• This fan of the band is going to any length it can to avoid that "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" cover that was tacked on to the reissue.
• Buyer is opening a store that's a throwback to the late '80s and is looking for every "realistic" detail he can find, down to the ecologically unfriendly longboxes that protected CDs from fingerprints.
• Lou Pearlman's estate is doing everything it can to creatively "hide" its assets.
• A misplaced decimal point? A curious need for the color palette near the bottom of the album art? The longbox bubble is the new housing bubble? The mind reels.

<![CDATA[How Did This Guitar Only Sell For $255?]]>

OK, so it's probably really heavy to tote around on stage. And a pain in the ass to take on tour. And if one neck breaks you're likely going to be in need of four replacements. But surely these specifications are at least worth $100 a paragraph before shipping?

Second neck is 8 string mandolin neck with 20 frets on rose wood fret board-smooth maple neck with 1 single coil mandolin pickup -Chrome tuning gears hold solid mandolin tune- position marker dots on side of neck-rose wood fully adjustable bridge

Third neck is 5 string banjo with 22 frets and rose wood fret board -1 extra wide banjo pick up provides great banjo sound-position marker dots on side of neck-5th string geared .ivory color tuning gears hold great banjo tune along fully adjustable rosewood bridge-trus rod in neck

Forth neck is 6 string guitar neck with 22 frets on rose wood fret board-smooth maple neck great feel with two full size P-90 guitar pickups which provide great guitar sound-along with chrome tennessee brand tuning gears which hold solid tune- position marker dots on side of neck-chrome bridge and tail piece-trus rod in neck

That's 23 strings, people! And it has a "silver sparkly" finish. I wish I'd known about this before bidding had ended, because I would have gone for it.

<![CDATA[eBay Item Allows You To Imagine What It Would Be Like To Have Shared A Gym Class With Slayer]]> 515d_1.JPGMy high-school yearbooks were notable for this one guy who wore Slayer T-shirts to portrait day year in and year out, but this eBay auction of a 1983 yearbook from South Gate High is doing old Hicksville High one better, as it features pictures of the metal kings in their awkward adolescent years. That school must have had the best Battle of the Bands ever!

This is an extreme rarity. This is an annual/yearbook that features some of the earliest pictures from Slayer. This yearbook is from South Gate High School in South Gate California where Slayer got their first start and a slew of bands followed their path.

This yearbook came out in 1983, so the pictures were probably taken around 1982, making this the pre-Show No Mercy era.

There are a total of 6 pictures in this annual featuring Slayer. All the original and current members of Slayer are pictured here. Kerry King is using his Original BC Rich Mockingbird guitar before he put tar (or whatever it was) to decorate it. The fourth picture shows Jeff Hanneman with a buzz haircut (he was the punk influence in the band).

In this auction I will also include a set of flyers from the era where Slayer played around the South gate area, and features more pictures from the band at this time.

Bidding is already at $51, which makes the yearbook just a hair more expensive than it was when it was first issued. Sadly, all of the band's members seem to have skipped senior picture day—"I chalk it up to being rebelious metal heads that didn't want to be like the rest of the students," the seller says.

Oh, and its all filmed in night vision. None of the clips released so far feature any visible sex, and we're already barfing.

<![CDATA[Gigantic Music Collection Heads Back To The Auction Block]]> 2-1.jpgAfter putting his six-million-song music collection on eBay and getting burned by a fake bidder, Pittsburgh rare-music collector Paul Mawhinney is once again trying to unburden himself of the 45s, LPs, and other pieces of recorded music he's amassed over the years via auction. But this time, he's switched up two key details: First, Mawhinney is letting registered buyers browse through his online database of music, which outlines the market value of each item (only 45s are in it now, but he's currently adding his long players to the site as well); and second—and perhaps most crucially—he's given up on the idea of selling the collection to someone who will keep it intact as a museum piece, thus allowing anyone who wants to turn around and open a rare record store of their own into the fray. <![CDATA[If You Want A Piece Of Lou Pearlman, You Can Find One On eBay]]> AP061027035494.jpgPervy boy-band impresario Lou Pearlman, whose trial on federal bank fraud charges is set for April, has told friends that he's thinking about copping a plea on those charges that would result in him going to the federal pen for up to 25 years. But that doesn't mean he'll be free from jail after that; charges related to the huge investment scheme that he ran through his company Trans Continental Airlines have yet to be filed, and that'll probably add to his sentence if he's found guilty. What's more interesting: The "friend" who told the St. Petersburg Times this little bit of news is now reselling Pearlman's possessions—which he bought at Pearlman's two bankruptcy auctions—on eBay, under the username a-v sales. Among the items on offer are an actual MTV Moonman (bidding currently at $560); other highlights—including an award bestowed upon Pearlman by Mikhail Gorbachev—after the jump.

<![CDATA[Fake Record-Collection Buyer Speaks, Claims That Someone Spoofed His Login]]> 2-3.jpgThe eBay user who placed the $3 million-and-change bid on Pittsburgh-area record collector Paul Mawhinney's three-million-record library is now claiming that he was a victim of identity fraud, and that he had no idea that his account on the auction site had been used to make the winning bid. The user—still only identified by his eBay login, jopsoup—is saying that he checked his e-mail at an Internet cafe to find out that someone had used his account for the fateful bid. (Perhaps the fact that he's checking his e-mail at Internet cafes could serve as a sign that he may not be all that careful with his passwords? Just saying.) The whole incident has caused Mawhinney to give up on eBay, presumably because he's now going to screen prospective buyers a little more carefully than checking their member feedback pages. <![CDATA[Huge Record Collection Sells For $3 Million And Change]]> 2-1.jpgThe library-sized record collection that went on sale via eBay earlier this week has found a buyer, although the collection, which includes more than three million pieces, didn't quite fetch the $50 million that owner Paul Mawhinney had been hoping to get. In fact, the final price didn't inch much further past the $3 million reserve that Mawhinney had set with eBay, although the collection's final price of $3,002,150 is one of the highest selling prices in eBay's history. Details on the person who's claiming to have $3 million on hand are sketchy: He lives in Ireland and goes by the name of jopsoup, and he has 97.1% positive feedback. And it would seem that he's used eBay to buy music-related items before, although none of his purchases have been this big (not to mention expensive to ship across the Atlantic).

From his eBay feedback profile, we learn that items he's purchased in the past include:

A 1-gig memory card for a Fuji camera.
A Wu-Tang hoodie, the seller of which commented "Thank you for a smooth and pleasant transaction. Excellent buyer! A+"
• A piece of positive feedback from a seller named piercingpros, who commented "Fast payment and very friendly... Great Ebayer!"
• And three positive feedbacks from the_beatgraphter, all of which have the same comment: "Nice one Enjoy da Ardcore :) Pleasure doing business recommended A+"

jopsoup's sole piece of negative feedback comes from a user named bikerama!!, who wrote:

Item possbily damaged in post but neg'd me with no contact. Your loss no refund

Here's hoping that Mawhinney and jopsoup work out all of those nasty "postal insurance" details before the collection starts winging its way across the pond.

<![CDATA[How Much Would You Spend For Six Million Songs? (Hint: $50 Million May Not Be Enough)]]> 2-1.jpgIn case you were wondering just who owned that six-million-song music collection that's currently listed on eBay with a starting price of $3 million: Meet Paul Mawhinney, an obsessive music cataloger and record-collectors'-guide publisher who also owned the Pittsburgh-area shop Record-Rama. In a 2003 profile of his business, he was quoted as saying "Almost all the guys out on the front line of the music business are all conniving to get what they can." And given his past history of deals where he's almost made some cash from his collection, it's easy to see why he feels this way!

Mawhinney has had a few prospective buyers for his collection over the years; In 1997, former online-music powerhouse CDNow told Mawhinney they'd buy his collection for $28.5 million, only to wind up in bankruptcy court shortly after; then, a deal to sell his extensive collection of singles to the Library of Congress fell through after Mawhinney's asking price was too rich for the LoC's tax-funded budget. Mawhinney—who wants to have a deal in place by March 1—is still working the archivist angle for future buyers, as evidenced by his thoughts on what would make a suitable home for the collection:

The History of American music belongs in a museum or a library; a place where people who love music and have an interest in history and popular American culture can look, listen, touch, read and appreciate this legacy for future generations. It could be part of a stand-alone music museum, a major exhibit in an existing museum, or the basis of a university music library. Cleverly arranged and displayed, and surrounded by additional cultural memorabilia, the collection could even become a tourist attraction.

We're seeking a buyer who will guarantee to keep the collection intact (other than to sell duplicate copies, if so desired) and to keep the music alive for the enjoyment and music lovers, now and for years to come.

If you represent a museum, library, university, or charitable foundation, or you're a philanthropist interested in purchasing the collection and donating it, please contact the owner's representatives for more information, pricing and a personal on-site inspection.

He's also estimating the value of the collection at $50 million, although if someone can sweet-talk his representatives—one of whom is former sitcom staple Telma Hopkins—perhaps the asking price will be lower. This is the part where I do wish that there was some sort of popular-music museum out there, or at least that the Experience Music Project hadn't ceded all that space to the science fiction guys over the past few years. Sigh.

<![CDATA[Glastonbury Ticket Reseller Is Looking For Someone Who Loves Rocky Road, Chunk]]> This year's Glastonbury Festival, which takes place this weekend in the UK, has tickets that are stamped with the bearer's photo in an effort to sidestep scalpers. What this has resulted in people who can't attend the festival for reasons unrelated to price-gouging attempting to unload their tickets on eBay. The ads all have descriptions of the sellers—brunette with blue eyes, slightly receding hair—attached to them, making the whole enterprise part StubHub, part Nerve. One ad in particular caught our eye, if only because we're thinking that replicating this ID photo will require a very adept glam squad:

According to the listing, the seller's a Fratellis fan, but we have to admit that we're a bit suspect on that particular point. Wouldn't there be some residual bitterness there?

<![CDATA[Novelty Hit From 1990s Can Be Yours For A Mere $1.5 Million]]> Rednex—the Swedish band whose Velveeta-like cover of "Cotton Eye Joe" is a staple at sports events around the U.S.—has put itself up for sale on eBay, with an opening bid of $1.5 million:

The buyer will get 100% of the shares to the Swedish company Rednex AB (equivalent to Ltd.), which owns the trademark, all recordings, all contracts and negotiating rights and is in full power of the artistry. Rednex AB is owned today by 3 individuals who founded the group and who have personally initiated this world's first online sale of a pop band, as well as this web site.
Rednex AB has been spotlessly run for 12 years, is debt free and carrying open books, which will be made fully available for the buyer. The company holds an administrative responsibility towards royalty holders on previous recordings. The running administrative costs average $ 4,000-5,000 in total per year.

The owner of Rednex AB has, as he pleases, the right to record, release, style, tour and manage one of the most successful party bands of our time. The company owns the band, which actually works in a similar way to a company. Over the years performers have come and gone as employees. Rednex, the band, has had 16 performers all in all during the years (though never more than 5 at the same time).

While the prospect of buying a debt-free business should be tempting to anyone, the high price tag makes us think that there are two potential bidders in the running: The New York Yankees, who can now have a band on hand at all times to play "Cotton Eye Joe" when the team needs a kick in the pants; or a slightly evil opportunist who will license the song so aggressively, it'll be nearly unavoidable to the point where asking another person "Where did you go?" will send her into a panic attack at the prospect of being subjected to it yet again.

<![CDATA[Rock And Roll Road-Tripping Just Got A Whole Lot Easier, Stupider]]>

Someone over at the Chicago Reader must have done a power search for the terms "emo" and "big black monster," because they tracked down this rather amazing eBay item: A 2005 Ford F-550 Crew Cab Powerstroke that doubles as a full-service concert stage. Previously owned by Warped Tour act the Picket Line, the "Big Black Monster" is described as the "ultimate rock band tour truck/van," but it sounds more like the ultimate drunken-fratboy pranking device:

I designed and own the truck and I am selling it to who ever wishes to get instant rock fame with this truck. The truck is designed as a ambush style rock concert. When you roll up in the truck and in less then 15 seconds you can rock out a crowd with 20,000 watts of live music and 20 seconds to break down and leave the scene of the crash. It comes as a fully self-contained rock concert with everything a band can ask for...[Ed. note: We're not even going to try and list all this equipment, as we have no idea what it does, but there is a fog machine involved]. This is the real deal for instant rock fame...

One can only imagine what it would be like to load this thing up with a five-piece band, park it at every random event imaginable (state-department funerals, NA meetings), and continually play Smash Mouth's "All Star" until being put down by police sniper fire. That's the dream.

<![CDATA[Elton John Will Not Accept PayPal]]>

You can buy a lot of effed-up things on eBay, from David Coverdale picture-disc clocks to Joe Namath biker movies to a complete season of Mama's Family; heck, you can even buy a six-figure Velvet Underground acetate, and then never pay for it. But the one thing the online auctioneer won't let you buy, apparently, is tickets to next summer's Elton John-led concert for Princess Diana:

The first Concert for Diana tickets have appeared on eBay, priced at up to £300 per pair. But the internet auction site has banned them from sale "out of respect" for the late Princess's memory. It is pulling the listings and contacting vendors to explain that the tickets cannot be re-sold on eBay. One pair of tickets to the concert drew 19 bids in just over an hour.

The auction site has placed a message on its internal community page, saying: "In view of the unique and commemorative nature of the Concert for Diana event and as a mark of respect for the memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, we've decided to prohibit the resale of tickets to this event on the site.

We're not sure if this ban is due to pressure from John—seen here at the 1993 David Cross look-alike competition—but it does seem unfair that eBay is policing the sales for one big concert, and yet still allowing prices to be jacked up for other big, non-commemorative shows to go on unchecked. Or is there some dead-princess martyr discount hidden somewhere in the user agreement?

<![CDATA[Velvet Underground eBay Winner Prepares For "F++++!" Feedback Rating]]> velvets345.jpgBrooklynvegan points us in the direction of this Globe and Mail article, which notes that the closely watched eBay auction for a rare Velvet Underground acetate (final price: $155,401) may have been a bust:

The fabled acetate of the Velvet Underground's famous first recording is still worth only 75 cents (U.S.). This is because the highest bidder in a 10-day online auction for the fragile acetate that ended last Friday evening "has proved to be bogus," a disappointed [acetate owner] Warren Hill said yesterday...

On the weekend [the store overseeing the auction] received an e-mail from the supposed winner who said a friend, unbeknownst to him, had, as a lark, bid on the acetate using his (the supposed winner's) computer at work and account number. "Ohmigod, I'm so sorry," the e-mail read in part. "I can barely afford gas for my car" let alone more than $150,000 for a 40-year-old disc of acetone-covered aluminum.

BV did some Internet sleuthing and thinks the bogus bidder was a gentleman named Oscar, who's somehow involved with a soon-to-be-launched L.A. music site called Scenestar (he also lists about two gazillion "favorite bands" on his MySpace page, though the Velvets are left out). Does this make sense to anyone? If so, drop us a line at tips@idolator.com.

<![CDATA[Lou Reed Frantically Trying To Set Up PayPal Account]]>

Earlier this month, we mentioned a rare Velvet Underground acetate—purchased for 75 cents at a Manhattan flea market—that was going up on eBay; the auction ended Friday night, and the record went for a whopping $155,401 (that's nearly twice Lou Reed's annual scowl-maintenance budget). The winning bidder is someone named "mechadaddy," and according to our well-placed sources, he/she is an "excellent eBayer!!!!!!!!" who has sold tickets and SuperDiscs on the site. If you have any info as to the buyer's identity (even though we still think it's Lou), drop us a line at tips@idolator.com.

And if you're looking for other eBay deals this week, might we suggest:

— A rare DVD/CD combo of Vanilla Ice's out-of-print 1991 film Cool As Ice, a Cheever-like examination of suburban mores.
— A seemingly home-made Nickelback T-shirt.
—A collection of Aaron Neville magazine articles.

<![CDATA[Reed It And Weep: The Most Expensive Velvet Underground Collectible Of All Time]]>

If you happen to be drunk and alone—and yet still able to recite your checking-account number without skipping a digit—it's probably best that you skip this item for later, as we don't want to be held liable for your ill-advised online-auction sprees. But we encourage everyone else to check out this eBay auction, in which an insanely rare Velvet Underground acetate is currently hovering in the low five figures. From a write-up in Goldmine magazine:

In September of 2002 Warren Hill of Montreal Canada was perusing a box of records at a Chelsea, New York street sale when he happened upon a nice Leadbelly 10" on Folkways, a water damaged copy of the first Modern Lovers LP on Beserkely, and a brittle 12" piece of acetone-covered aluminum with the words "Velvet Underground. 4-25-66. Att N. Dolph" written on the label. He purchased the three records for 75 cents each...

We pieced together that this was probably a surviving copy of the legendary Scepter studios recordings which had been regarded as lost (hence the epic moniker "the lost scepter studios recordings" applied to these unheard sessions over the years). The recording is comprised of the primitive first "finished" version of the LP that Andy Warhol had shopped to Columbia as a ready-to-release debut album by his protege collective "The Velvet Underground".

This acetate, which is possibly the only surviving copy, represents the first Velvet Underground album as Andy Warhol intended it to be released...it was said by some that the master tapes had burned in a fire, by others that all of those recordings ended up being on the released album, and still by others that the only existing copy of that material was on an acetate owned by David Bowie, and that he was known to tout it as his most prized possession.

The current high bid is $18,100, placed by one "n1ckman." We're guessing his PayPal trail leads back to one Lewis Allen Reed, who's looking for something to liven up his new rec room-slash-raven sanctuary.

<![CDATA[Red Hot Chili Peppers' Funky Flunkies Clearly In Need Of Raise]]>

Apparently that Stadium Arcadium money has not yet trickled down to the lower echelons of the Chili Peppers' staff, as two of the group's roadies are auctioning off the privilege of placing a custom-made advertisement on the backs of their T-shirts:

Here is the deal if you win the auction:
* You email us a Jpeg or Gif of the advertisiment you would like displayed.
* We will then print the graphic onto two 8-1/2" x 11" pieces of paper and
* At the agreed upon show date, the Pepper's roadies Scott the Lampi and Dave Rat will afix the ad to the back of our shirts for the duration of the Peppers live perfomance, approximately 90 minutes.

So far, they're at $172.50. We're not sure if they're obliged to take whatever ads they get, but we're hoping the winner opts for "Enough With The Solo Muckity-Muck, Frusciante!" or "Kabbalah? Really?"
