the message-board thread responsible for these shenanigans is worth your time, too.) [Boxstr via ILX; HT Jess/Paul] More »

Josh Freese Is Going To Redefine “Value-Added”

Wed Feb 18 2009 by Dan Gibson

It’s hard not to like the way that journeyman drummer Josh Freese is trying to make a few extra bucks from the release of his new album, Since 1972. Where else can you purchase an album, a drum lesson, a few previously worn outfits and a trip to a strip club with a semi-famous drummer for only $2,500?
