Franz Ferdinand Have A New Pro-Sex Dance Song For You

I'm not sure how I feel about "Katherine Kiss Me," a new song that Franz Ferdinand performed at Glastonbury this weekend. On the one hand, I'm glad to see the band consolidating its strengths (bouncy numbers with raised eyebrows and lyrical come-ons) rather than unleashing some rock opera that proves its real artists bona fides. But the song doesn't add any new twists to make up for its lack of energy, which is especially striking when compared to the band's best material. It's unfair to judge a new song from a live YouTube clip, but still: Are we seeing diminishing returns or an exciting appetizer? [YouTube]

Franz Ferdinand To Make Glastonbury Feel Love, Cream

Franz Ferdinand, following a series of warm-up gigs, has announced it will play a set at this weekend's Glastonbury Festival late Friday evening. This should be a very pleasant surprise for festivalgoers, as it not only means more hits to sing along to in the mud, it's also a chance to hear the band's new material, which you can sort of hear in the excerpts recently posted on their Web site and which has been receiving pretty rapturous reviews from people who've heard it. The key phrases appear to be "disco" and "techno," with comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Cream(?), and the Killers popping up. Some mouthwatering review highlights below. More »

The "music" section of Franz Ferdinand's Web site has snippets from their current recording sessions, and while I'm hesitant to say that they're definitive signs of the band taking a step in any particular direction, I will say that a few of them sound quite good on the endless loop that they've been engineered to play on. Is this a nakedly obvious ploy for someone to craft a pre-release mixtape? [Franz Ferdinand via Guardian]

So much for Franz Ferdinand making the greatest pop album of all time: "FRANZ FERDINAND's bid to go pop has gone bust after they scrapped pricey sessions with GIRLS ALOUD's producer." There's still hope, because they're now working with the guy who wrote Kylie Minogue's "Slow," but surely I'm not the only one hoping that these sessions "mysteriously" leak out to the Internet? Franz Ferdinand encourages its fans to download its cover of David Bowie's "Sound and Vision," which will appear on that all-covers Radio 1 compilation. It's very admirable that they, too, want to protect the world from the idea of the Klaxons covering "No Diggity." [Torrent Freak]

Leak Of The Day: Franz Ferdinand Does Its Best LCD Soundsystem Impression

The Music Slut has an MP3—possibly ripped from MySpace—of Franz Ferdinand covering LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends." The FF track is slated to appear as an LCD B-side next month, and while LCD's tinkling piano lines make a quick cameo, this version far more Hooky (ha!) than the original: More »

Videodrone: The Kid You Bully Today May Turn Into A Looker Tomorrow

This anti-bullying PSA from the British teen-outreach site need2know corrals some of the UK's pop lights (the Sugababes' Keisha Buchanan, the Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears) in order to make a "today's nerd will likely be tomorrow's superstar" statement. But we can't help but think that this comment, buried deep down in the comments, is slightly more effective than the ad itself: More »
