‘American Idol’: Naima & Thia Voted Off, Fantasia Performs

Fri Apr 1 2011 by Robbie Daw
Just in case you didn't get the memo from Ryan Seacrest, last night's elimination round of American Idol was to have two contestants voted off. And the episode didn't disappoint—well, unless you were fans of either Naima Adedapo or Thia Megia. One surprise, however, came when the usual group performance was ditched in favor of the Top 11 contestants splitting into duet partners, trios and quartets. Read on! More »

Fantasia To Star In Feature Film Biopic As Gospel Legend

Wed Feb 9 2011 by Becky Bain
Grammy nominee Fantasia Barrino has been cast as American gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson in a feature film of the singer's life. While this isn't the first time Fantasia starred in a biopic, it's the first time she's playing someone other than herself. The film goes into production in April and will reportedly be out in December — just in time for Oscar season! Hey, if Jennifer Hudson can finish seventh place on American Idol and win an Academy Award, surely the champion from that same season's competition can do the same?  [Billboard]

‘American Idol’ To Release A Greatest “Hits” Collection

Thu Feb 3 2011 by Becky Bain
American Idol is celebrating a decade on the air by releasing a greatest hits compilation called American Idol 10th Anniversary — The Hits. The biggest problem (besides there being nary one Jennifer Hudson song) is that the term "hits" is about as appropriate a word to use as "stars" is on Dancing With The Stars. Jump below to find out what songs and artists Fox considers a success. More »

Jennifer Hudson Makes Oprah Cry At The Kennedy Center Honors

Wed Dec 29 2010 by Becky Bain
While other artists were giving it up for music icon Paul McCartney at the 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors, you'd forget that Oprah Winfrey was also being honored in D.C. the same night. (Which marks maybe the first time in history Oprah was upstaged by someone else.) But Forbes' highest-earning celebrity of 2010 was given one amazing tribute by Jennifer Hudson, who came out in a gorgeous dress (and new svelte figure) to sing "I'm Here", from the Oprah-produced Broadway show The Color Purple. Watch J-Hud make Oprah tear up below. More »

Former ‘Idol’ Winners Share Experiences On ‘Welcome Home’ Special

Tue Dec 21 2010 by Becky Bain
Welcome Home, a documentary following the winners of American Idol, popped up over the weekend without much fanfare — and even stranger, the Fox-approved doc isn't drowning in cheesiness (or Coca-Cola and Ford product placement). The half-hour special features interviews with all nine Idol winners, from Kelly Clarkson to Lee DeWyze, as well as their parents, siblings and grade school music teachers. It's an interesting look into the process of auditioning for the competition, surviving it, and managing your career once you've won it. Jump below for the full vid. More »

Charlie Wilson: The Idolator Interview

Thu Dec 9 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
If pop music feels like one big family — and it often does, with its over-emoting and petty rivalries — then it's high time to pay respect to our favorite uncle. Charlie Wilson is a living legend — the former lead singer of 70s funk group The Gap Band, the hustler-approved voice behind hits like Pharrell's "Beautiful" and most recently, as the fiery, soulful singer on several of Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Friday jams. No matter how you came to know him, "Uncle" Charlie (a nickname given by Snoop Dogg) deserves credit for keeping the dance floor filled now more than ever. Good thing he's got a new album, Just Charlie.

Check out our exclusive interview with the timeless artist below and find out about his collaborations with Kanye, his friendship with Fantasia, and why he's not trying to take the pimp out of the game — he's trying to be just Charlie. More »

Breaking Down The 2011 Grammy Nominees

Thu Dec 2 2010 by Becky Bain
We've reviewed the mammoth list of Grammy nominations that were announced yesterday, and came up with a handy list of noteworthy observations about the major shut-outs, the unexpected nods, and the head-scratching eligibility requirements that force songs we were humming a year ago into this year's race. (We love you "Empire State Of Mind", but you are so 2009.) Jump below to take a closer look at the noms, as well as reactions from some of the lucky nominees. Surprisingly, no one snubbed took off on a Twitter rant like The-Dream did last year — at least not yet. More »
