the music video was back
As Chris Molanphy mentioned in today's TRL post, the overnight block of videos on MTV seems to have disappeared from the channel's schedule. As part of our endless commitment to using the power of statistics to figure out just what the heck is going on at 1515 Broadway, we looked at MTV's video-airplay statistics to figure out if the channel was completely devoid of music, or if it just seemed that way.

The Pete Wentz project FNMTV promises a world of entertainment this week for those of you who aren't seeing Mission of Burma tonight (grrr). This week's all-over-the-place lineup of videos is rather charming—save the inclusion of the madness called Shwayze.

Reactions to No Age's MTV debut on last Friday's installment of FNMTV are currently running 51/49 against of the Los Angeles duo's paint-and-glitter-drenched backyard bash, with the "anti" faction complaining that they want more singing. Of course, comments like "when he starts to sings he only sings like for 30 seconds and i dont understand what he is sayin this song really suckz" only inspire the "pro" faction to go out of its way to point out its debate partners' bad grammar. Oh, Internet. [MTV]

get ready to loathe no age by the end of next week
Another Friday, another installment of FNMTV starring our pal Pete Wentz. This week, there are mysteriously only three new videos (T.I., No Age, and Day 26) to go with two live performances (Rihanna and Maroon 5 featuring Rihanna). I wondered what effect the program had on the number of videos played on MTV, and there's good and bad news. The good (?) news: MTV is certainly devoting a larger amount of its airtime to music videos. The bad news: I hope you like Boys Like Girls.

It was only a matter of time before marketing departments dredged up old jingles and forced them through a 21st-century DIY makeover from hell. Case in point: McDonald's "Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun" ditty from the '70s, which is now the subject of an official MySpace competition to see who has the most time to waste on recording their own version of the song. Not wanting to leave any demographic behind, McDonald's has also launched a Spanish version of the website, complete with a translated version of the jingle. Unable to resist the lure of singing the Big Mac jingle in Spanish, I took it upon myself to submit an entry to the "Latino" category. My jingle after the jump.

"FNMTV" Reruns Further Proof That You Can Make An Acronym Mean Anything These Days
So right now MTV, in its newfound commitment to playing at least four full-length music videos per week, is running a "remixed" version of the Pete Wentz music-video mission FNMTV, as it did on Monday and Tuesday around this time. This edition is apparently a "reviews"-centric version of the show, where the featured videos take up about 2/3 of the screen and the real focus is the user-generated reactions to each video being aired. (MTV has been desperately begging its users to grab their cameras and talk or dance in response to each clip on its Web site, and it would appear that at least a few people have gobbled up the 15-seconds-of-fame bait. Including Ultragrrrl! An example is below.)

mtv plays music videos, film at 8 et
After a lot of buildup that stretched all the way to an Idolator reader poll, I watched Pete Wentz's effort to bring videos back to MTV, FNMTV Premieres, on DVR-delay Saturday morning. And it was... OK. Friday night's premiere didn't result in ground-breaking TV by any stretch, but it wasn't completely awful despite the musical presence of both will.i.am and the Pussycat Dolls. The biggest complaint I had, really, was that the show was full of filler; Anthony's prediction last week that the hourlong show would air seven videos in toto was actually over the night's tally by three. (A few older videos got a bit of screen time, but most of the music within was papered over by Wentz's explaining the clips and the collective "whooooo"ing of the well-manicured crowd.)
