Idolator’s American Idolatry: Seven Battles For Nine Slots

sanjayaaaaaside.jpgWelcome to Idolator’s American Idolatry, our look at the parade of starmaking that is American Idol. In honor of Sanjaya’s seven ponytails and the high artist overlap between the singers (Gwen Stefani, apparently, only listened to the Police and Donna Summer growing up), we’ve tweaked our normal format a bit. After the click-through, our look at the seven biggest showdowns from last night. MORE »

Was that the regular band last night,(4/17/07), or did Idol producers go to the local country watering hole the night before the show and recruit musicians? If the judges had truely been judging they would have "panned the band", especially the "fiddle" player. Shouldn't the musicians at least be in tune with each other, even if the singers aren't. Part, granted may be only a small part, of Chris' woes last night, was the violin was terribly out of tune, I thought.

Is Sanjaya’s Singing Making Gwen Stefani B-A-N-A-N-A-S?

idolgwen.jpgTonight’s American Idol will have Gwen Stefani serving as coach/inspiration for the remaining 10 hopefuls. But a thread on I Love Everything found a rumor from the Idol boards claiming that Sanjaya Malakar’s desire to sing a No Doubt song almost sent the whole thing off the rails:

“Sanjaya Malakar - He wanted to sing “Spoiler”. She tried to get him to sing some 80’s song. He said he was a big fan and he really wanted to do one of her songs. Gwen was upfront with him and told him she didn’t think he could pull it off but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Today after seeing how rehearsals were going, she didnt’ see any progress. She went to Nigel immediately and told him she does not want Sanjaya singing one of her songs whatsoever. Sanjaya didn’t have many options at that point. He kind of got stuck with “Spoiler”. This caused a big scene at the studio and was the talk all afternoon.”

In case you were racking your brain about which No Doubt B-side “Spoiler” might be, don’t–the Idol boards don’t post forthcoming song titles. But if you want to find out just how, exactly, Gwen’s going to be tortured this evening, after the jump, we have what reality rant claims is a partial list of songs for tonight. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t click. MORE »

I have to say ... I've kinda hated Gina so far, but that was surprisingly listenable.

James Cameron Adds An Extra Dimension Of Incomprehensibility To “Wind It Up” Video

An article from today’s New York Times looks at music videos’ experimentation with 3-D:

A little past the two-minute mark, the music video for Gwen Stefani’s recent single, “Wind It Up,” finds her chained to a fence while a flurry of bubbles and snowflakes float by. Viewed from a certain perspective — that is, through 3-D glasses — it is a dreamlike moment in which the flurry seems close enough to touch.

Okay, I went to a funeral this afternoon, had a headache and just woke up from a 2-hr nap, so I thought this had something to do with the Jesus crypt thing and James Cameron...somehow, JesusBox reflected his having a stake in Wind-Up records. I still sorta do?

And in my dream, Camille from Grass Records (as was) was talking all sped-up or helium-ish, like Camille, the Prince character.

Then Tony M. came in , rapping up a STORM! Or a typhoon.

Videodrone: Gwen Stefani Is Trapped Inside A Prison Lined With Money

Spandexed jailhouse fashions. Gold-plated barbells and buildings. A convenience store and a police department that share Gwen Stefani’s “double-g, but not Gucci” branding. A song that sounds like it was shelved in 1991 after being written for Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat. MORE »

Gwen should really let her domestic servants use the elevator.

Idolator Record-Review Review: Gwen Stefani’s Critical Heyday Is Winding Down

- “Her music is polarized to match the lyrics: either sparsely rhythmic tracks where she chants as much as she sings, or pop songs that aim for choruses as catchy as Madonna’s 1980’s chart busters. MORE »

Yeah, but would you want to hear her belt out "I'm Just a Girl" at 37? That would be worse.

Fergielicious? Amazing to me that Fergie's worthy of any adjective, dumbfounding that it would end in "-licious." In any case, this song is working its Peaches-licious pedigree like a fatherfucker, no? And Pharrel, well, he's sounding comfortably Pharrel-licious--numbingly so? Anyone else feel like this could be the final season of wickedly stripped-down beats, beat-boxy hooks and buzzing?

Gwen tho? Sure, she's fluff and is getting a little out-there with the "look at this new style I bought up and then WAY overdid!" thing but it's hard to be TOO mad at old ska kids--after all, she stuck with her two-tone tomboy look way past when she could've skipped out and--well, copped free couture and started prancing all over fashion mags like she does now.

Well, actually, maybe it's not so hard to get mad at old ska kids: http://www.filmforum.org/archivedfilms/quad/quadsting.jpg<...

Reminder: Gwen Stefani Will Probably Not Be Hanging Out With Us For Too Long

If we’ve learned anything in the last few weeks, it’s that certain labels don’t like having their songs online. So, before the day is through, make sure you check out “Wind It Up” before it winds down. MORE »

.....Well, maybe that sampled bass line is original. Yeah, the one that sounds like a loopy Dr. Who episode filler that has nothing to do with the "song." Is that Gwen yodeling? My "sampled" and "not sampled" detector is not sure, right now. At best, I'd guess they sped Julie Andrews up at bit to keep up with the beat, then pitch-shifted it down. There are a few digital-ie artifacts that seem to suggest this.

.....Sound of Music sounds very wrong and strange; all stereo-ized with the pops and skips gone, anyway!
