The Morning Mix: Jay-Z Responds To MC Hammer’s Video Diss

Thu Nov 4 2010 by Becky Bain
Did You Hear?

:: "I didn't know that wasn't on the table for discussion!" laughed Jay, responding to Hammer's hurt feelings (and ridiculous video retort) when Jay rapped about Hammer's money woes. "I didn't know I was the first person to say that. Am I?" He adds that he wrote some great things about Hammer in his upcoming book, Decoded. Bygones, guys? [World Star Hip-Hop]

:: Rapper Gucci Mane was arrested for driving on the wrong side of the road, but that's not all — he was also charged with "running a red light or stop sign, damage to government property, obstruction, no license, no proof of insurance and other traffic charges." [MySpace Music]

:: Is Jay-Z considering running for President one day? If he does run and gets elected, he'll have to make sure to day something disparaging about Kanye, since that seems to be the precedent. [Spinner]

:: New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys (now calling themselves NKOTBSB) are co-headlining a tour together, and the boy bands' first stop will be performing at the American Music Awards together. This will either turn out to be incredible, or it will be the perfect opportunity for a bathroom break during the telecast. [MTV Buzzworthy]

:: Bret Michaels and Trish Cyrus say they have a "working relationship" and that's all, so you can stop your rumor-mongering about an alleged affair right now. [E! Online]

Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj And Pharrell’s “Haterade” Tastes Good

Mon Sep 20 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
"My First Kiss" remixer, Gucci Mane has collaborated with Complex cover girl Nicki Minaj and Pharrell on "Haterade", a new track that's nearly impossible to hate on. The song is fresh from Gucci's upcoming album The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted due out September 28th. The song is smooth and mellow—like sitting on the porch, sippin' lemonade and watching the sun set. Jump below to sample the latest Neptunes production and tell us if you like the flavor. More »

Lil Wayne’s “We Be Steady Mobbin’”: Another Week, Another Music Video

Tue Jul 6 2010 by Robbie Daw
Don't think that a minor factor like Gucci Mane being released from prison a mere week before Lil Wayne himself was hauled off to the pokey was going to stop the pair from collaborating on DJ Scoob Doo's video for "We Be Steady Mobbin'." After all, we're fully aware that Weez shot nine vids over one weekend before his jail stint began—something that's apparent from the on-a-budget nature of this clip, wherein Weezy struts around his home and taps his cigarette ash into one of his Grammys. Classy! (Warning: this jam is NSFW.) More »

Listen To 3OH!3’s “My First Kiss” Remix With Ke$ha And Gucci Mane

Thu Jun 24 2010 by Becky Bain
Gucci Mane is apparently the remix king nowadays, lending his vocals to such remix tracks as Travie McCoy's "Billionaire", Mariah Carey's "H.A.T.E. U.", and now 3OH!3's pop-tastic ode to first time french-kissing, "My First Kiss." Is this remixed track hot and steamy, or like most first kisses—a disappointment? Listen below! More »

Travie McCoy To Join Ke$ha And Rihanna On Tour

Mon Jun 14 2010 by Becky Bain
When Nicki Minaj pulled out of Rihanna and Ke$ha's Last Girl On Earth tour, we imagined they would fill up that slot with another rockin' female, but we're not going to complain about Travie McCoy (who just finished touring with Cobra Starship and 3OH!3) continuing to promote his solo material to a mass audience. Travie will open for both ladies on their summer tour, and not only will the hip-hop singer be the one person with a Y chromosome performing on this tour, he'll probably be the only one wearing pants.

After the jump, listen to the remix of Travie's ode to wish-fulfillment "Billionaire", which features T-Pain and Gucci Mane alongside Bruno Mars, as well as his latest literally insane video for Lazarus track "The Manual." More »

Mariah Carey Says “Boo”

Fri Oct 9 2009 by Maura

Never let it be said that Mariah Carey isn’t afraid to make the grand gestures in order to assert her chart supremacy: She’s already released a Jermaine Dupri-produced remix of her third single from the sales disappointment Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, “H.A.T.E. U,” that completely reconfigures the track around a bite of the Ghost Town DJs’ 1996 classic “My Boo.” It also features verses by Gucci Mane, Big Boi, and OJ Da Juiceman. Can you say “Hail Mary pass”? I guess since biting from the ’80s didn’t work out all that well, she decided to move her nostalgia up by a few years, and ride the coattails of a song that’s pretty much unassailable. Oh Mariah. Clip after the jump. More »

Mariah Carey Asks Gucci Mane To Give “Obsessed” Some CPR

Fri Jul 24 2009 by Maura

Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” is already floundering in its second week on the Hot 100, dipping to No. 20 this week after debuting at a not-great-for-her No. 11 seven days ago. Which is why I guess the Gucci Mane remix and a new cut of the track’s Brett Ratner-directed video have been rush-released. The new clip ditches much of the “Mariah as a man stalking Mariah as a pop star” plot in favor of Mimi reclining awkwardly on a table and lip-syncing; Gucci Mane was apparently just told to stand around and contribute the ability to wave a champagne bottle around, a kinda-awful verse, and a lot of “hooo”-ing while Mariah is trying to sing. I didn’t so much mind “Obsessed” in its original form, but this remix was making me check the “time elapsed” counter on the embedded video from about the :53 point on. Clip after the jump. More »

Trey Songz’ “LOL :)”: Hear It Now Before You Hear It Everywhere

Fri Jul 10 2009 by Maura

Also on the new Tapemasters Inc. mix: “LOL :)” (pronounced “el oh el, smiley-face”), an ode to the lurid trend of “sexting” by Trey Songz with assists from Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane. Oh, readers, you are going to hear this song, which I believe is the lead single from Songz’ forthcoming album Ready, everywhere this summer. It has a delicate beat that I guess is supposed to remind one of computer alert sounds; it name-drops Twitpic; and Soulja Boy’s verse features a line where he rhymes “Blackberry” and “Halle Berry.” (He also name-checks his recent hit “Kiss Me Thru The Phone,” which is a further testament to his ability to self-market.) The track after the jump. More »
