Dillinger Escape Plan Bring Their Pencils

This video of Dillinger Escape Plan covering Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher” is from last year’s Warped Tour, and its attendant comment section is littered with a bunch of Internet pedants bitching about the minor flubs of the lyrics, but oh man did stumbling across this YouTube clip make my day. Of course, no one with a knowledge of the DEP’s ability to shred should be surprised by the note-perfect replicas of Eddie Van Halen, but you have to give whoever’s on backing vocals extra credit for performing his Michael Anthony duties more than ably. Weingarten texted me from Trent Reznor’s maybe-quitting-the-Internet-because-of-you farewell show at Bonnaroo late Saturday night. “Check YouTube every 30 seconds!” Alas, searches for said performance on the video-sharing have turned up dry for me so far–but all is not lost, since they engaged in this little bit of collaboration in March ~~2008~~, too. Dillinger Escape Plan Know Your Anger, Know Your Dreams

One of the best metal bands going, Dillinger Escape Plan, tried their hands at one of the best metal songs in history, Living Colour’s “Cult Of Personality,” last Saturday show in New York. And the results were, shall we say, less than power in your God’s name. But, if you click in to watch it, I promise at least one kinda-related video that’s worth your time.

So yeah, Ben Weinman is playing with two hands instead of Vernon Reid’s ability to pretty much play anything with just one. And lead singer Greg Puciato can’t really hit all the notes, and is sadly not wearing a neon Body Glove. But, you know what, if I was there I would have freaked the fuck out anyway, so kudos.

And this gives us the most tenuous of connections to post this clip of Jim Carrey as Pee Wee Herman on the similarly named TV show In Living Color!

Kerrang! Awards Prove That At Least A Few People Who Aren’t EMI’s Lawyers Still Care About 30 Seconds To Mars

Last night, the troubled British rock magazine Kerrang! held its annual awards show, and the slate of nominees and winners represented something of a slight stylistic shift for the mag, which has probably noticed the circulation gains experienced by Metal Hammer and adjusted its coverage accordingly. Out go My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds To Mars; in come the Dillinger Escape Plan and, um, 30 Seconds To Mars, which was the “big” winner on the evening because it won two awards (Best International Band and Best Single). Disturbed Vs. Dillinger Escape Plan: The Crankiness Continues

It all started when Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman mocked Disturbed’s sound check, claiming the body-modification champions were “practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose.” Disturbed has since responded, saying a) all they do is make sure the guitarist is under the spotlight for his big solo and b) how the hell did some dillweed punk guitarist get into the room during their sound check anyway? Sez the happy dude pictured to the left: “It’s called production — it’s what any big professional band that isn’t just punk rock… Not to say that there is anything wrong with punk rock, because I have my roots in it, but you can’t compare the two styles of a show.” But Weinman isn’t buying it.

First Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan protested to MTV (a little too much) that he didn’t give a shit about these punkers:

“When we do a bigger production, there may be certain lighting cues for certain highlights of the show, but I wouldn’t call it ‘posing,’ just a cue for our lighting guy, so he can add more drama to the set. If [Dillinger] sold some records, and were at the level we’re at, maybe they’d see that, for bands like Kiss and Metallica, there are certain highlight points during a set that you want to focus on. If I’m going to go over to one spot and do a guitar solo, my lighting guy may need to know that, so he can focus in on that.

If that’s posing, then so be it. To me, I don’t think we talk about when we’re going to put our foot up on a monitor. That’s just silly. It’s a natural thing we do. Those guys can say whatever they want. If that’s supposed to be a jab at us, am I offended? I don’t give a shit. If they’re saying it because they’re haters, why? Because we sell millions of records and lots of tickets? It sounds more like jealousy to me.”

Then Weinman made fun of Donegan on Myspace for giving a shit:

The guitar player Dom Deluise or whatever his name is with the little peen complex from that band Disturbia or whatever they’re called thinks that we care about them. Old news, but still funny. Check it. “My Ferrari is better than your Honda!!! Our stages come apart and travel with us and yours don’t!!! We have thirty guitar techs and you have one!”. Coooool self esteem barometer douchebag. Wait…what’s that I hear? The sound of your band still sucking? Oh, right. Gotcha there, bud.

Now Draiman’s trying to bring the peace on Rockline:

The Dillinger Escape Plan are more punk and I respect them for what they do — I’m not even calling them out on any level, in any way shape or form. I like the style of what they do. I don’t understand what the hell they think they saw with us, but gentlemen, let me give you a little bit of education: This is what the big boys do who play stadium shows — they wanna worry about how the lights look that they spend so much money on.”

The video for “Inside The Fire,” from Disturbed’s recently released Indestructible, opens with a suicide prevention spot by Draiman, followed by a woman hanging herself in her apartment before Three Times One Minus One could make it a’ight. Instead, Draiman enters her apartment, drops his groceries and yells “no!” as he and the band pose for a while before covering themselves with her blood. Draiman puts a shotgun into his a mouth, only to appear straight-jacketed in a loony bin, as the suicide prevention number is shown again.

I don’t think you have to be Dillinger Escape Plan to find this totally ridiculous.

Disturbed Strike A Pose, Horrify Dillinger Escape Plan Guitarist

Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weiman recently described watching body-piercing enthusiasts Disturbed practice their turn-turn-kick-turns before a show in England. “[They were] practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose. That was weird for us. There are times where I don’t even know where I am.” Hey dude, maybe if you worked on your on-stage theatrics you’d be as big as they are! Don’t hate just cuz you’re not down with the sickness! Oooh-wah-ah-ah-ah!

I’ve flipped through a few Disturbed YouTubes, and sadly haven’t found much in the way of melodramatic stances. This posing issue is probably just a lighting thing. Here they are performing “Just Stop” in Kuwait for Operation MySpace.

And here’s Dillinger Escape Plan in comparison. The big difference seems to be that their singer goes past the edge of the stage, so he can yell with his people and get caught in a mosh or something.

I’m not saying “hey, don’t make fun of Disturbed.” Please, let’s. I just refuse to believe this is as lame as they get during soundcheck.
