Who Covered Amy Winehouse Best? A Tribute

Sat Jul 23 2011 by Idolator Staff
While the world struggles to come to terms with the death of Amy Winehouse and her long and very public battle with drug and alcohol addiction - we thought it would be comforting to focus on something positive. Namely her incredible musical legacy. The five-time Grammy winner perfected bittersweet soul music but her influence extended all genres - including pop. We've pulled together a selection Amy Winehouse cover versions from six very different acts. They vary in quality but prove that songs like "Back To Black" and "Rehab" touched people from all walks of life and will be reinterpreted for decades to come. Check them out below. More »

Tue May 31 2011 by Idolator Staff
Did You Hear?

:: Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts interviewed Lady Gaga for MTV UK, and received a polite thank you for letting Mother Monster borrow a pair of pantyhose in an emergency. Wonder if Nicola also packs backup metal headdresses. [DirectLyrics]

:: "Jars Of Hearts" singer Christina Perri — largely unknown a year ago — is set for her first headlining tour. Better practice those "Tragedy" lyrics so you can sing along. [PopCrush]

:: Tinie Tempah reveals his U.S. and U.K. hip-hop inspirations. Lil Wayne, he says, is "working harder than any living musician." Yup, Weezy's all work, no play. [MTV Buzzworthy]

The Judges Of U.S. ‘X Factor’: Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole & Nicole Scherzinger?

Wed Sep 22 2010 by Robbie Daw
While the big news today was that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler were officially announced as the new judges on the upcoming 10th season of American Idol (gosh, we're so shocked—no, really), a report has surfaced on the site of Sacramento's Fox affiliate station stating that Simon Cowell will be joined by fellow UK X Factor judge Cheryl Cole when the program launches in the U.S. next year. Cheryl Cole Opens Up Her “Parachute” With ‘DWTS’ Pro Derek Hough

Mon Feb 1 2010 by Robbie Daw
Girls Aloud singer and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole can finally put her internal conflict over the will.i.am co-produced song "Parachute" to rest. Last October in a video blog Cole stated that the track, which appears on her UK solo album 3 Words, caused her to have "massive fights with myself," since she initially wanted it to be the lead single off the LP. In the end she opted for "Fight For This Love."

But it all worked out pretty decent. "Parachute" is now scheduled to be the third single, and Cheryl snagged Dancing With The Stars heartthrob Derek Hough to cut a rug with her in the music video. You can catch the full clip below—and hopefully Cheryl can finally get some sleep at night. More »

Cheryl Cole’s ‘3 Words’ Is Perfect Sleepy Holiday Muzak

Fri Nov 27 2009 by Robbie Daw

Girls Aloud minx/X Factor judge Cheryl Cole debuted the music video for “3 Words” today, the second single off her same-titled U.K. solo album. Quite frankly, Cheryl and guest warbler will.i.am aren’t breaking any new visual ground here, nor is the song as catchy as Cole’s previous offering, “Fight For This Love.”

That said, quiet dance jam “3 Words” does manage to nicely soundtrack a day of stuffing yourself with cold leftovers and vegging out on the couch. So hop below the jump and give “3 Words” a spin or two. (And don’t forget the gravy.) More »

The Pop Economy: The Troubles With Girl Groups

Fri Oct 23 2009 by admin

Behind the Sugababes’ latest lineup machinations, which make one wonder if the group is shape-shifting into a sort of female British Menudo, is a trend piece about enough slant histrionics to make Ken Russell films wilt. There’s even something telling in the yearlong break rival girl group Girls Aloud announced in July, following on the heels of some of their strongest offerings yet. If the crown jewels in Britain’s pop tiara are wont to defect so quickly—and leave us with The Saturdays—shouldn’t it be time to reassess the girl group as a business model? Perhaps, with pop going the way of our economy, we probably shouldn’t be turning to something as volatile as singer-stuffed girl groups for a bailout.

Boybands and even male-fronted rock bands seem to enjoy some sense of longevity. But why do their female counterparts seem to have all the reliability of AIG? After the jump, a categorical look at five iconic girlb(r)ands for whom dissolution was all but foretold. More »

Britain Is Awash In Music Prizes Tonight

Tue Sep 8 2009 by Maura

UK MC Speech Debelle’s Speech Therapy was named the winner of the 2009 Mercury Prize this evening; Debelle’s debut album bested offerings from fellow UK citizens like Bat For Lashes, La Roux, and Florence and the Machine, among others. Meanwhile, the singles-centric Popjustice Twenty Quid Music Prize, which also had quite the competitive field, was nabbed by Girls Aloud’s sterling “The Promise,” because come on, it’s amazing, how could it not?? (Full disclosure: I voted for it.) Clips from the winners after the jump! More »

The “NME” Looks To Pop (And Crabcore) For Its Future

Wed Aug 5 2009 by Maura

Apoplectic British music magazine NME has just issued its latest Future 50 list—”the 50 acts pushing things forward in 2009,” in the rag’s sorta-esteemed opinion—and one thing that’s sort of surprising to me is how pop-centric the overall list is. Sure, the top two slots are taken by Pitchfork darlings (a one-two punch of Animal Collective and The Knife), but the list also includes Lady GaGa, frequent Girls Aloud collaborators Xenomania, and the Idolator-beloved site Popjustice? Also the kids’ program Yo Gabba Gabba!, and… The Take That stage show?? Also, perhaps to goose newsstand sales by putting a little bit of the fear of God into anyone browsing the list online, the hyper-annoying, hypersexist, Hypercolored outfit 3OH!3 is at No. 41. The full list after the jump. More »

Popjustice Continues “Be Proud Of British Music Day” With Its Own Shortlist Of Perfect Pop

Tue Jul 21 2009 by Maura

Now that the British music establishment has declared its favorite home-grown albums of the year with the Mercury Prize nominations, the cheeky British pop site Popjustice has seen fit to announce its shortlist for The Popjustice Twenty Quid Music Prize, which honors the best British single of the year. The artist behind the winning song gets twenty pounds, and the voting is decided by you! (And me, and anyone else.) So all you commenters who want to avenge Lily Allen’s being left off the Mercury Prize list can. Other nominees include the Pet Shop Boys’ “Love Etc” and Saint Etienne’s “Method Of Modern Love”; I’m probably going to throw my weight behind Girls Aloud’s “The Promise,” what with it being completely overplayed (yet not played enough) by my assortment of digital-music players in recent months. All the nominees, after the jump! More »

Everybody Calm Down: Girls Aloud Promise That They Are Not Splitting Up

Thu Jul 16 2009 by Maura

TV-borne British girl group Girls Aloud has been the source of split rumors by the overheated press in their homeland this week, thanks to one member arriving in the States to work on a solo album with will.i.am and another telling a UK magazine that she now considered herself “an actress with a girlband on the side.” What could all this outside activity mean? Well, according to a post that the Girls made on their Web site yesterday, it doesn’t mean that they’re breaking up—in fact, it just means that they’re recharging their batteries. (Whew!) More »
