“Ego Trip’s (White) Rapper Show” Wraps It Up

Last night, Ego Trip’s (White) Rapper Show closed out its inaugural season on VH1, and the Atlanta MC Shamrock was crowned the $100,000 winner, defying both our predictions and runner-up John Brown’s incessant self-branding. MORE »

Yeah, Jon Brown really has talent, but he's still got that young cocky attitude that turned a lot of people off. I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Persia get record deals.

Idolator Handicaps “Ego Trip’s (White) Rapper Show”

Here at the flophouse, we can’t stop unpacking the layers of irony in VH1’s Ego Trip’s (White) Rapper Show. We are pleased to see the program progressing according to our plan: 100 Proof and G-Child were certainly a fun pair to watch (especially G-Child’s little b-boy dance–how cute!), but Serch and Prince Paul recognized their dearth of talent and reclaimed their green Converse. After the jump, we handicap the remaining six white rappers, and give odds on those destined to receive the Gas Face: MORE »

As a black man I don't find the show offensive in the least. If I were white and a rapper, however, then audition finalists G-Child, Misfit and to some degree 100 Proof would have definitely offended me. Obviously, like every other reality show created, this was about paring personalities first and talents second.

Disclaimer: I have quite a few background tracks on this show and because I don't get a cue sheet until the end of the show, I watch every week to see what has been placed. However, I think I would've watched this show anyways. Like any good reality show I find it pretty entertaining and being a hip hop head I can relate.

Personally, I like John Brown over Persia, but that's probably a West Coast thing. Everything he respresents (being from Davis, CA)is strictly Bay Area style, although that may be to his disadvantage because both songs he spearheaded definitely had that Hyphy spirit about it. I gotta feeling that ultimately thats not what Serch is looking for.

A Few Lines About The “White Rapper Show”

mc%20serch.jpgA few weeks ago, we pre-emptively rolled our eyes at Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show, VH1’s upcoming reality-show competition in which MC Serch tries to find the next big-time professional honky. “It’s on VH1,” we thought, “the network staffed by people who are smart enough to know that they shouldn’t spreading so much stupidy.” Well, we just finished watching the pilot episode, and our verdict is after the click-through… MORE »

Interesting that the show's going to be centered so significantly around NYC hip hop culture when the three most visible and/or successful white MCs of the last ten years -- Eminem, Bubba Sparxxx and Paul Wall -- are from Detroit, Atlanta and Houston respectively.

On a lighter note, I wonder if Serch still has that grudge against the Beastie Boys. Thanks to Ego Trip I'll sooner watch this than listen to To the 5 Boroughs, at least.
