Flo Rida To Get Right Round Al Roker
Confirmed Dead or Alive abuser / alleged rabbit abuser Flo Rida will make his Today debut during this summer’s installment of the morning show’s Summer Concert Series (now entering its 14th year!). “I’m getting goosebumps just even thinking about it,” he said of the appearance. “I always do something real big every time I get on TV, but since this is my first time on Today I definitely have to set the mark very high.” That actually makes him sound kind of humble and sweet. Darn you, Flo Rida, making me like you! In other news, the Dave Matthews Band will make its first appearance with Ann Curry and Co. This is made even more surprising by the fact that All-American Rejects will be making their third appearance. Full lineup after the jump!

Five Ways Flo Rida Can Save His Label Some Money Next Time
Flo Rida is currently dominating the charts with “Right Round,” his (and Dr. Luke’s) re-imagining of Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).” But it’s not just his two-hit wonderdom that makes me think he might be the ultimate pop star for this crazy time. Billboard asked him how he came around to using the Dead or Alive track, and his basic response was that his A&R guy at Atlantic asked him to use the song, so he did. While that’s likely been great news for whatever plastic surgeon Pete Burns sold his songwriting share to for services rendered, I had to wonder why the A&R guy didn’t think of what could be plundered from the Atlantic catalog before providing revenue to Dead or Alive’s then-label Epic. Since I’m in the giving spirit, here are five tracks from the house that Ahmet built that Flo Rida should consider in the near future.

Two-Hit Wonder Flo Rida Owns Charts, Reminds Us He Exists
Obviously, we need to talk about the new song that takes over the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, and the mind-blowing record it sets.
But before we do that, let’s talk about Hilary Swank.
I find Swank’s movie career totally incomprehensible: She either wins Oscars, or she tanks. Not even Meryl Streep has won two Best Actress statues, yet in under a decade Swank has gone to that podium twice, like some kind of modern-day Katharine Hepburn. You’d think that would make her one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, or at least its most respected. Sure, she wins roles in some blockbuster-type stuff (The Core) or prestige-like stuff (The Black Dahlia), but these movies are invariably flops. Swank’s successes seem to have had no impact on her career, or the way she’s regarded by the general public. She’s some kind of metaphor for the in-and-out nature of post-millennial fame.
All this leaps to my mind when I consider Flo Rida, the rapper who reaches No. 1 on the Hot 100 for the second time, with the kind of sales total that you’d think would make Lil Wayne, Kanye West or Jay-Z bow respectfully.
But if I were them, I wouldn’t. Because after all, who is this clown? How did Flo Rida become the Hilary Swank of pop music?

Flo Rida Owns Us All
So, remember last week, when I was musing on the possibility of Flo Rida’s Pete Burns-tastic “Right Round” breaking the debut-week sales record that Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle” had just set? Well, not only did it break Slim Shady’s record, the ode to getting head on the dance floor pulverized it, selling 636,303 copies in its first week at Amazon MP3 and the iTunes Store—the best single-week total ever, beating his own “Low”—and pretty much ensuring that it’s going to be this week’s No. 1 single. (”Crack A Bottle” was off 39%, selling 254,000 copies; the No. 3 song, the T.I./Justin Timberlake collaboration “Dead And Gone,” moved 237,000 units.)

Eminem: Not Quite As Popular As Flo Rida, But Still Setting Records
Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle” sold 418,000 downloads in its first week at digital-music stores, setting a record for first-week download sales and propelling itself to No. 1 on this week’s Hot 100. That total is also third on the all-time list of single-week sales, behind Lady Ga Ga’s “Just Dance” (which moved 419,000 copies for the Jan. 10 chart week) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (which sold 467,000 copies the week of Jan. 12, 2008). Those are nice numbers for the long-absent Slim Shady, sure, but if the current iTunes Store top 10 is a bellwether, his record could be short-lived—thanks to the combined power of Flo Rida, Dr. Luke, oral sex, and Pete Burns.
