Hurricanes And OPEC To Bands: Don't Tour

Getting gas in the Atlanta region has gotten difficult after hurricanes affected the production of refineries in Louisiana and Texas. Actually, much of the Southeast is affected, and maybe the governor of Georgia is right in saying the current shortage is nothing more than a "self-inflicted" panic, but I'm not so sure. I know that I searched for plain ol' Regular (this was admittedly a small search) a couple of days ago to no avail before finally finding some elsewhere in the city (Plus and Supreme were out there, albeit at $4/gallon).

It got me thinking about the whole "touring equals profit" bit of Conventional Band Wisdom, and how, more and more, it seems to be something of a lie.

High gas prices bring the pain to Nashville acts big and small: "To illustrate the situation touring artists now face, [booking agent Keith] Case recalls a recent Ralph Stanley swing into Texas. 'It was just a straight run, not a lot of geography,' he explains. 'He went from home [in southwest Virginia], played three dates that were all closely routed in Texas. He came back and his [roundtrip] fuel bill was almost $2,000.'" [CMT]

How Are Gas Prices Affecting Your Musical Habits This Summer?

Yesterday, the Associated Press released a poll saying that 9 out of 10 Americans were hit hard by gas prices, with people giving up on luxuries like eating out and fancy soaps and pizza places raising their prices in order to compensate for higher delivery costs. While living in public-transportation-heavy New York (and not having a license) (I know, I know) makes the pain of higher gas prices a little less of a direct burden for me, I have noticed other ways that the musical economy at large might be affected.
